President Franklin D Roosevelt Rhetorical Devices

Part of this ricochet was FDR’s Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation. This speech was played to millions due to radios recently being readily available to the public and because of this, FDR’s speech would have a substantial impact on the events following Pearl Harbor. As a result of the crisis, FDR’s speech was made. Even though the speech contains some fallacies it remains effective in its use of rhetorical appeals, logos, pathos, and ethos to influence the audience.

Throughout his speech, Franklin Delano Roosevelt utilizes powerful rhetorical devices to draw his audience in. The quote that united the audience with both Roosevelt and each other, however, contained a combination of pathos, anaphora, and most importantly he uses personal pronouns to pull the crowd together as one. As he begins to draw his speech to a close, Roosevelt states, “our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger” (par. 16). With his use of both personal pronouns and the description of “grave danger”, Roosevelt pushes for an emotional response from his audience. This pathos appeal is important in two aspects; the context of the war and the importance of unison.

January 28, 1986, is when the space shuttle Challenger took flight with seven astronauts aboard and America observing, while the shuttle exploded in air. All astronauts die from the tragedy with their loved ones watching. President Ronald Reagan is in the White House ready to fulfill duties as the President of the United States of America. In his role as president he changes his plans to address the tragedy of the Challenger shuttle and respond to America’s anguish. President Reagan speaks to his audience, the citizens of America, to bring assurance through his speech.

Theodore Roosevelt uses logos throughout his speech. He uses it to show that he knows what he is doing and using his intelligence to convey that he is the right person to lead the United States. When he says, “Upon the success of our experiment much depends, not only as regards our own welfare, but as regards the welfare of mankind,” it makes us think and feel that he knows what he is talking about, reassuring why he will be a good president. His logos is also shown when he talks about the Republic of the days with Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Bringing this into the speech shows that he knows his history on the US and knows that they did great things for the country, showing that he will also do great things.

Franklin Roosevelt uses pathos, ethos and logos all throughout his speech. “December 7th 1941- A date that will live in infamy.” This quote will forever be in the minds of Americans. The bombing of the Pearl Harbor is an event no one can forget and neither is Franklin Roosevelt’s speech. It was this that brought American into World War Two and changed history.

In President Bush’s address to the nation, he uses many rhetorical devices. A rhetorical device is a literary device that is used to persuade the audience to support the argument made. Bush’s address uses Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. They were invented and studied by the famous greek philosopher Aristotle. Ethos appeals to credibility, Logos appeals to logic or reason, and Pathos appeals to the audience’s feelings.

In President Roosevelt’s speech, there are multiple rhetorical devices that can get a point across. Using these rhetorical devices, the audience may be able to become swayed by the main message being expressed. The goal of a speech is to catch the audience’s attention greatly and persuade them to gain similar beliefs on whatever is being spoken of. In Roosevelt’s speech, the mood expresses a ray of hope yet a feel of strictness. One rhetorical device used by Roosevelt is personification.

In the 1960’s during the era of the Civil Rights movement, America had been divided by the voting rights that were not given to the African Americans. Although, a decade ago the African Americans had been freed from slavery, but they were still not considered “equal” because they weren't able to vote. The discrimination in the area even had political leaders affected, therefore many of those political leaders during that time attempted to put an end to the several agonizing events going on. Lyndon B Johnson, a white persistent president speaks out to the lawmakers using compassionate encouraging appeals about voting for Civil Rights, in order to unify the nation “to build a new community”. President Johnson utilizes many devices in his speech such as anaphora, emotional appeals, and

December 7th, 1941 is a day changed the lives of all Americans. It is the day Japan deliberately attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii killing many U.S. soldiers and destroying a lot of the U.S. naval fleet. This day which turned the tide of World War II, up until this point the U.S. had not chosen to intervene in the conflict overseas, but Japan’s attack had given the U.S. a reason to enter the fight. Roosevelt effectively appeals to the emotions of the U.S. population by establishing trust with his audience through the use of emotional diction, and repetition which allow him to rally support for the war effort.

Multiple presidents throughout history have presented their Inaugural speeches, but not all have been as influential as a speech presented with complete thought and various rhetorical devices. An inaugural speech or inaugural address is the first speech made by a President at a ceremony; this ceremony is called an Inauguration. In Ronald Reagan's inaugural speech, which was held on January 20th of 1981, he presents many Rhetorical Devices in which engage both to the audience's emotions and provide information throughout his whole speech. Ronald Reagan used many rhetorical devices and got his point across to the people which made his inaugural address nothing short of excellent. The first Rhetorical Device Ronald Reagan used in his Inaugural speech was the use of Pathos.

In the month of April in 1906, the realization that the nation was growing faster than the government was all to real (okayfey). Monopoles were influencing Americans negatively and the federal and State powers could do nothing about it. The rich had control of almost all the wealth in the United States, and the middle class was not happy about it. They were in a cage match that was only going to end in bloodshed and an unsettled dispute. That being said, President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was left between all of this to be the intermediary.

Franklin spoke of the incident of the attack on Pearl Harbor the day after it occurred. Mr. Roosevelt was stern and concise. He spoke on the occasion of tragedy to inform the House and the American people what the Japanese have done.
