2.1.3 Mixed Methodology
Scaled survey items and reflective journals were the two interpretive and participatory sources utilized to provide contextual understanding of the impact of service learning for this study. These data sources were analyzed in both qualitative and quantitative fashion, resulting in a mixed methodology.
Triangulation is employed as a means of veri¬fication in order to increase the credibility and de¬pendability of the results. In this study, the use of both quantitative and qualitative data sources allows for triangulation of results by different methods of measurement and between different sources of data. Table 2 outlines methods of measurement used for each research question under study.

This study demonstrates a way of organizing the data, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to aid in forming conclusions about the ability of the service experience to enhance the learning of student participants. Additionally, the students are given “voice” through this research as their commentary unfolds to help others share in and learn from their experience. Such assessment is valuable to the faculty and administration when considering continuation of implementing service learning at the MIHC.
The purpose of this study was to describe students’ experiences, attitudes, and learning outcomes associated with the implementation of this service-learning rotation related to three fundamental questions: Did the service-learning experience increase student awareness of the needs of elderly populations? Did the student possess professional growth as a result of the service-learning experience? Did the student’s understanding of cultural diversity and ethical patient care improve as a result of the service-learning

First, students should be informed that their journals would not be graded, other than pass/fail for meeting the journaling requirement. This helps to ensure that students felt free to accurately depict their thoughts and feelings through their writing. Second, an organized group debriefing of the students should be conducted at the close of their service-learning ex¬perience as a means of member checking. Through this process, faculty members are able to hear from the students, firsthand, about their experiences and compare it to the thematic analysis report gener¬ated by the primary investigator. This comparison will help to verify that what the students report about their experiences in the debriefing session is captured in the analysis. Third, the results of the thematic analysis are subjected to triangulation to reduce inherent bias by confirming conclusions through several different sources of data and types of
For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
The study is credible and trustworthy because Vetter used “triangulated
SLE Introductory paper This autumn I will be participating in a service learning project through UA Little Rock’s School of Social Work. In order to accomplish this goal, I will be volunteering a minimum of twenty hours at Kindred Hospice. As part of my SLE, this document will provide basic information about my chosen agency, the role of the social worker at the agency and, it will serve to clarify my top learning objectives during this project. Kindred Hospice is a division of Kindred health care.
Pacific Union College has been instrumental in shaping my journey as a lifelong learner, both personally and professionally. The institution’s student learning outcome, “Maintaining Lifelong Learning,” emphasizes the importance of intellectual skills, curiosity, and creativity in leading lives of useful human service. Pacific Union College has encouraged and nurtured my passion for learning, highlighting the experiences that have profoundly influenced my approach to interacting with diverse individuals. In this essay, I will reflect upon my experiences at Pacific Union College, both inside and outside the classroom, to illustrate how the diverse course offerings, engaging professors and mentors, extracurricular activities, work experience,
She states that the relationship between action and reflection (“reflective learning”) are crucial to this pedagogy. She stresses that “significant planning and communication” should be practiced throughout the service-learning experience (63). The types of writing assignments for this type of course are endless and include newsletters, blogs, and other media outlets. Additionally, students will become “working writers” learning to communicate and negotiate with the public, which prepares them for their professional future (65). The effectiveness of service-learning for the student and the community can be difficult to measure, but Julier suggests that the outcome can be contingent upon the relationship between the learner, teacher, and the community partner.

Serving Others What is service? When I think of service, I think of when you help others in need. According to Google, the definition of the word service is the action of helping or doing work for someone.
My Service Learning Project had been planned accordingly thanks to my family, I had volunteered with my family at the homeless shelter to serve food and give necessities to the homeless before Christmas time. My personal involvement with the homeless was absolutely attending their priorities such as toiletry, food, assistance, etc. as well as providing a warm hand to be open minded with. I previously had friends who relied on the homeless shelter, and I had credible knowledge on what the homeless were asking for in terms of help. I would engage in involvement or communication with some of the homeless to not only provide their necessities, but positive social interaction.
By having students engage in an activity that will be a positive addition to someone they do not know’s life, the value of service is certainly apparent. A second social work value that was incorporated in this activity is “dignity and worth of the person” (NASW, 2015, p. 5). The message of each of the 150 cards that were given to the veterans was one of gratitude. Not only do these cards show community validation of the sacrifices made by veterans, but they are also acknowledging the individual in a holistic way, further emphasizing the dignity and worth of the person who is receiving the
Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy, which provides an enriching, opportunity for today’s youth to interact with older adults to be able to understand generational differences by way of building meaningful relationships. There are several previous intergenerational learning service studies, but none of them emphasize reflection as a crucial part of service learning. A significant amount of research focuses on the relationships forged during intergenerational service learning, in specific between older adults and high school, college, or graduate students, less is known about the effect that intergenerational service learning has on elementary school students. Fair and Delaplane, set out to expand the research in this area by
Knowing that UW—Madison has the opportunity to give back to the community through a course that is supplementary to my major is very important to me because it would give me an opportunity to both better the community and myself by learning things that cannot be fully understood in a classroom. I am aware that currently there is a service learning course in the nursing department which includes learning about dementia and helping those with the disease. I find this interesting because it allows for a different experience than relying on only books and lectures. Through my various internships in high school, I was able to learn information that I would not have learned in my school and I feel like this course is very similar because it allows me to expand my horizons and learn about biology in a format outside of the classroom. It will allow me to experience new people, ideas, and information so I can apply them to my daily life and
The advantage of triangulating findings is that the data supports itself. In terms of qualitative research, triangulated data allows for a more insightful inductive analysis of what the data represents; as well, triangulation allows for the process orientation of research to validate the why and how of participants’ behaviors. Moreover, McMillan expresses that “triangulation is perhaps the most widely used technique to establish credible findings” (McMillan, 2015, p.
For one week every summer, the senior high youth at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Roseville drop everything to venture somewhere in the United States on a service learning trip. Since I happen to attend that church, and I just so happen to be a senior high youth, I have joined these trips for three years running. Usually, we help out in soup kitchens, do some yard work, or visit homeless shelters. However, our trip during the summer of my junior year was destined to be different from the very beginning.
Description Reflection is a necessary component in learning to regulate opinion, feelings, and actions. Reflection links experience and knowledge by providing an opportunity to explore areas of concern in a critical way and to make adjustments based on these reflections (Knowles Z., Tyler G., 2006). I will be using the Gibbs G (1988) Learning by Doing: A guide to teaching and learning methods (Davies S., 2012).
Mixed Methods – Transformative Design Introduction: Transformative philosophy has been around since the 1980s and 1990s, it arose from individuals who believed that the postpositivist assumptions imposed structural theories that did not fit marginalized people in our society, transformative research is defined as that which “transforms” or causes a major change in thought patterns. It is also one of the philosophies that considered in mixed methods. Historically, the transformative writers have drawn on the work of Marx, Adorno, Marcuse, Habermas, and Freire.
