Mindful Eating is Something We Should All be Practicing at Meal Times
I was first introduced to the concept of mindfulness at a work conference. Crammed into a room with about 100 other coworkers, two researchers gave a thirty minute presentation about how mindfulness and the practice of meditation can refine attention and decrease feelings of stress and anxiety. Less stress and anxiety? Sign me up. A quick google search later and I found the researchers’ website. One event they were offering peaked my interest; a group session specifically about mindful eating. I decided to go. The first group session I met a number of people that were transforming their relationship with food just by using simple mindful eating techniques. This shows the impact on how important it is to make a priority in eating and making well balanced meals. Being able to see the history in how eating habits have changed generation to generation gives an insight on what we need to change. Many people such as Mark never ate a fresh vegetable until 19 years old. This shows that there is a big gap in eating balanced and healthy meals because of the mass production of frozen and canned foods. Mark Stated that, “it cut down on the variety of food we ate” (Mark Bittman 2007 Ted Talk, transcript 10:17).
In the book The Omnivores Dilemma, by Michael Pollan he brings us on his journey with him through analyzing the model of “four meals” and how our thinking habits have changed the way we choose to eat and go about eating throughout the years and the role our society and the different expectations put on individuals has effected their thoughts and relationship to food. Each section and chapter of the book is broken up into different fads, opinions and findings that Pollan has found along his journey. Throughout the book his pre determined notions and thoughts around our society with food is challenged but also is backed up by different healthful and food activists like himself and how like minded people can differer in opinions and thoughts on how our society has changed involving

A Global Problem through Rhetorical Eyes David Zinczenko, a nutrion and wellness editor of ABC news, portrayed a global problem to the public in a way that he could persuade them into agreeing with him that obesity is a problem that concerns all of humanity. He stated that obesity should not only concern the person suffering from it and the parents but all of humanity since it could happen to everyone. In fact, David Zinczenko himself suffered from obesity at an early age. Thankfully, he was able to turn his life around and use his situation in a way that he could help others not suffer what he did. America’s Obesity Crisis When one thinks of an epidemic what usually comes to mind? Aids? Maybe even Ebola? Obesity should come to mind because it causes a range of diseases, affects every age group, cost Americans billions of dollars and is very deadly. It’s a frightening reality that millions of Americans deal with every day.
Obesity is a prevalent issue within the United States. “According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) (2009-2010), approximately 69% of adults are overweight or obese, with more than 78 million adult Americans considered obese”. Today’s society is inundated with a firestorm of information regarding the types of foods that are healthy and will decrease obesity. The most prominent voices in today’s food culture, primarily the wholesome-food movement, believe eating unprocessed food is the only way to live long, healthy lives free of obesity. However, journalist David H. Freedman argues that individuals should not fall prey to these false misconceptions.
Mindful Snacking We mentioned above how stress can fuel poor eating choices, but mindful snacking is a great way to beat that. Choose something that will satiate you, like nuts, a boiled egg, or even half of an avocado. Don’t eat your snack at your desk, sit in a quiet spot to enjoy it and focus on what you’re eating.

The idea taken from Michael Pollan’s quote is that he believes the definition of healthy eating has more to do with how it is “driven by a well-funded corporate machine” (Maxfield, 442). Being Healthy Most Americans obsess over what they eat and how much of it they consume. Americans are also notorious for trying whatever new diet is popular at the moment. This is an example that accounts towards the weird relationship most Americans have with food. Mary Maxfield might frown upon American’s unhealthy relationship with food on people like Michael Pollan, who makes outrageous claims without any scientific proof. In recent years the topic of dieting has been extremely controversial. It is clear that diets do cause people to lose weight, but what are the effects after the diet is over? The daily argument over this topic is if dieting helps or if it is actually more damaging to those who engage in them. Despite the fact that diets help those overweight lose weight; dieting harms the body and causes weight gain in the long run. This is because dieting alters the body not knowing when to feel full leading to overeating as well as causing biological and physical damage.
Dietary Wisdom Reflection Paper During the past weeks, in health class, we have been learning about diet and what makes a diet a healthy diet where there is no danger of you getting some sort of sickness or health problem. In the process we had decided that what made a plate healthy was balance. You had to have a balance between macronutrients and micronutrients with what you ate and so we learned about the healthy eating plate. This plate gave us an idea of what a meal of the day should look like.
