New York Draft Riot Essay

During the 19th century American had it southern states secede thus causing a civil war between americans and there were 2 sides the Confederates from the south and the Union from the North the war was sparked by the elections of the 16th century. After the Union kind of won the battle of Antietam Lincoln decides to make The Emancipation Proclamation Which freed all the black slaves in the North. Once the Emancipation Proclamation was accepted Lincoln decided to allow African Americans to join the Union Army. This decision ultimately helped the Union in winning the Civil War. When the African Americans were accepted in the Union Army they were put to do labor for the Union and later they were given the opportunity to go fight for their country

Criteria/Measurement The criteria for the question is to be measured according to major and minor length. To prove there was a division in America during the Civil War era there must be a shift in the interaction of the two side in America and the use of slavery affecting the divide. Seeing as the South was pro-slavery and the North wanted to abolish slavery. There are multiple viewpoints in the division in America with slavery.

The deadliest race riot in the United States occurred between May 30 and June 1, 1921. The city of Tulsa grew from 10,000 to 100,000 in just 11 years (3.) Down town Tulsa offered all white residents anything from furniture stores to speakeasies (3.) Segregation forced African Americans to create their own community. This community was known as Greenwood or "The Black Wall Street" (2.)

The death Eugene Williams, one of the majors point of the Chicago Race Riots of 1919, it was one of the things that actually started to make the majority of African-Americans act. Eugene was hit and killed by a thrown rock by a white male on the breakwater, even after his identity was established he wasn’t arrested. Even to make matters worse one of the males accompanying him was arrested instead in the chaos. Of course, many people fought but the majority of the race moved out of the south, the southern states passed new constitutions and laws that dehumanized African-Americans and made them into slaves, they even had to flee from the Ku Klux Klan. This led to The Great Migration, which changed Chicago politically and culturally.

On July 13 1863 riots broke out across New York when federal troops tried to enforce the newly passed draft law against an unwilling population. The draft riots were not only concentrated to New York but Boston MA, Portsmouth NH, Cincinnati OH, Chicago IL, and many other cities as well, but the one in New York was the biggest. There was a lot of death and destruction that took place during the riots. The civil war draft riots were a result of many factors that include resistance to conscription laws, clashes between citizens and immigrants, and racism. These riots are important because they showed that not everyone in the north was willing to take up arms for the government.

For an African-American during the New York City Draft Riots of 1863 the events that took place would be described as nothing less than horrific. This was caused when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863. This stated all slaves within any State, or designated part of a State still in rebellion shall be granted freedom. If any southern state returned to the Union between September and January, whites in that state suppositionally would not lose ownership of their slaves. Despite its limits, free blacks, slaves, and abolitionists across the country considered it as one of the most important actions on behalf of freedom in our nation's history.

GROWING RACIAL TENSIONS The “Red Summer” of 1919 marks peak of rising tensions surrounding the great migration of African Americans from the rural South to the cities of the North that took place during World War I. After the war ended in 1918, servicemen who fought in Europe returned home to find that their jobs in factories, warehouses and mills had been filled by newly arrived Southern blacks or immigrants. Amid financial insecurity, racial and ethnic prejudices ran rampant. Meanwhile, African-American veterans who had risked their lives fighting for the freedom and democracy of the United States were found to have been denied basic rights such as adequate housing and equality under the law. America has a long history with riots, both in urban and rural settings. However, urban riots, and especially urban riots in Cincinnati, have covered the same subject matter for the past 200 years: race. As such, Cincinnati acts as a great representative of the average American city, Los Angeles and New York being the exceptions. Cincinnati’s racially charged past largely lies in place because of its location. Cincinnati’s placement on the border between the north and south means an influx of escaped slaves and later emancipated into a city that once contained and white majority.

The New York Draft Riots of 1863 was a gruesome manslaughter that lasted for 5 days and there were none-stop destruction. Rioters took over and burned government buildings and buildings where the drafts were taken place. The Draft Riots lasted until July 11-16 in 1863. The draft riots can also be known as draft week. During this time only men from the ages twenty to forty-five were able to fight in the war.

The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.
