Of Mice and Men is about Lennie and George in which Lennie decided to feel a girls skirt because he liked the type of material. So George went with Lennie to escape and not get in trouble and decided to go to a bunkhouse where they work and are provided with food and a place to live. George and Lennie are best friends and so they went together. Lennie has the mind of a 6 year old and needs to be with George. When quit their jobs, George planned out a dreamland of how they will live when they get enough money to move to their own house. Lennie is huge, sweet, caring, unsmart guy in the book. Steinbeck was successful at making Lennie sympathetic because he cares about everything and will always be there for George but other characters keep sizing up to him and he doesn’t know how to fight. His sense of touch is very useful throughout the course of the book. “I get to tend the rabbits.” This trait of Lennie 's affects the story in a bad way because since he likes to pet things so much, he pets them too much that he kills them on accident. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck, placed the character, George Milton, with a predicament of killing his life-long best friend, Lennie Small. George knew he didn’t have another option other than to kill Lennie. He made his decision based on many different factors: George finally realized how much trouble Lennie caused him, he knew Curley would brutally kill Lennie, and George did not want to have the regret Candy had about not killing his dog himself. His Innocence just makes him more of a likeable character. He acts just like a child in this passage the most. You see it by his reaction with the mouse, and the ketchup on the beans and finally the tending of the rabbits on the farm. He also thinks about George in a very loving way; just as if he was George’s brother. This will make Lennie a very likeable character towards the readers.
Lennie is dumb, but listens to George because he trusts him and Lennie gets hurt and doesn’t get mad at George. Lennie always wants to make George happy. "If it were here you could have some. I don’t want no ketchup." (Steinbeck, 11)
Sacrifice is needed in order to have a successful friendship. Best friends will sacrifice anything and everything in order to protect each other. John Steinbeck shows a great example of sacrifice for friendship in Of Mice and Men. This is a story where two best friends work together in order to one day achieve their goals, but Lennie kills the wife of the ranch owner’s son, and George shoots Lennie in the back of the head in order to keep him safe. Lennie on the other hand is Large, strong, but is mentally slow and cannot seem to fully comprehend all situations. Lennie loves to pet and hold soft things, whether it is a dead mouse, a nice dress, or even a puppy. Lennie also does not know his own strength, and these two characteristics that Lennie possesses makes him a somewhat dangerous man. George and Lennie head to a ranch so they can acquire enough money for their dream job of owning their own ranch, where Lennie can tend to the rabbits, and where no one is the in charge of them. While he did not mean to kill them, he did intend to hurt them, or at least to punish them like George would to him. Because George was his role model, he would mimic how he sat and even behaved. This was Lennie's own way of being in control of something like George was in control of everything to him. That is not to say Lennie was intentionally mean in any way possible, just that he had some idea of what he was doing, even though it was not fully formed and he did not fully understand the result of his actions.
