Page 1: The United States was growing and needed more landIn 1803, the United States purchased a large area of French land through the Louisiana Purchase. There had been rapid growth in the United States. Through the Northwest Territory, people had been expanding westward to plant crops and raise livestock beyond the Appalachian Mountains. People needed more land to expand as these lands became more popular, so the west was the obvious choice. Land ownership, especially the ownership of small farms, was the best way to ensure the survival of a republic by ensuring independence and virtue among its citizens.

The deal was needed for both people. New Orleans was a settlement that Thomas Jefferson wanted to purchase from the French. Because of its location along the Mississippi River, it was a major seaport for American businesses. Robert Livingston was sent by him as the French Emperor's Minister to France in order to get the land for him. At first Napoleon didn’t want to sell the land to Thomas Jefferson. He had hoped to create a massive empire. He had wanted it to be for the Americans too. Thoughts Soon Napoleon began to have struggles about money

A stretch of land stretching east to west from the Mississippi river to the rocky mountains was known as the Louisiana purchase. The Gulf of Mexico and New Orlans were its southernmost points. Section 1- Political Developments A) The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 doubled the territory of the United States. The land was acquired from France in a deal between Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon. Jefferson gave them a mandate to negotiate up to $10 million for purchase of New Orleans and all or part of the Floridas.
Two explorers, Lewis and Clark went on an expedition to explore the land with a big crew. This purchase expanded the country and made it grow physically. Document B states, “The First Consul of the French Republic desiring to give to the United States a strong proof of his friendship doth hereby cede to the United States in the name of the French Republic for ever and
The purchasing of the Louisiana Territory promoted Jefferson’s vision for the country because his plans for this nation depended on western expansion as well as access to the international markets for American farmer products. His vision was threatened when France gained control of Louisiana. Napoleon threatened to block American access to the New Orleans port. Napoleon, for a number of reasons, most to do with money, offered the Louisiana territory to the US for a minimal amount. The US now owning the Louisiana territory more than doubled its size overall.
This was not Thomas Jefferson’s intention by any means when he went into it. One of Jefferson’s top priorities was to Have control over the port of New Orleans, located at the busy location at the mouth of the Mississippi river. This port was very important to the economy and trade of the United States. HIs first offer for the port (2 million dollars) was turned down. So he went
Napoleon fails to take back control of Santo Domingo, and as a result he no longer requires any of the land in Louisiana. On a whim, he sells the entire territory to America for $15,000,000. Napoleon withdrew French influence in the Americas to fight the war in Europe, and the British also had minimal political influence in the Americas. Spain lost most of it’s colonial power in the Americas, and was irritated at the purchase, because of the large amount of power it gave the United States.

The Louisiana Purchase has more than doubled our available land. This means we can spread into the land when we get too crowded at our towns. This also means that the available supplies would increase as we can get medicines and other stuff from over on the purchased land. The land might have more than we
My opinion on this purchase the plan for Jefferson was to try to stop the war that was happening with the French but it didn’t quite stop it that when the war of 1812 had all stated up again but it was not only to stop the war it was to stop slavery at that time which was a smart idea nobody needs to go through that kind of pain. So it his idea didn’t work as the way he want it to be. It was a good idea for him to purchase the land from the French but for him to not know what was out there when he bought it must have been frustrating for him to do. The turning point was when Lewis and Clark returned with all their information, prompting the start of Manifest Destiny and America’s movement west. The people that was involve in this purchase was Tomas Jefferson, Napoleon B, and Lewis and Clark.
The amount of acres that was bought was unbelievable because it doubled the size of America. The Louisiana purchase was 828,000 square miles. The land we bought was previously owned by France. This is still considered one of the biggest achievements in history.
At that time France was very powerful and owned a lot of land in North America. More importantly, they owned the New Orleans port which was along the Mississippi River. This port was important for navigation and trade. By purchasing this land from France, Napoleon’s army had no place to go to invade the United States. This deal changed America’s future and added power to the presidency.
Also, The purchase was nearly canceled by Congress and only passed by a vote of 59-57. And, Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy the settlement of New Orleans from the French. It was a major seaport
The Louisiana Purchase The Louisiana purchase was one of the biggest land purchases in history. In 1803, the United States paid around $15 million dollars for around 800,000 square miles of land. The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France in 1803. The U.S. paid fifty million dollars and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million dollars which averages to less than three cents per acre. The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, portions of Minnesota, large portions of North Dakota; large portions of South Dakota, parts of New Mexico, the northern portion of Texas, the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Louisiana Purchase was smart move by the United States.
Jefferson’s dilemma in the Louisiana Purchase In April of 1803 Thomas Jefferson was faced with many moral dilemmas in the process of buying the Louisiana territory. Though the price for the territory was beyond generous, Jefferson felt that by purchasing the territory he would be going against his beliefs that the constitution should be followed word for word. The constitution said nothing of the president having the power to purchase land from another government, or to use money of the states for the same purpose (“the moral dilemma”). Another problem was once the land was purchased, there was a fear that it could have been a waste since they had no way to know the layout of the land, and what it would be useful for.
