Marijuana has been used for medical purposes for thousands of years to treat the general public with illnesses that are uncontrollably painful. However, society often stereotypes marijuana as an addictive drug that only hooligans use to get high and cause problems, yet other drugs and beverages that are far more dangerous are legal. The United States is a place where industries answer to the wants and needs of their customers. Beverages like alcohol are addictive and damaging and don’t have good traces, yet the American populous unknowingly keeps this dangerous narcotic legal. However, as soon as people hear the word marijuana, they act as if it is a terrifying drug. The introduction of marijuana caused havoc, which soon resulted in its prohibition. Cannabis within the years has been proven to not be an addictive drug, which is one reason it should be legalized for the public to use for …show more content…
Legalizing marijuana for medical purposes is the best solution for patients with illnesses that consist of chronic pain, seizures and scoliosis. Marijuana is natural, although it does have chemicals like THC and CBD, it does not harm one’s body like prescribed medications. Why not use a safe medication like marijuana to release pain rather than medicine that could potentially kill you slowly like morphine and other drugs? Marijuana is a natural plant that has many substances in it that help the human body with problems like eating, sleeping, and can even help with nausea on patients that have been in chemotherapy. Cannabis should be used as medicine rather than products such as morphine or other symptomatic drugs on cancerous or tumorous patients. Other Problematic drugs can only cause more harm rather than good: with the chemicals they carry bringing upon long term damage to the critically ill
In the past decade, a number of movements to legalize the use of marijuana has been gaining momentum. According to the 2016 Gallup survey, a record high 60% of Americans say that marijuana should be legalized and this figure marks a 9% increase compared to 2014. Support for legalizing marijuana was 31% in 2000, 50% in 2016 before reaching 60% last year. This shows that despite government efforts to eliminate its use, marijuana is becoming more popular. It is clear that
Everyday patients are visiting their doctors in a desperate search for help with their problems, some physical and some psychological. Far too often in today’s troubled society a doctor is quick to hand their patient a prescription for a powerful and potentially harmful substance. The prescriptions could include drugs such as benzodiazepines for psychological problems and epilepsy, or opioids for pain. Both of those substances can have substantially dangerous and adverse effects and could lead to addiction and even death. Marijuana is a much safer and more naturally occurring substance that can be used for all of the previously listed purposes.
For many years research has been done, testing the use of medical marijuana and seeing if it really helps and is really worth it. So far 14 states, including New Mexico have legalized marijuana for medical use. The reason marijuana is still illegal in many states is because even though state laws allow it for medical use, federal law still classifies it as a “schedule I drug” (Hoffman & Weber, 2010). Also there has been no medical use accepted by the FDA.
Legalize Marijuana Marijuana is a drug with plenty of benefits and by being illegal it affects me personally, the communities’ economy, and most importantly the suffering patients that need stronger and better medicine to relieve whatever issue they may have. Just because some may not understand or need all the benefits legalizing marijuana could bring, does not mean they should ruin the opportunity for those who do. Marijuana could improve the state’s and local counties’ economy. The Huffington Post says “WPTV reports indicate that legalization of marijuana in Washington could bring an estimated 500 million dollars in tax revenue to the state”. If Texas could make that alone in tax revenue it will be a major help to our whole economy.
Over the past ten years the topic of marijuana legalization has been very controversial and people have had very strong opinions about it. In the early 1900’s marijuana actually became associated with immigrants, turning people away from the substance because they thought it was “dirty”. During the Great Depression people began associating immigrants with crimes and violence, therefore associating marijuana with crimes and violence (PBS). However, in todays’ society many people believe that the drug could be beneficial for treating cancer, anxiety, and chronic pain. Some even think that recreational marijuana should be legalized.
For many people, marijuana is the only treatment that can give them relief from the diseases that have a strong grip on their life, so why should we deny them access to the salubrious drug that could give them good health and the opportunity to actually live life to the fullest? In February of 2014, a poll showed that 49% of Texans supported recreational marijuana and 77% supported medical marijuana (“Legalization of Marijuana”). Marijuana has so many health benefits, it is hard to see why someone might be against it. To top that, it has the potential to bring in millions of tax dollars. Taxing the drug would be a simple way to bring in money and abolish our countries debt, so unless our government enjoys owing trillions of dollars to other countries, they should get their act together.
First, a greater amount of research needs to be obtained to ensure the safety and effectiveness of cannabis for a specific condition. Currently our knowledge of how cannabis affects the body and its impact on certain disease is extremely limited. Until sufficient knowledge of the effects of marijuana are known it can not be safely legalized. Following this, a strict set of regulations needs to be established for what marijuana can be used to treat and who can use it. Marijuana should only be used in cases where the rewards out weigh the risk, such as in cancer and epilepsy.
In the eyes of many Marijuana is seen as corruption in the United States. Marijuana used as a source of product has caused more crimes to be commited and as well put many lives in control of marijuana and even those trying to stop it at risk. What the United States has done was they had marijjuan illegal, but that has only delayed the inevitable. If the situation does not be corrected than more crimes will be commited and as well put many lives in control of marijuana and even those trying to stop it at risk. In order to solve this situation, the best course of action for the United States to make is legalize the cultivation, sale, distribution and use of marijuana.
There is a rise in popularity of recreational marijuana throughout the United States and this remains a controversial issue because of the conflicting laws between states and the federal government. For example, federally recreational marijuana is strictly illegal, but in Washington it perfectly legal if you are 21 or older. Historically, marijuana has been characterized to of the same “evil” as cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, and other hard drugs. This over time has become a view that very few still agree with. I believe marijuana should not be legalized for recreational use, both statewide and federally because this could lead to a health and social crisis, due to lack of accurate knowledge surrounding marijuana.
Alcohol has been proven that it is more dangerous than marijuana, there have been lots of accidents due to drunk driving and there haven’t really been any accidents with people smoking pot while driving. A study in 2009 by U.S. Department of Health and Human Studies published that 69.7 million Americans are current users of tobacco products, 15 million Americans abuse alcohol, and only 4.2 million Americans abuse Marijuana. “1,000 people every day die from smoking-related illnesses, 550 die from alcohol-related accidents and diseases, and less than 20 dies of drug-related causes” (marijuanaToday.com). This proves that alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous than marijuana but yet they are legal and marijuana is not. Marijuana has been here since the 1800s and it was legalized at some point back then but for some reason, it became illegal, what’s wrong with it being legalized just how it was back then.
Also many patients have reported that the usual prescribed pain medications given to them by their doctors do little to almost nothing to help take away their pain. So for many people, marijuana is one of the only things able to give them relief from the pain caused by their illnesses, and the fact that this drug is so far out of reach to suffering patients is wrong. One of the biggest advantages of medical marijuana is that it is all natural, and all the chemicals in it are naturally produced by growing the plant and extracting the chemicals from
The state, the government or the citizens? This debate over the legalization of Marijuana is one of the most discussed and recent topic in all American communities. Cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, is a drug that is made from a plant named cannabis, which is heavily addictive and also useful for medicinal purposes. This problem is crucial because there are two sides to the story.
In counter to this argument I believe that we should not legalize it and subject these poor ill patients to the symptoms and effects of marijuana. In the book Medical Marijuana by Margaret Haerens the book states that “The federal government should not get in the way of patients who use marijuana to alleviate pain and suffering from a number of medical conditions” (Haerens 21). The main point of view of this argument is to argue that marijuana is needed by patients thus justifying the need for medical marijuana. In the same book it says that medical marijuana is found to alleviate the pain to various symptoms such as the nausea associated with chemotherapy. In an article by the New Howard
The hops for the people that smoke weed is that it will make them feel better and help them in their life. The main reasons for its illegalization were racist beliefs and false statements. It has been used as a medicine since an ancient asian dynasty used it. “They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated.
And this is not guaranteeing that if you smoke that much that you will get hurt, this number is just for fatality. So you have to smoke a lot to hurt yourself, or people around you. With that being said, marijuana should be legal because, it is not causing major injuries if you are only smoking it every now and then. Studies have proven that marijuana is far safer than alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. It has also been found that marijuana is less likely to kill u. Researchers say, marijuana is illegal because it was overestimated in the past.
