Is taking a student’s passion away a motivation factor or just cruel? This is the question the “No Pass, No Play” rule poses. The “No Pass, No Play” rule is quite clear to understand: if a student is failing a class they are unable to participate in extracurriculars for three weeks. If they do not raise their grade by then, this treatment continues. This rule takes opportunities away from the future of our country: the students. Extracurricular activities teach valuable lessons to students that could be blocked off by the “No Pass, No Play” rule. Even if a student is failing, the teacher is supposed to help them which nullifies the purpose of the “No Pass, No Play” rule. The “No Pass, No Play” rule should not be in any schools. Students shouldn’t …show more content…
Not only sports teach students valuable lessons. Other extracurriculars, like drama, teaches students life lessons. Drama requires intense concentration as sports and classes do, and also helps teach students skills. As stated by Sam Smith, “Drama, like sports, requires a concentration equal to anything in the classroom. Like sports, functioning within a group is critical. Like sports, the lessons learned are not only applicable to traditional academic courses, but to becoming an educated adult” (Smith 15) This shows how extracurricular activities can also be important. Extracurricular activities are treated as a distraction from one’s education, and a side hobby. It is overlooked that these activities can help students in the classroom. It may be argued that these lessons can just be learned later--that they can just be a sort of afterthought. However, it is much easier to have these lessons learned and known. One of these classroom skills taught is memorization. It was also said by him that, “It is remarkable that, given the repeated need to memorize in school, so little time is spent developing the skill. One of the few places in school where one can learn how to memorize is during the production of a play” (Smith 15). Students are taught how to memorize, like shown in the quote. It is also shown that little time is spent practicing this, and students must figure out how to do so on their own. …show more content…
Many schools abide by the rule that teachers help failing students. The previously mentioned Dwight D. Eisenhower middle school is one of these schools. In an interview with the principal, it was said, “If a student is failing a class, it is the fault of the teacher not the student. It is the teacher’s responsibility to make sure no student fails.” Teachers are here to help the students. The students just need to get the help. As long as the students are getting the help, there’s no point in the no pass, no play rule. For school teams, the coaches are typically teachers. The teachers understand the struggle students are going through, “Coaches are very understanding about a student putting schoolwork ahead of sports. They will be understanding if a student needs to attend extra help after school before coming to a practice.” Students can balance school and sports, they just need to find the balance first. Coaches will understand the stress the students are under, that if they get a failing average they’ll temporarily be kicked off the team. The no pass, no play rule adds even more stress onto these students. Various staff members are in charge of making sure students don’t fail. “Administrators have to implement board policy. The way to do that is to insist on the teacher’s role in making sure no student fails.” Since there’s so much precaution as to
However, students show commitment in staying on the team so they try to focus on their grades too. In fact, the university of Chicago, becoming a man-sports edition creates lasting improvements in the boys study habits and grade point averages. This evidence clearly shows that there is no harm into the student’s grade. The most convincing reason why high school sports are beneficial is that being in a school sports shows and improves social and participation around others.
Some people at Webb City High School would be very angry to find out that they will no longer be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities due to their grades. The students who really want to play sports though would get into gear and get their grades up to prove that they deserve to play. What is a School without education? Pointless. Other people in the community believe that the “C rule” is not fair for the people who do not participate in any extracurricular activities because they will not be being punished.
If much interest does not come back from a certain sport or a certain gender, the school does not have to add any sports to their programs. However, in the sports that have been established, they are obligated to continue following the rules of Title
High school coaches should not be required to give equal playing time to all players who make the team. Kids in society have been handed things their entire life. There has been little to no sense of accomplishment after earning a spot or position on a team. Spots should be earned by being the best at what someone does, not for pitty and for moral victories to make them feel good. “In high school, kids should understand playing time is earned.
Out of high school, many students receive scholarships to follow their passion of playing sports; these college athletes take on the responsibility of being a leader to their universities and their team. Student athletes should view playing sports as an addition to completing their studies, not a replacement. Many believe student athletes should solely focus on bettering their “game” in order to make it to the professional sports league. While this is important, student athletes should also be expected to go above and beyond with their actions in and out of the classroom. College athletes should be held accountable for their education as well as their behavior, by both them-selves and their coaches.
High school athletes need someone who is concerned about them, not the number of wins and losses throughout the season. Many sports coaches start the season with having the best intentions for the athletes, however, as the season progresses on the goals and motivation can begin to change due to the competitive nature. The important protocols and safety guidelines will sometimes be overlooked if the coach is unaware of signs and desperate for the win. Scott Sailor, the President of the National Athletic Trainer 's Association states, “We look at the big picture and whether what they are doing is going to be in their best interest or create more problems later on. Our job is to bring everyone together with the health of the athlete as the No. 1 priority..."
Have you ever worked really hard at something and have been proud of yourself or your team? I know I have. At Foley Schools there is a problem. Our second year high kick dance team, The Falconettes, are not taken seriously by many students and even some coaches. Because of that, many dancers on the team start to get discouraged and can make our athletes feel embarrassed about their sports.
In Neil H. Petrie essay, which was published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Neil H. Petrie argues that colleges have a hypocritical attitude towards student athletes. After reading and gathering all the evidence from the essay I'm more incline to agree with Neil H. Petrie for the evidence he proposes is to constrain to ignore. Neil H. Petrie’s evidence for these arguments come not from boring old statistics but from fist hand experience witch makes the arguments much more compelling. One can see Neil H. Petrie addresses these arguments towards four main focus groups are the student athletes, the teachers, the coaches and the school system itself. Neil H. Petrie proposes that student athletes are being used for a means to an end and can simply be replaced at a moments notice leaving
In a New York Times article titled “Why Student Athletes Continue to Fail”, published in April 2015 by Daniel Openheimer, it says that universities like UNC that are part of the NCAA offer classes for athletes that are “no show” classes, where no work is required but they are given good grades. This is not just at UNC but many division one schools are allowing this to happen, as well as breaking academic ineligibility rules, and committing other types of academic fraud. If this is happening, then after their athletic careers are over, their education is invalidated. Oppenheimer also goes on to describe a survey taken where student athletes inwardly rank academics as more important than sports, but they all believe that their teammates hold sports to be more important. Thus, an ironic cycle of peer pressure is formed.
That's why I think athletes should be required to take a drug test before playing a sport. If a student is really interested in that sport he or she will try to maintain being healthy. Drugs are very dangerous and if the student is playing a sport this may cause them to stop trying hard.
Imagine your best friends making the school soccer team and you getting cut, because your “not ready” or there is “no room”. Trust me been there done that, the most regretted thing about school sports for many are tryouts. Tryouts are the worst thing about sports, they bring nothing but more stress to your plate. It is understandable that everyone can not make the team but it is a terrible thing to cut children by telling them they did not have enough room on the team or are not ready to be on it. Students should not have to tryout for school sports.
The No Pass, No Play rule requires students to acquire excellent grades to play sports. Children in the same situation as Frances could be discouraged to try in school or even drop out of school. Sports may seem alarming at first glance, but digging deeper, it is present that sports aid children in their present and future endeavors. Not everyone lives the same lives.
Do you think it’s fair if a student fails a class and still makes a school sports team other than a student who has all passing grades to not make a sports team? This is completely unfair because if the person who has failing grades is on a sports team, it means they could keep failing and they don't get any punishment. The ¨No Pass, No Play Rule” states that you have to have passing grades to play school sports (¨Project Fact File” 160). Passing grades matter because you need to get a good education and make it on to college and be successful. The writer in the article, ¨How Important Are Good Grades to Career Success,¨ ¨Kids need to focus and do well in school, which will get them into a ´good´ college¨ (1).
Rebuttal Analysis: While some people may think that extracurriculars aren't worth the stress and commitment and that it lessens academic performance, the evidence above proves that extracurriculars are in fact worth it because they do improve academic performance. (4b) Significance: This demonstrates the impact that extracurricular activities can have on a student's attitude and academic performance toward school. Not only can they lead to higher grades, but they can also improve a student’s well being and enjoyment of
The character Jaques in Shakespeare’s As You Like It says “All the world's a stage,/ and all the men and women merely players;/ They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts...” This universally known phrase continues to ring true in today’s society. The presence of drama in the classroom has countless significant benefits. It helps students develop a deeper understanding of the past and present while improving their empathy skills, boosts their confidence/self-esteem, and improves their ability to collaborate with other people.
