Throughout my life, I have traveled to many different cities in the United States. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to experience staying in a different country or foreign culture for an extended period. One experience that I experienced culture shock in would be my travels to Mississippi.
About six years ago, I joined my grandmother’s family in their travel to her native hometown of Holly Springs, Mississippi to visit her relatives. I was skeptical about the trip, seeing as this would be my first trip to the south, but my grandmother assured me that everything would be fine. Upon our arrival to the city, the first thing I noticed was the complete change of scenery from my hometown in St. Louis. I was so happy to be away from St.

My grandmother’s family had invited me to participate in farming and agricultural activities to pass the time. This confused me increasingly. I’ve never farmed a day in my entire life, and the family insisted that I helped them. I agreed to help them farm, not knowing what may happen next, which led to more confusion and stress afterward. The farm was not clean, to say the least, as there was mud and dirt everywhere that ruined my clothing. I was expected to feed cows and bulls, worrying if the animals may attack me. My shoe had also got stuck in the pond the family went fishing in. Everyone would meet near my great-grandmother’s house to converse and play games, but there was not adequate space in her two-bedroom house for everyone, leaving many to sit outside fighting mosquitos and ticks.
Over time, I began to adapt to my circumstances. I wore insect repellent to prevent the mosquitos and ticks from biting me. I also had the opportunity to farm again, but this time I wore proper farming attire. I had an opportunity to connect with the animals and realized they were not so bad after all.
My trip to this city gradually transitioned from a frustrating experience into a life altering one. I began to understand the community and the process used to keep it functioning. It helped me grow as I learned things I thought I never dreamed of. Although I was skeptical about the trip at first, I realized it was a trip that changed my outlook on the south, and
Within the walls of my home, nearly everything can be heard. In past years, both my grandmother and my great-uncle had departed, which resulted in difficulties with the farm. Sharing the farm with my father’s half-brother, Gary, would
I felt happy that I was going to Alabama again. I like seeing my grandparents and I like that they are still there. I think the weather is going to be warm and I am thinking about having a fun time when I am there. I was very happy to hear my mom and dad tell me that I was going to Alabama.
In summary, on 09/21/15 at 0418 hours I was patrolling the area of 1600 S. Laramie Ave., at which time I observed a male subject with a youthful appearance walking northbound 16th Street. I made contact with the subject, at which time he identified himself as (Rosas, Alexis DOB 04/21/97). While speaking with Rosas, I detected a strong odor of fresh cannabis emanating from his person. Rosas related he had some cannabis in his sweater pocket. I recovered a silver box containing a green leafy substance from Rosas ' right sweater pocket.
When I Went To Florida I went to Florida after 4th grade in the summer. When we went to Florida, Jaxon my sisters, brother came with us. The night before we left he stayed at my house. When we left the next morning we left at 3:00 A.M. While we were on our way we both had to sit in the very back of the car because my sisters came with us. The ride there was not fun at all.
My move from my home state of Maryland to Georgia has greatly influenced my goals and perspectives. When I lived in the city area of Maryland, I had a limited viewpoint of life as a person who knew only of the city and had relaxed belief of living only within my comfort zone of what a city had to offer, however that changed when I moved to Georgia. Georgia proved itself to be a very different experience for me. Georgia is a lot bigger than Maryland so there was more place for its cities to be more spread apart and the environment had a more forestry background than what I knew at the young age. The change of setting and accustoms associated from the very different places made me realize that depending on a person’s position one object can be
We took only the essentials and traveled to New Orleans, where family was waiting to take us in. I didn't like the idea of leaving the only home I had ever known, but I liked New Orleans all the same. During my teen years, I wrestled with the idea of returning to New York, but I found a certain comfort in NOLA and so I eventually decided to stay.
Now, the laid back southern life to me, is the way to go! No one is ever in a hurry it seems, just moseying along at their own tempo of life. Sitting back relaxing in the yard with family and friends talking about everything under the sky, laughing and cutting up with one another, having a cook-out or a late night bonfire enjoying the night air, sippin’ on some sweet tea, is what is special in my heart.
Being from Louisiana, I was raised to always have my own back. My family is very big, I have 3 sisters, 2 brothers. I live with my mom and step-dad and occasionally visit my biological dad and step- mom. My family are encouraging and sometimes can be helpful. They expect the best from me being that I am the oldest child.
Getting down to Nebraska was harsh and the trail was dusty. The children like me had to take care of the animals. Jim, Antonia and myself became really good friends after living next door to each other for a while and we do everything together. When I work, I help my dad to plant and harvest crops and hunt for food. We planted and harvested corn, potatoes, pumpkin, wheat, peas, carrots and tomatoes.
People take the places they 're from for granted or do not appreciate as much as they should. I reside in Houston now, but i will always know Baton Rouge is my home, and that’s where i want to raise my family and be able to look up and feel my dad smiling down upon us, this trip would have meant the world to him and i hope one day i will be able to look down while me and my son go to a LSU tiger game and see the pride and enjoyment that we had and what he has passed
Both stories’ expositions establish why the protagonists would seek belonging from their families, viewing them as their home. Importantly, the inciting incidents in the stories – misreading aloud the pronunciation of knife and the fish dinner – permanently change the narrators’ perception of home and belonging, thereby influencing who they grow up to become and the choices they make. Souvankham Thammavongsa’s narrator Joy strengthens her familial relations, whilst Thien’s narrator becomes distressed about what her place of home and sense of belonging has become. Consequently, Joy’s character develops into a protector for her family, and Thien’s narrator chooses to distance herself from her culture, the hurt associated outweighing positive memories and familiarity. The authors’ exploration of the complicated effects of home and belonging on children’s personal development, especially those from immigrant families, reflects reality as such feelings, whether it be the prevailing presence or absence of them, may influence who a person will become.
I was born as a woodsman but I didn’t want to be lonely so I decided to get married with the Munchkin Girl but I had to work to make money to buy a new house for the Munchkin Girl. The Munchkin girl lived with a old woman that was lazy and did none of the house work. The old lady didn’t want the Munchkin girl to leave her so she set off to the Wicked Witch and she promised her two sheep and a cow.
Imagine that it’s summertime, year 1955 in Chicago. You are 14 years old and your uncle wants you to ride on a train with him and your cousins down south, Mississippi to be exact, because he has been asked to conduct a funeral. You are excited, not because of the funeral, but because you get to ride on a train with your family to a state you have never seen before. The very thought of spending any part of your summer in a new place, should not only excite you, your mind should be racing with anticipated joy of seeing a new place, meeting new people and experiencing new things. Towards the end of your trip, you should be anxious to return home, knowing that you will have lots of fun stories to tell your family and friends.
so I prepared to fix and mend clothes. As soon as I sat down to sew up a hole in my dress there was a knock at the door. The children scrambled each one trying to get to the door first, my youngest son won, and victoriously jerked the door open. I peered out and saw the village leader. I knew something was wrong, he never visited houses himself unless something devastating had happened.
My mom and my grandma followed close behind, most likely enjoying my uncharacteristically excessive confidence, which they hadn’t seen before. I had an affinity for the city. It made me feel like I belonged, like I wasn’t alone. An accumulation of my dreams was happening before my eyes.
