“Let me see your sticks.” Through barred vision and with borrowed gloves I present my stick for inspection, it’s once flourescent tape now caked with dirt. All eyes are present on the midfield, impatiently waiting for the ref to signal the start of both teams’ playoff run. I look to my other midfielders, jockeying for position, waiting to scoop up the ball that pops out from the faceoff. For now, I’m alone. At the beginning of spring I would have been just another spectator on the sidelines, refilling water bottles for the varsity players, waiting for another practice to prove my worth to the team. Now? I’m taking faceoffs at center field. The ref signals for the faceoff men to get into position, he lays the ball between us, and then blows the whistle. The game has begun.
Joining the lacrosse team, supplemented by joining the wrestling team and moving away for my first year of college, has helped to me recognize who I am as a person and where I want to be in my life. I wish to become the best version of myself that I possibly can be, and when I

She has served as a role model to me of not only compassion, but of showing respect and love to anyone, no matter their circumstances. I have experienced firsthand the horrors and miracles of this profession. In 2011, I was able to see through a patient’s eyes when my Uncle was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Standing by through dozens of rounds of chemotherapy, watching the deterioration of muscle and memory, it was excruciating, watching a man I had known my entire life being molded into someone new by this cancer. Those years of watching my uncle fight through chemotherapy inspired my dreams to become a person who can help those that are in pain, to heal their wounds and to be able to tell a family that their loved one will make it through the
Sonja Eve Singletary was born in 1962 to a small family in Florida. She lived outside of Texas for most of her life, and it was during high school that she realized that she wanted to go into the medical field. Thus she decided to leave Florida and attended Clemson University as an undergraduate. Singletary then received her medical degree at the medical school of South Carolina, and it was during her times at the University of South Carolina where she went on a trip to the M.D Anderson Center at Houston and witnessed the family-like environment. She then realized that M.D Anderson Center was the right place to go for her, and decided to accept a job there where she was also a professor.
Clara Barton perfectly exemplifies what I’d like to accomplish in my life and nursing career. She was fearless in her mission, tireless in her efforts to help others, and effective in creating real change that lasted far beyond her the end of her life. After all, she’s the only the creator of the little ol’ American Red Cross. Barton’s service career began at the beginning of the Civil War, when she was forty years old, proving that people can make a difference at any point in their lives. Within months, she set up a distribution center to get supplies to the troops that needed them.
For example, as a former gymnast, cheerleading was a sport that I had been passionate about for many years, but never put much thought into joining a cheerleading team, because I used to be a shy and introverted person and I was having a hard time to speak and present myself confidently in front of others. However, one of my best friends mentioned tryouts to me during my high school freshman year. Excited by the opportunity, I decided to go to the tryout. After a year on the team, I could not only confidently cheer in front of huge crowds, but was also able to interact with others without any self doubt.
On a cold, frosty, snow cover night in November at Welcome Home Stadium, was when my life changed. That night, two teams played for the chance to call themselves champions of 6th-grade football. All game, my team and I battled against the mighty Wilmington Hurricanes. We fought all game to win and finally we got the ball back with less than under a minute left and down by 4 points. The crowd was quieter than a church mouse as my coaches huddled us up during a timeout, and in that timeout, my coaches looked to me for answers.
It was a humid morning in Lawrence, Massachusetts as our second football scrimmage of the year was set to begin. My heart pounded as Coach Stevenson called me into the
I am a member of several clubs and sports. The most demanding of these is hockey. Hockey is a very time-consuming sport that I have loved for all of my life. However, I have always told myself that I am a student first and that playing sports is a privilege. The numerous sports and clubs I have participated in have created relationships and memories that I will hold with me forever.
She is an advocate for many people especially the transgender community. She does not understand how much she impacts people which is evident when she tells interviewers that she is not a role model, because she doesn’t view
How Sports Have Affected Me When entering high school I knew that I wanted to be involved. Being involved meant that I would make unbreakable bonds with teammates and find out what I had to offer them, my team. My high school had so many activities to offer, so I decided it wouldn’t hurt to try a few. The sport that I will never forget is cheerleading.
In college I want to push myself to stay in shape and have people look up to me. To say I played lacrosse in college is something I have always wanted to say. I am a dedicated athlete. Each sport I play I always give 100%. When I earn my spot on the team there will be no question why I am there.
Just 2 minutes left the sun half way set, the crowd cheering and most of all the scouts not blinking paying attention to every detail, play and decision each one of us makes, I see the ball come off the rim and the other team grab the rebound and their other play already across the court just past half court I knew what I had to do. With no thought or anything I break out running across the court chasing their player knowing he was going for a fast break lay-up I knew I could catch there was no doubt about it but the question was would I block the ball or not I can feel the eyes staring at us curiously wonder what will happen. Just like I predicted I see his hand turn upside down getting ready to lay it up I take 2 more steps and leap as hard as I can towards the ball staring at the ball and nothing else all I cared about was saving my team from those 2 points and looking good on the court and on that stats sheets, that was a decision I would later pay for. I did what I had practice and done hundreds of times before at the park I swat my hand towards the ball as hard as I can, I hear when my hand hits it and it bounces off the backboard not thinking about my landing instead of preparing for the fall I prepare myself to start running back across court but that wouldn’t happen when I landed I felt a pop in my knee’s
A. Attention Getter- I will never forget the day my mom called me and told me that she had found a lump in her breast. She immediately went to get a mammogram, and sure enough, it was breast cancer. B. Credibility – Me and my mom have always been close, but her love and generosity amazes me more and more everyday. C. Audience Relevancy-
In addition, I learned how to deal with difficult personalities as well as how to commit myself to a team and a sport. Furthermore, I learned that I was a role model for other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career. As I enter into this next phase of my life, I aspire to keep the dream of being my version of a Pink Power Ranger alive. I look forward to attending
After the sudden loss of my oldest brother in 2011, my life changed in the blink of an eye. While trying to overcome this heartbreaking experience was one of the most challenging things ever faced with, his death soon turned into a true inspiration to me. Not only do I cherish all the memories I was able to share with him over the years, I soon came to realization that tomorrow is not a promise to anyone and to live life to the fullest. With this being said, having the opportunity to have an impact on someone everyday whether through communication, actions and/or attitude to help heal is something very powerful to me. Nursing is a profession that allows individuals to open new doors to learn something new and making the best of everyday for each
To get good grades and be a stellar athlete k discerned myself from social concerns and centered my thoughts on what was needed to be done to get to the next step of my life. This mindset was enhanced by the people I kept as company who shared the same attitudes. It created an individualistic mindset. However through the different people I experienced along with acknowledgement of my Christian Faith and being apart of a sport team. Showed me that it is more important to help others and focus on “us”, “we”, or “them” more than it is to focus on “me” and “I”.
“EVERYBODY ON THREE, 1 2 3 WARRIORS (everyone yelled). Coming off the sideline I felt that this game was going to be a devastating loss, but still had the gut feeling to play as hard as I could. FOOOH! Went the whistle as we started off passing the ball to each other. “ Pass the ball over here” I yelled with all my might.
