Mattie M. Wood Professor Jonnie Genova ENG 122- 033 19 November 2015 According to the Oxford Dictionary a fraternity is “A male students' society in a university or college” (OED). This generally would be how any person asked what a fraternity is would explain it as, but has the idea of a fraternity changed? Is it still a male student society or is it more just a group young men working together to get girls? The first fraternity that came to life was in 1776 and was named Phi Beta Kappa. The motto for Phi Beta Kappa was “Love of wisdom, guide of life.” This fraternity was men and women connecting to fill each student’s life up with something meaningful, they volunteered, and threw safe gatherings around campus. After interviewing Jeff Karlson a Brown University “Whiskey” Fraternity Alum and Garrett Wassom a pledge of Chi Phi at Cu Boulder, the differences between the times showed. The questioned the two were asked was “Did you or have you experienced rape on or associated with your fraternity?” the reply from Jeff was “Fraternities’ were a big part of my life and during my 4 years at Brown University I never experiences “rape” or anything close to that. Its upsetting to see and hear that your argument for this project is about rape, but then again maybe things have changed since I went to school.” Jeff has been out of school for 12 years now so the fraternity scene has changed since he graduated, but even an old alum is disappointed in what new fraternities have become. Garrett on the other hand gave a clear and honest response sharing, “This is my home now Mattie, and these are my brothers some are good but they can do bad, that doesn't mean I'm saying they would rape a girl but that doesn't mean they wouldn't in the moment and or while drunk. I can say that I don't believe any of these guys would rape a girl if he was sober or so I would hope.” He even understands that sexual assaults could most likely happen, but that clearly doesn’t effect that he is associating himself with the type of people who would rape someone. These two interviewees had drastically different opinions on rape due to the fact that fraternities aren’t what they used to
In the article “Die Trying”, Katie J.M. Baker points out the difficulties of being a rape victim in Alabama and nationwide. The article “Die Trying” talks about a student named Megan Rondini who attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa who accused T.J. Bunn Jr. of rape. The events that led to sexual assault happened in July 1, 2015 at night where Megan Rondini went to Innisfree Irish Pub with a couple of her sorority sisters and drank five cups of beer. After drinking the beer Megan Rondini blacked out and found herself in T.J. Bunn’s car with his friend going back to his house.
The founders, who were three young African American students wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service (About Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,2016). The Phi Beta Sigma brothers were not judged based on their backgrounds, race, nationality, skin tone, and hair texture. What matter the most was their heart and strong commitment
In this New York Times article, Rubenfeld sets off his argument by establishing the gruesome and generalized information about rape culture at university. Rubenfeld states, “Female
We hope you will remember these years fondly — the bonds of friendships you made, the opportunities for self-growth that defined you as an individual, and the intellectual development you experienced both in and out of the classroom. The Fraternity wants you to remember that this is not the end of your experience as a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, but another
Can you imagine what your life would be like if you hadn’t decided to join Phi Mu Delta? What life lessons, friendships, and memories would you have missed out on? This fraternity uses their emotional appeal to court other members. On the official Phi Beta Sigma web page, an individual would immediately see many different pictures of members of the organization and various events that they've hosted. These pictures portray brotherhood, togetherness and service in which could spark feelings amongst their audience; using emotional appeal to attract people into being interested with this particular organization. According to the Phi Beta Sigma website, there is a particular club within the fraternity on which guide and support young adolescents. This extension of the organization is called Sigma Beta Club.

Author, Lisa Handler writes,” The construction of such friendships is not magical. It is a more or less self-conscious creation of sorority life. The experience of pledging, especially its shared stress, is intended to create solid and putatively everlasting bonds among sisters” (240). It is no secret that women have been excluded from the education system for centuries.
The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.

Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
The Hunting Ground; a powerful book that sheds light on the mistreatment and backlash that victims of sexual assault have received, including the so-called “rape-hoax culture.” , provides context for a growing social movement fueled by the stories and accounts of these victims. In a generation that is no stranger to the pressures of life, the appeal of sex, drugs, and alcohol to escape stress and demands, can create a hotbed for illegal activity, like sexual violence, on college campuses. Many young college students choose to go out to frat parties on the weekend to let loose and have fun, never thinking that they could find themselves unclothed on the dirty floor of a mysterious bedroom, with no recollection of how they got there. Even worse,
The tenth National President, Dorothy I. Height, wrote: “To preserve tradition, we must bring it into the current decade and make sure it remains viable for decades to come.” Protocol is something mandatory for all sorority’s and fraternity’s. In Delta Sigma Theta protocol is prescribed as respect and recognition for founders, the Nation President and Past National Presidents, the Regional Director/Representative, Chapter Charter Members, and Honorary Members. It is a fact that every Sorority and Fraternity has some type of tradition. In Delta Sigma Theta there are three rites of passage.
A few short months following the rape, Brzonkala filed a complaint against the respondents under Virginia Tech’s Sexual Assault Policy. During the conducted hearing at Virginia Tech, Morrison confessed to having sexual contact with Christy, even though she had told him “no.” twice. With much consideration, Virginia Tech’s
Statement of the Problem Alcohol-related sexual assaults happen frequently within a college campus. Although sexual assault on campus has become a growing concern for the public, many of these sexual assaults go unreported so it is hard to know how severe of a problem it really is. Even though the majority of these sexual assaults are committed by acquaintances known to the victim many will be disciplined lightly or not at all by the university board. It is important to understand that sexual assault does not just mean rape, but also any sexual contact that involved force upon a person without that person’s consent. Based on the university’s alcohol policy on campus, I want to know if the environment created creates a setting where sexual assaults
