Throughout the sixteen and seventeen hundreds Spain had a difficult time getting Spanish settlers to move to Texas. Native Americans who were already settled in Texas were attacking settlers and running them out. After treaties were signed and deals were made with the Native Americans Spanish settlers known as Tejanos slowly began to call Texas home. In 1821 Mexico had gained its Independence from Spain and now controlled Texas. Fearing of attacks from Native Americans they decided to open up Texas to all immigrants.

Throughout various articles, facts have lead to the belief that the Mexicans were responsible for starting the Mexican War. The dilemmas began to appear when Mexico failed to recognize Texas as an independent state. The president of Mexico at the time, Antonio de Santa Anna, signed an agreement in Texas for their freedom but neglected it as soon he came back to Mexico. Afterward, The United States annexed Texas and Mexico cut off all relations with the U.S. The communication between them was completely dissolved and Mexico refused to negotiate with any American.

The Americans were more at fault for the start of the Mexican War. The Americans wanted to take land that was very valuable to Mexico. The land of Texas was very important to the Mexicans because that was where they lived. It wasn’t so forgotten plot of land that they owned, the Mexicans actually resided there. “At that time, only about 75,000 Mexican citizens lived north of the Rio Grande.”

Many people believed that Mexico invaded the United States and caused the U.S Mexico war; however, it was actually United States who raided Mexico first. Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself wasn’t legitimate because of the revolution in Texas, motivation for superiority, and the U.S. government’s actions. To begin, the Texans began an unreasonable war because they didn’t follow Mexico’s laws and conditions. When Mexico started selling cheap land, they set conditions for the people moving in. The people had to convert to Catholicism, learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, and have no slaves. Many Americans didn’t like being told what to do, and disobeyed the rules and laws.
