As a wrestler, one may expect to be pressured to lose weight in order to move down a weight class and wrestle more ideal competition. However, it is unfortunate that the practice of losing weight by not eating, restricting fluid intake, and over-exercising reduces the enjoyment of the sport. As a first myth, wrestlers should or must end up cutting weight for the upcoming season. There is no evidence supporting this claim. Not all wrestlers end up cutting weight, and many wrestlers even end up gaining weight for the upcoming season. Either way, there is no link between exceptional improvement in a wrestler’s skills or their win-loss record. Another myth is to be a good wrestler you must cut weight. This is inherently not true, because, for example, wrestlers like Kyle Dake of Cornell University have shown that even moving up an entire weight class each wrestling season will not hinder you from winning a national championship each year of eligibility. In the end, no facts support this myth and most wrestlers will agree on its fictitiousness. Additionally, losing excessive weight is a specific practice and expectation to wrestlers. At the end of practice, I check my weight again and I am still over by about three pounds. When I get home, I go up to my room and start putting multiple layers of clothes on. I put on three shirts, two pairs of shorts, a pair of pants, a sweatshirt and two pairs of socks. After I put on all of my layers, I go down to the basement and run on the treadmill so that I can sweat and lose weight. Once I have run on the treadmill, I go upstairs to check how much I weigh.
Being a part of the Wrestling team these past 4 years has taught me more discipline imaginable. The discipline that wrestling taught me is when a coach or an elder asks you to do something, you do it. Cutting weight will teach one discipline real quick. Throughout my wrestling career I had to cut weight every year, which is by no means an easy thing to do. The discipline it takes is outstanding to me that I am actually able to do it.

As I sit here after the end of my last wrestling season, I write this essay mostly for myself, reflecting on where my life has gone. Avon Athletics, in specific wrestling, has been there every step of the way. In packets put together by the wrestling head coach, I read about how great the sport of wrestling is from the perspective of a state qualifier. I want to share a different perspective. I want to share the perspective from a wrestler who has lost the passion for the sport he once loved; but also a wrestler who will never regret a single moment of time spent on the mat.
I have had many experiences where I feel like I want to give up and just drink water right before a meet but I push through so that I can wrestle. Other times I was already at the limit but needed to lose more weight so I had to run for over 45 minutes before the meet. These all were horrible at the time, but now that I look back
