Post-occupation Boston was different to today’s cities in a multitude of ways. Many differences were due to the time period but some were specific to Boston’s political and geographic landscapes. Like other recovering cities between 1775 and 1880 Boston had to deal with issues regarding; sanitation, congestion, and regulation. Over time many of these issues have been fixed as local and central government became more established. Established in 1630, Boston was one of the earlier settlements in Colonial North America. It was founded by the Massachusetts Bay Colony whose Puritan traditions influenced the local government. Annual town meetings were attended by a sizeable portion of inhabitants before and after the siege (Carr, page 88). These meetings helped Boston recover, grow, and adapt. Accessibility to the city was particularly difficult before bridges were built. The isthmus connecting the peninsula to the mainland was one “mile-long, …show more content…
Selectmen were elected town officials that helped enforce regulations meant to improve the safety of the town. They also screened adults wanting to adopt any orphans to ensure the child’s future wellbeing (Carr, page 98). Constables were also elected during town meetings. However, many elected constables were working men and could not volunteer as much as the position required so they would decline the job. This was so common that “In March 1781, not one of the twelve constables elected to office accepted”. (Carr, page 90) Today law enforcement is not an elected, volunteer position so retention rates are much better. Early Boston faced many problems during its establishment that no longer exist today. These differences in accessibility, sanitation, congestion, and regulations were solved through the creation of laws and regulations that are enforced by stronger local and national
Zac Nyland January, 20, 2017 Boston, MA and Anglo Saxon city with a population of 115,000 people was run by descendants of English Puritans. Back then it was hard trying to immigrate into America and hard finding jobs. Immigrate is where you come from one country to another. It wasn’t worth immigrating/coming to America. It was hard finding jobs because the American people thought that the immigrants would take over their job.
This initial attack on his home was not a complete plundering, the mob broke windows and in a failed attempt to find him, the mob went on their way, dispersing on their own around mid-night. Governor Francis Bernard, in a letter to The Lords of Trade, explains how directly after this first riot Mr. Oliver made the decision to resign from his post as stamp distributer (Francis Bernard, P.
Notably, the police offices were now headed by police boss who were designated by political pioneers. While regardless it remained imperfect, this "new" strategy for policing all the more nearly takes after a current police force. • The law requirement under Homeland Security
The primary intention of the Massachusetts Bay was to make business but was also used by the Puritans as a refuge. In 1630, 11 ships arrived to Massachusetts with about 1,000 settlers who founded Boston and seven towns close by. Then in 1635, English government intended to invalidate the charter, but the colony decided not to return it. After many interruptions and requests along with the political and religion conflicts with in England, the charter was at last revoked, after 50 years of self-government, in June 1684. Once again “Salutary Neglect” became an informal policy of English
In the late 1600’s, many European settlers arrived in North America in hopes of escaping the hardships they faced back home. America initially promised colonists the wealth, religious freedom, and escape from oppression they desired. New England was home to dense forests, and hills which was not optimal for crop growth. Therefore, the colonists directed their attention towards trade and commerce. The people in this region were devoutly religious and believed in the education of children.
Although all the colonists all came from England, the community development, purpose, and societal make-up caused a distinct difference between two distinct societies in New England and the Chesapeake region. The distinctions were obvious, whether it be the volume of religious drive, the need or lack of community, families versus single settlers, the decision on minimal wage, whether or not articles of agreements were drawn for and titles as well as other social matters were drawn, as well as where loyalties lay in leaders. New England was, overall, more religious than the Chesapeake region. Settlers in New England were searching relief for religious persecution in Europe. Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics were coming in droves to America searching for an opportunity to have religious freedom.
The Massachusetts Bay Colony was estimated to have a population of 506 in the 1630s. The population then grew quickly, probably because Boston was a popular port city. The population grew to 55,941 between 1630 and 1700. Most of the immigrants that migrated to Massachusetts were from England. The majority of these immigrants were Puritans and their religion meant a lot to them.
New England was a colony that was settled because the people that came from England wanted to find their freedom from their country. The people that came to the United States was to find freedom through religion, which the people from Mother England were not given the freedom to pursue their religious believes. The first settlement in New England was when John Winthrop came to the United States. In this settlement came the founders of the colony of New England. Basically the people from the first settlement were the ones that set up the way that the people were going to live and the type of government that they were going to establish and follow.
Many tribes were sacrificed as part of the political development of the colony. Eventually, organizing theocratic form of government that enforced moral conformity profoundly influenced New England’s political
Boston Massacre is a beautiful place to live. But there was something changed! The people changed, the rules changed and everything seems different. And I knew that there is something would happen to Boston. And you can see the people are tension or nervous and some of them were upset and sad.
John Winthrop, a non-separating Puritan, was a leading figure in the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony that described the goal of this colony in his City Upon a Hill speech in which he says, “We must consider that we shall be as a city
William Braford was governor from 1622-1656, except for five years. The economy of Plymouth was primarily agricultural. Massachusetts Bay was made up of Puritans, and led by John Winthrop. John Winthrop was trained as a lawyer, so his writing style was straightforward, and he recorded events in their entirety with great accuracy. The economy was based on fur trading, fishing, and shipbuilding.
Church attendance was mandatory, and people were forced to be Puritan. There was zero religious tolerance in the community. Political System: Massachusetts originally had a governing body called the General Court which was assembled by the original joint-stock company. This was eventually altered into a legislature for the established colony and gradually became a 2 house legislature. Voters were adult male church going property owners within the
Lastly, Vrabel asserts that Boston’s mayors “cultivated ethnic and class conflicts” (6), which undermined development in Boston. Ultimately, these factors spurred Bostonians to action to change Boston. On November 8, 1949, Boston elected a new mayor, John Hynes. He saw the damage the previous mayor had done in alienating businesses from settling in Boston and worked for change. Hynes did so by “streamlining city government and reducing the waste and corruption” (8).
The Boston Massacre was a street fight that occurred on March 5, 1770, between a “patriot”. They were throwing sticks, snowballs, and trash at a group of British troops. The loyalists got very annoyed with the patriots so they shot into the mob killing five. The riot began when around 50 colonists attacked a British sentinel. A British officer called in for additional troops
