Personal Narrative: My American Identity

What is an American identity to you? Some people say it is if your born an American. Others say you have to speak English and have American traditions. To be honest, their is no definite definition of having an American identity. Their are many different cultures and races that have an American identity.

Asian American Identities There are people all over the world who have come to America to seek a greater life. With America having the largest immigrant population compared to other countries, there are always people migrating into the country. People all over the world may be coming here to pursue their own dreams or to escape persecution. The immigrant population has increased so much, that about one-third of U.S. population are now people of color.

In this essay we will attempt to explain what is an American. We will compare two different pieces of literature. We will analyze "In Response to Executive Order 9066" and "Mericans" to see how the authors define what it means to be an American. In my opinion cultural heritage and physical appearance do not determine what is an American. America is a melting pot.

In the year 1791, political activist and author, Thomas Paine composed a novel called Rights of Man. In the book, Paine expresses his point of view on American society as perfection. He describes the United States as, “Made up, as it is, of people from different nations.” All throughout American history there are many things that make America the diverse nation we are today. America is recognized as the “great melting pot” implying that our country where contrasting cultures along with beliefs blend together to mold a distinctively American identity.

To me being American means many things. To start off I believe that being American has nothing to do with from where you may originally be from whether it is a place in Latin America or Europe. I believe that it has to do with the ideals that you believe in. I believe an American is someone who was born in the United States and was raised by the ideals and beliefs of this country. An American is someone who respects the values of others and gains knowledge and perspective through their differences.

To be an American Americans often look to the American flag when thinking about what defines Americans. Despite that, being an American is much more than the flag. Various authors around America write about their experiences in America and how different people are treated. “America and I” by Anzia Yezierska and “Growing up Asian in America” by Kesaya E. Noda both write about their different experiences moving and growing up in America. “America'' by Walt Whiteman, however, talks about people in America being treated equally despite having differences.

What makes Americans, Americans first The physical location makes you an American, if you are on United States soil then you are considered an American. If you live in the United States than you have all the rights that United States born people have. Next an American is someone who is free. Who has the right to believe what/ who they want to believe.

Michael Walzer, on the other hand, emphasizes the idea of pluralism in his article “What Does it Mean to Be an “American”?”. Pluralism emphasizes the idea that Americans embrace their other identities, instead of assimilating together to one identity.

America has been established as a country by immigrants, been industrialized by immigrants, and basically has been made by immigrants. These immigrants haven’t just come from England, these immigrants came from all parts of the world like Russia, Mexico, Italy, Ghana, and so on. With all the immigrants coming, cultures, beliefs, clothing, and languages come also. With all these influences and ideas going into the melting pot, there cannot be one particular way in which one looks from America. This is because the American identity is not something shown on the face; rather the American identity is made of diversity, with cultures that contribute to the making of the American Identity.

American identity American identity is an identity of people who share the same beliefs, culture, values and things like same history and political views. From the beginning of history, Americans have defined themselves through their traditions that are based on ethnicity, work, play, community life and generally, their diverse cultures. However, America is becoming more and more diverse as time passes by, raising questions as to what it really means by an American identity. How Americans see themselves today and how the world views them is a question that many people are asking themselves today. Whether there is a culture that is well based on the culture and values of the Americans or not, it is difficult to define what an American identity

Millions of people from all over the world immigrate into the United States in order to fulfill their dreams and earn the title of American. Many people come to America for their own reasons, mostly for better way of life and more freedom of expression. The accepted school of thought is if one is born in the United States or naturalized through a set process, they are an American. Being an American is more than being a legalized citizen of the country, but rather, recognizing the vision and ideas of a better society that surrounds the belief of liberty, equality, and democracy. In today 's society of the world, there are many cultures inside of one country. American culture is a great culture that people with different ideas should open their minds too. Many people from the different countries come here and have a different beliefs and ideals. The United States is a multicultural nation, home to many racial, traditional and diverse groups. When people talk about America, there are so many things that people from around the world admire and learn.

An American identity is what makes you or others American. For example, traditions or anything that has to do with people coming together as a community. If you ask my generation of what it means to be an American, most of them will answer with “ living in America” or say sports is a huge part of being an American. They’re not wrong.
