“You must be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Ghandi was one of the greatest masters of change that has ever lived. To better understand my purpose in life, I’ve spent much time reflecting on his inspirational words. What change would I like to see in the world and how can I be that change? I grew up in a town so small that our community college was surrounded by cornfields on three sides. There were few opportunities in such a small school, especially when it came to scholarships. I am eager to bring additional scholarship opportunities to my community college, starting with the Presidential scholarship from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) for which I could be the first awardee from McHenry County College (MCC). Once at IIT, I hope to challenge the status quo by developing a new innovative program as a collaborative effort between multiple disciplines. The rigorous studies I undertake at IIT will prepare me to create …show more content…
I’ll begin by increasing future MCC students’ awareness of this generous scholarship opportunity. MCC’s Chi Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa includes guest speakers at their monthly meetings. The Phi Theta Kappa faculty advisors have already extended an open invitation for me to speak at their monthly meetings next year. I see this as an opportunity to discuss how I won such a prestigious award with some of MCCs highest achieving students and encourage them to do the same. I will also utilize the strong relationships I’ve built with the MCC scholarship office, as well as the science and mathematics departments, to increase awareness of the Presidential scholarship. I am eager to visit my old high school so that I may speak with students and teachers about IIT and STEM related
At the Smithfield Court Community Center on Sept. 30 the Smithfield Court/ Elyton Walk club acknowledged Miles College senior social work major Tiffany Taylor who was presented a $5,802 scholarship from the Housing Authority Birmingham District. Taylor decided at an early age that she wanted to further her education. She has seen many people from her neighborhood lose their lives from being in the streets and didn 't want to be another statistic. Miles College was her first choice because it is a Historically Black College and University. " To further my education at a HBCU means that I am receiving the best education by teachers who look just like me.
When reflecting on choosing the first H. Preston Herring Scholarship recipient, in her husband honor, Ginny Herring recalls being drawn to Eric Schwartz and his life story. Several of the nominees would’ve been perfect but just kept coming back to Eric. Eric’s life story was compelling and really touched Ginny. Eric served his country, her had goals, was a non traditional aged student, and a true appreciation for a college education, and Ginny wanted to reward the struggled he had gone through. It was important to her that the scholarship given in her husband’s honor showed Eric that students like him were valued, and that his journey had not gone unnoticed.
I am writing to thank you for generosity for HCZ Endowed scholarship. My plans after graduation is to work for a company in sales and in the advertisement field.
Kayla Fratt ’16, a current WES Scholar from Wisconsin, was enchanted by the Rocky Mountains, which led her to find Colorado College, the type of small liberal arts school she always knew she wanted to attend. Fratt had never heard of the Woman’s Educational Society, but was pleased to receive the generous award for her accomplishments. WES had the ability to not only reduce Fratt’s loans and financial stress, but also offer her a group to trust in for assistance. “WES also is a really great community of supportive women and mentors, which has been a great network of emotional support,” Fratt says. Fratt also appreciates the impact of the book scholarship that WES Scholars receive each semester.
The chapter expanded the Scholarship position to efficiently promote scholastic achievement. We implemented policies like mandatory study hours with our scholarship, one on one meetings with our academic advisor, weekly log-in hours on a google drive sheet for Brothers to document
Gandhi once said to be the change you want to see happening in our world. This quote means be a leader, and be the person who changes the lives of others in the world for the better. Moreover, you should stand up for what you believe in to help change the world, and to keep trying your best to fight for what is right. There were many positive leaders in the world who helped change our society for the better. For example, Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of treasurer was one of these fine people.
My childhood was not most would consider to be easy. Both my mother and father had addiction issues that forced my younger brother and I to care for ourselves. By the time I reached the fifth grade, I had attended five different elementary schools. On the days that I did actually go to school, I was not on time. A few years later, I moved in with my grandparents, and my entire life improved.
My effort and participation have increased, and my commitment to academics has improved. With this sense of scholarship, I can continue into
Everyone is born with some sort of talent which needs to be developed and practiced. The Honors College offers many great opportunities for students to participate in research, community service, and leadership—all of which help us to enhance our interpersonal skills and prepare us for the job market. My particular area of interest is chemistry: I have always been interested in learning how the human body works, about drug design, and chemistry-mediated drug delivery. I was born and raised in Vietnam where traditional medicines of using herbals, and plant sources for health treatment is practiced widely. I always want to get a chance to do research on medicinal plants to ascertain its efficacy for diseases, and apply into modern medicines or natural health care products.
It is incredibly humbling and exciting to receive not only this award, but also the recognition that follows. This scholarship is something that will not only help me pay for my education but will be a direct influence in my success as a student and a Sigma Chi. As a recipient of this award, I thank the Sigma Chi Foundation and my own brothers for aiding me in my journey for academic excellence and the embodiment of the seven virtues which we all follow. Thank you
Being a great leader is not dependent on what you have accomplished yourself, it is shown by how you have impacted others' lives. I have come through a never-ending process of education, self-study, and social interactions to become a true leader figure. Being academically successful has been a big priority of mine. I have proved my academic dedication through my 4.0 GPA which is the first step to complete to grow as a bigger leader in the National Honors Society. My whole life, I have challenged myself by taking more advanced classes such as AP courses because I thought being intelligent is one of the keys to helping me become a bigger leader.
There are many different things that can impact students in their high school years. Whether these things are friends, activities, or the sports they participate in they all impact the student. Many opportunities are presented to students in high school, although not many impacts the student beyond high school, I believe this opportunity will impact me forever. I would love to be a part of the Early College Program this coming spring. I believe the program will do nothing but help me grow and strive to be a better student and continue being involved.
There I explored all of the different STEM fields. From the experience I have developed a love for biology and learning how small things affect larger things in the world around me. The next summer I participated in the Summer Science Research
As a community college student (soon to be graduate), I feel that I have gained a new perspective on what personal growth means. Like any student with a passion for a greater future, I believe in taking every experience and opportunity from community college in order to prepare me for the next level in my education. Throughout my two years of receiving hard earned grades and becoming involved in community service projects (through Phi Theta Kappa) I realized the importance of community building and setting goals. I am proud to be the Co-President of Phi Theta Kappa and to have achieved a 3.8 GPA for my last semester. My 3.8 GPA lead me to a well-deserved position on the Deans’ List, and I am positive that Rutgers University will provide me the tools that will lead me to success.
Civil rights leader Gandhi wrote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” What is one way I would change the world? I would become a leader. I would help the United States become great again. I will tell you how.
