By doing this it allowed the government to have more say by choosing which man or women they wanted representing them, Not just was this a successful political move by the progressives was the institution of city commissions, this is where only part of the five seats were elected and the others appointed due to the power of political machines. During the progressive era political parties controlled everything about the social system and could easily dominate the other party by forming political machines. The parties recruited members by offering them jobs, money, and favors. They also provided social services, hosted community events, and gave food to the needy, all in exchange for votes. During the time of reform the two main views on government were the progressive party and the populist movement. The populist movement was supported mainly by farmers in the south and west, they wanted local stores built, more railroads, and more telegraph lines.
The roles and ideas of the populist movement and progressives during the era of reform were to get reforms and other important things passed and to free corruption. This brought changes to political, economical, and brought social benefits. Progressives included both women and men from different ethnic groups and social classes. A lot of people believed that Industrialization and urbanization brought a lot of bad problems, including horrible treatment of the workers, which as we all know many people didn't like but not many people did something about it. Progressivism appealed lower class, middle class and upper class.
Some of these issues were remove the corruption and undue influence, include more people within the political process, a conviction that the government must play a pivotal role to fix social problems and economic factors. The progressivist movement began as a social movement but began to push more into the political sector. The problems that this era faced such as poverty, greed or racism could be combated by providing a good education a good and efficient workplace, and a safe environment. This social group were mainly college educated and lived mainly within the city limits and identified that the government could be used as a tool in order to push their agenda. Freedom redefined as the fulfillment of human capabilities.
The progressive reformers were mostly middle class families during the early 19 hundreds. These reformers believed that every kid had the right to childhood so that they could develop into well rounded functioning adults. The middle class focused mostly on the poor who tended to be immigrants whose kids did not get to live in ideal situations. During this time the middle class had less kids which gave the kids more space in a figurative and literal sense and allowed them to have more resources from their parents and more time to pursue their interests. The poor classes did not have less kids, and they were forced to live in small apartments that were crowded and had poor air ventilation and septic system that lead to an increase in disease.

The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.
In the 1900s, the Populist movement and the Progressive movement were mass movements provoked by the wide gap between the rich and the poor in America. Both movements were organized during industrialization and urbanization, but their origins and plans differed. The Progressive side had a kinder approach towards their long list of goals for social change; this resulted with more successful achievements of their goals, unlike the more radical Populist movement. The Populist movement was more radical in the way they planned to execute their objectives. Consisting mostly of farmers from the Midwest, they viewed monopoly and industrialization as competition for their agricultural trade and based their movement to counter its effects.
The progressive movement encompassed a variety of different ideas and activities of reformist pressure groups, that called for political reforms attacking bribery and corruption. Progressive reformers were sought to eliminate social reform issues which included poor working conditions, female suffrage, and child labor. They were also sought to delegate power away from the political institutions by entrusting some legislative power to commissions. It is from the initiative and referendum process that placed legislation or constitutional amendments directly before the voters. The initiative did this by circumventing the legislature, relying instead on a petition process to force a vote on a particular issue either in the legislature or by the general process.
3. The American people began to embrace the role of government during the progressive era to address poverty, poor health, violence, greed, racism, and class warfare.
