I shadowed the Assisted Living Manager, Coley Rainbolt. As the assisted living manager, Coley has to complete monthly, quarterly, 6-month, and annual assessments for the assisted living residents on time. She has to schedule and lead care conferences in relation to residents’ needs and family expectations. She updates care plans and arranges all the resident care needs into task specific assignments for care associates. Along with all the residents she provides for, she also manages all assisted living care associates which consists of completing interim and annual evaluations timely and addressing performance concerns.

Hi Jacque, I just wanted to respond to your question in regards to the facility that I am currently in. The nurse role is different in this setting because it appears that she has the majority of the responsibility because most of the staff work under her license, she is responsible for all of the education and delegation of tasks to staff such as insulin, medication administration, blood glucose checks, ect.. This is different from the hospital setting because she is responsible for not only the residents nursing care and coordination of care between outside facilities but also education and delegation to staff as well. Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers,nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others,however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse,another example is abuse by strangers,when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes,they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.

Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities Assisted living facilities are one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. Unfortunately, assisted living facilities have a history of being problematic. Specific cases from the movie Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities indicates that assisted living facilities are often under staffed, poorly trained, and often admit elderly patients who are not qualified candidates for their facilities (Byker and Thompson, 2013). When taking this in to account, it is important to consider why families may admit their loved ones in to assisted living facilities.

Caregivers: Must take required training classes, provide a private room, closet, dresser, nightstand, and reading light. A home must meet all safety standards required by the city and Medicaid, attend to patients personal hygiene assisted or unassisted care, and provide three healthy meals and one snack. Document all accidents, hygiene regimens, and medication intake. There must be a land line in the home accessible to the patients, see the patients going to doctor appointments, and therapy. Caregivers must provide activities, conducive to the patient in or out of the home twice a week (patient can opt out) must be documented.

It is very important in your job role as health care assistant to know all the information about the individual take for example they wont know there children as adults they would only know them as children and even though there husband has died they still will think they are alive. (2008) Preliminary report of a palliative care and case management project in an emergency department for chronically ill elderly patients. Journal of Urban Health, 85 (3), 443-51. Montefiore Medical Center created a program in their Emergency Department that identified chronically ill, elderly patients. They found that these patients were more likely to need palliative or home care, and later on hospice care. This preliminary report and case management pilot project made connecting patients to such services and ultimately allowing patients far more accessible options to these types of care.

Every decade our population gets older and a whole new generation of seniors comes along with a new set of attitudes and expectations as to what they want from an assisted living facility. And now that people are living longer, there is a much greater need for these facilities. They can provide a refuge to many family members that may become severely burdened by the arduous task of taking care of a loved one who can no longer take care of themselves. When simple tasks such as bathing and feeding become near impossible to manage alone, not to mention driving to the store and shopping, decisions about placement into a home become paramount. Most important to the family members is the ability of the facility to provide the adequate care that is needed for their loved ones.

Later in life, losing their independence become inescapable. A family member or a spouse will now take the wheel. While there can be a group with a lack of Instrumental of Activities of Daily Living and others with only the Activities of Daily Living, they are all in need of caregivers. When taking care by family caregivers, the elderly tend to have a higher life expectancy rather than the people in a nursing home. Some people only presume the negative outcome about family caregivers; however, they do not see the effect of socioeconomic on family caregivers.

Often, sick and elderly people realize that their disability limits liveliness in their everyday lives, making living alone too challenging. They desire to change their conditions and stay in the warmth of home, yet, favor not to become a burden to their family. This is something that takes place to many of us at some point. It can be overwhelming to have a member of the family who needs constant care. Plenty of us simply doesn 't have enough time or the facilities to be available all the time, although we may want to.
