It saves money. It saves lives. It’s illegal. Why? We don’t know the exact reason. Most people say marijuana is harmful. According to an article on Time.com, “A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that marijuana causes heart attacks and diseases in the arteries, even among the young. A 2014 study found that marijuana use during pregnancy can impede development of the baby's brain. All that on top of a mountain of scary data reported not by some conservative group, but by the Obama Administration.” But the negatives don’t outweigh the positives. It will save the government billions. It’s a much-debated topic, but because it’s pointless to criminalize, will save money, and it has legitimate medical effects, marijuana should be legalized. …show more content…

United States drug laws have not reduced drug use. According to an article on the CNN website, “The U.S. is the No. 1 nation in the world in illegal drug use.” It’s said to be addictive, but it’s actually less addictive than caffeine. It’s not a gateway drug. It is just dealers persistently persuading buyers to try harder drugs because they know marijuana isn’t addictive. Besides that, legalization will save the government money. Most people say because marijuana is illegal, it saves the government money. Well, according to the exact same CNN article, “A Cato study says legalizing drugs would save the U.S. about $41 billion a year in enforcing the drug laws.” Try that on for size! 41 billion American dollars, all by legalizing a plant!
