In 1848, California became part of the United States. A Treaty was set into place at that time to allow the native people to become U.S. citizens. However, because the government failed to live up to the agreed terms of the Guadeloupe Hidalgo Treaty, which was signed as a peace agreement to end the war between the United States and Mexico, the native people suffered horrendously during the next several decades. The confrontation between the Anglo’s and the Indians in California was horrific and brutal to say the least.

Manifest Destiny is the belief or doctrine about the US expansion. It is the assumption that white Americans were “special people” and this came back from the beliefs of the puritans. This doctrine influenced the the settlement of the west because it let white Americans believe that they could control the natives. This doctrine influenced the settlement to the west because it made the migration more likely. Americans attitude towards this was that they thought they deserved all the land.

These ideas combined with the ever present belief in American exceptionalism gave rise to the concept of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the driving force behind the rapid westward expansion of the United States in the nineteenth century as it was the expression of the belief that there was a “God-given” right to to spread across the continent. This concern stemmed from the Spanish missions throughout Alta California which consisted of a series of 21 religious and military outposts, established to spread Christianity among the local Native Americans. They were white Americans, slaves from the south, Chinese, and the Mexicans and Indians that were already on the land. The white Americans were looking for gold. Slaves from the south were looking for freedom.

In other words, many religious settlers believed that it was a call from God for the United States to expand west. Manifest Destiny was basically the belief of expansion by settlers expanding all over America because god supposedly destined the Americans for expansions by their resources. This resulted for the Americans to find a modern mode of transportation that would make traveling from the east to the west coast easier. This resulted in a mega construction known as the Transcontinental Railroad. The railroad not only helps with transportation but with trading.
