A little over two years ago, I started working as a Community Support Individual for Pathways Transition Programs LLC. My primary responsibility is to teach children various coping skills to manage their behavior, I have determined that I want to be able to address the emotions behind the behaviors. My desire is to be able to help the children I work with come to terms with their past histories so they can move on in their lives towards adoption and other positive outcomes. Sometimes, the children are still going through issues such as, on-going traumas, the lost of a parent due to death or incarceration, etc and I would like to develop the skill set to be able to address these issues. I see pursuing my degree through Argosy University as being the next step to take in order to develop a competency in counseling. …show more content…
In the short term, I would like to complete my classes and become an LAPC. I plan on continuing to work in mental health for either a private or public mental health agency and earning my LPC. I would like to continue to work with the current population that I am involved with which are families who are economically underserved . I am applying to this specific program because it has come highly recommended to me by multiple clinicians that I have worked with as a program that would appropriately prepare me for the work I want to do. There are a multitude of reasons why I am attracted to this program including the evening classes, that it focuses specifically on community counseling, and that it has come highly recommended. After reviewing the course catalog and seeing the types of classes offered, I believe this program will prepare me to reach my goals. I also have a lot to offer the program including coming from a diverse background, my personal experience, and my work

Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with areas of study in Psychology and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas of study, can open the doors to many different career paths ranging from human services to research to counseling. Personally, I would like to seek a career that will allow me to have an impact on other people’s lives. For this reason, I choose to explore the career of a Foster Care Placement Specialist. To better understand the, job responsibilities, employment requirements and pros and cons of this career I decided to seek counsel from my friend, Rachel Zimmerman, a Family Services Specialist with the Virginia Department of Social Services.

Bethany Hill once stated, “Every child you pass in the hall has a story that needs to be heard, maybe you are the one that needs to hear it.” That quote works because the person might have trouble at home and they might need a counselor to almost let a burden off of their shoulders and tell their story to. Some of the reasons Career Cruising chose being a school counselor for me because I like training and teaching, working with children and providing advice. I am most interested in pursuing a career as a school counselor because of its likeable working conditions, straightforward responsibilities and simple career preparations.

I will need to learn how to deal with the fact that there will be clients that will remind me of people from my past or things from my past (Countertransference) and it may be hard for me to counsel them. I have been in abusive situations in the past and know that I will have clients who are doing drugs or drinking alcohol and their actions or words may “knock” me back to my past that could potentially make me feel that this is the wrong career for me. I am currently in counseling myself to battle the demons from my past and work toward bettering my life and I feel that continuing my own counseling along with attending meetings, getting together with my female friends and talking to God will help me to deal with my career choice as a counselor and not let Countertransference or Transference get in my way of helping to lead my clients in the direction of a healthy

I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
