Pros And Cons Of Defunding Planned Parenthood

One of the most effective and crucial programs for women’s health is currently under attack by the so-called president of the United States, Donald Trump. In an attempt to convince the people that he is willing to stand up for everyone, including the unborn, but instead, Mr. Trump is oppressing women and taking away their rights as human beings. Without Planned Parenthood, 2.5 million men and women would be left without affordable, high-quality health care. One in five women have visited a Planned Parenthood in their lifetime. The fact that all of the care and help Planned Parenthood gives can all be lost due to something as petty as abortion services is almost laughable.

Planned Parenthood is more than just an abortion clinic When people think of Planned Parenthood, their mind goes straight to abortion. Americans believe that all Planned Parenthood does is perform abortions, which is a very flawed misconception. The non-profit organization does a lot more than that, they promote safe sex, prevent unplanned pregnancies, provide preventive care and screening for cervical and other cancers. I think that it’s important that we continue funding Planned Parenthood because without it women in America will be left without important resources.

It is vital that Congress change course so that these, as well as similar programs, be expanded. In particular, we need to protect federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides important preventive services for women such as mammograms and conception. In Maryland, more than 40,000 people rely on Planned Parenthood for health care every year and thousands of Maryland students receive an accurate and complete education about reproductive health from Planned Parenthood educators.4 The recent attacks on Planned Parenthood show just how far some will go to prevent women from taking control of their health and well-being. In Congress, I will fight against Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, and I will never let the government come between a woman and her doctor.

The goal is to defund Planned Parenthood for a year which means tax payers would stop paying. Which when simplified does not sound that that would affect that many women, but around 15.6 million women are under Medicaid coverage. And not only does it affect women as a whole, but it especially affects lower socioeconomic women and women of color. Planned Parenthood gave statistics that around 29% of black, 25% hispanic, 15% white, and 12% asian women are affected by the Hyde Amendment.

For years republicans have been trying to defund Planned Parenthood, and at this moment in history, they are closer towards their goal than ever. With a republican majority senate, and a republican as president, the fight to defund Planned Parenthood only faces minimal resistance. Republicans, more specifically the Trump Administration, like to hide behind their religious beliefs and values when it comes to their ideas regarding Planned Parenthood. They tend to only focus aspects that they disagree with while paying no mind to the good that Planned Parenthood does. These republicans that are working to defund Planned Parenthood and oppose Planned Parenthood so strongly tend to only focus on the belief that defunding Planned Parenthood would

Without Planned Parenthood, women who are uninsured or have a low income would have nowhere to go to get these necessary tests done. There are split views on whether it should be funded by government or not, not to mention the underlying moral dilemma when it comes to abortions. In essence, Planned Parenthood was funded $500,000 in 2014. Though they are not prohibited to use federal funding on abortions, but Planned Parenthood conducts around 300,000 abortions a year using other funding. Recently, an anti-abortion group conducted an undercover interview and discovered that Planned Parenthood uses fetal tissue for scientific research, which is against the law.

Despite this information, there is a lot more to abortion than the opinion of it being “right” or “wrong”. According to “Students for life” who are pro life, about 1 million abortions are executed each year in the US. That data adds up to 22% of pregnancies ending in abortion.
