Organized sports teams have always been a popular activity for young children. Parents and coaches find watching a child bolt in for the winning touchdown or slide into home base engaging, but what parents do not know is the child may think differently. Parents and coaches that pose overcompetitive standards on young sport games have neither a valuable or pleasant affect on children. Some parents are concerned about the negative impact sports can have on young children. Not only can sports have a physically harmful effect on children, but also a psychologically harmful effect. Many young sports teams have become too advanced and only focus on one goal; winning. Sports should be fun, not forced. ADD MORE IDEAS OF WHAT PAPER IS ABOUT The main reason children play sports is to have fun, but some parents tend to push their child too far. In 2006, the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association polled young players about the behavior they observed at sport games. The results were disappointing. More than a third said they had been yelled at or teased by a fan, fifteen percent said their parents got angry when they played poorly, and four percent said they witnessed out-of-control …show more content…
Parents and coaches are too concentrated on winning that many times very few kids get to participate. Children who develop athletic skills before others are praised while children who are still developing and learning are discouraged from playing. Everyone fears failure, but when a child is constantly observing the game on the bench and not getting an adequate amount of playing time they will lack self-confidence (Ellis). Consequently, many teams lose players that could have had the ability to be a phenomenal athlete if they would have acquired athletic ability and encouragement to continue during their childhood. Winning in sports has become too much of priority, rather than the important aspect of teaching children valuable life
According to the NCAA, only 3.3 percent of high school athletes will play at the Division 1 level and after college, only .05 percent of athletes make it to the professional level. Parents feel that they have invested so much in their child that they expect a rewarding return. The pressure to encourage their child to be successful can be the reason why parents can be aggressive toward their
Should a person get paid just for showing up for there a job and not actually doing anything? Should they also get paid the same amount even if another co-worker is better at their job? Just because someone shows up and participates, doesn’t not mean they deserve the same treatment as everyone else. Some parents and athletes believe equal playing time for all sports and activities is deserved all through their middle school and high school careers. However, earning your position, being undeserving of playing time, and coaches trying to win in their respected program are all issues that need to be thought of before people begin fighting for equal playing time.

Concentrating on winning or losing spoils the fun that games hold. In addition, equal chances should be provided to every child to participate. Competitive nature can assist the children in their life later on, but the focus should be on better mental and physical health. As my brother plays in his tournament for high school basketball I hear my mother screaming at him. She's telling him to try harder, run faster, rebound more, and to have fun. Although it is a tournament and everyone wants the team they are for to win, they also all want those boys to have fun. Sports aren't always about winning. Especially since these boys are still in high school, they're just kids.
Health and contact sports are something parents worry about as over 500 deaths in the past 3 years from contact sports alone are making parents stand out against these sports and if the government doesn 't do anything about it the number of 7% overall contact sports drop will just keep getting lower and lower each time. Dr. William Speight also had this to say “Many other kids have suffered paralyzing spinal injuries”(Pennington). Kids being paralyzed is the fear for many athletes these days and the number f kids getting paralyzed has increases 2% which is equivalent to about 8,000 kids each year which is crazy to think about kids can 't play sports for the rest of thrie and maybe not be able to live their life because of it so next you hear mom or dad i wanna play sports your answer should be a simple NO. Children have strived for years to make their parents, teachers and coaches proud of them. Kids have come to practice Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday to get better, while their academics are suffering. Students have pushed their bodies to the limits, causing extreme injury that will hold them back from sports in the future. Student athletes are not getting the opportunity to play multiple sports during the year, because they are expected to spelize in one sport and focus on it year round, leaving no opportunity to play other sports or do other activities. Youth sports are becoming too intense for young children to keep up with.
Should Children Receive Trophies Just For Participating? What are trophies? They are memorable tokens that symbolize hard work and excellence. They are symbols of winners who worked hard to try and reach their goal.
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).
Children experience more harmful negative impacts, rather than beneficial positive ones, such as being at a constant risk of severe injury, wanting to opt out of sports early, and being under high levels of stress and anxiety. These impacts could lead to children being injured for an extended amount of time, children being inactive and unfit later in life, children dropping out of school, and many other catastrophic circumstances that children should not have to put up with. The opposing side suggests that children who participate in competitive sports experience positive impacts, such as staying healthy and in shape, and having positive psychological benefits. In some instances, these impacts may be true, however families with a child athlete opted for fast food, ready-made meals more than those of families who did not have a child athlete. Also, while competitive sports provide some psychological benefits, it has also been proven that they can cause stress, anxiety, and ultimately, attrition for the young athlete.
Summary In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky tries to demonstrate the negative effect of organized sports on the physical and psychological health of growing child. She claims that the games are not festive but they end up in the wrong development of a child’s brain. The coaches and parents have high hopes for their children that result in the pressure building. This changes the purpose of sports from teaching tolerance, teamwork and sportsmanship to merely winning by all means.
Some of the Mental and Physical impacts towards our youth include children playing in fear, In 2017 the book Trophy Son was written by tennis player, Anton Stratis, “Anton’s dad is a former Olympic swimmer and retired millionaire who focuses all his energy on Anton. In one part of the book, Anton’s dad refuses to let him drink water on a hot day while he hits hundreds of balls on the family’s private court” (Cohn). This father put so much pressure on this child to follow his Olympic glory although the money wasn't an issue to him the pride was, which resulted in a child going through unsafe practices. This issue causes children to lose interest and joy in playing sports knowing their parents are going to interfere. If nothing changes children could get into a place of fear regarding the parent or even
When kids do contact sports they become more aggressive with other kids because they think the other kids can take a hit too. These kids trying to tackle them can therefore hurt the other kids and cause more harm to the kids. This is a valid point but, contact sports give kids an outlet for energy and it helps kids deal with their emotions. If a kid gets really emotional out on the mat or field then they will have to be able to control their emotions or they probably won't be able to perform as well as they could do. Being able to control your emotions is a big part of sports and how you perform.
“In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year” claims Stanford Children’s Health. It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.
Kids need competition, but not to much. When more pressure is put on from coaches during a game it makes the game two times more competitive. During game action coaches have the most influence on
