Race Relations in Texas History Texas has long been regarded as The Lone Star State, and throughout its history, attracted many different cultures and ethnicities to call it home. Some migrated to the land for gold, other to escape religious persecution in European countries. From the early contact with Native Americans to the discrimination of illegal immigrants in present day, the history of Texas teems with examples of issues of races relations.
Texas’ long battle with racism began with the discovery of the Mexico and Texas area in the 1500s by the Spanish. Motivated by the fabled riches and cities of gold to be found in the new world, these men, known as conquistadors, began a journey into unknown territory, and with them, brought immense

The Crown of Spain continued his control of New Spain, but ceased the sending of new settlers to the territory. A new cultural group emerged during this time, called the Tejanos, Mexicans living in Texas. The Tejanos face some of the same discrimination today as they did in the 18th and 19th centuries, because they were neither fully Mexican or fully Texan. This became a major issue after the Texas revolution from Mexico, as many viewed the Tejanos as loyal to the Mexican side and disloyal to Texas. Additionally, during this period of establishing the new territory, many began to assimilate with the Native Americans (and some African Americans residing in the territory). This created new social and class structures as “Spanishness” began to determine wealth and prosperity. Tejanos and Mestizos found themselves at the lower end of this class structure. The Tejanos would continue to struggle to survive as farmers and …show more content…
Therefore, slave trade thrived in the colonies. Many Anglos argued that slavery greatly improved the economic status of the colonies and most Mexican officials, never mind their opposition and knowledge of the institution, allowed slave labor to happen. Additionally, many plantation owners wished to mimic the slave trade industry in the United States and treated Africans as assets. Many slaves attempted escape and, if successful, fled to live with Indian tribes or live within Mexican colonies. Furthermore, during this time of Mexican rule, Native American tribes fought to keep their independence and continued to fight with Anglos and Tejanos over land rights. Many of the tribes attempted to survive alongside the colonists by trading and
Spanish Colonial era in Texas started with a system with missions and presidios. They were designed gain control over the locality and to establish Christianity. This era dealt with Spanish efforts to bring Texas under Spanish authority and maintain if from the establishments of the first missions in Texas. It also includes the attempts of others to challenge Spanish authority over the region. First, an era is an long and distinct period of history with a particular feature.
The first reason why the United States were unsympathetic to the rights of Mexican laws was by breaking the laws. Texas is far away from the Mexico central government which was located in Mexico City. Since Texas far away they were monitored differently. The first law the American settlers broke was bringing slaves with them. In Mexico slavery was abolished in 1824.
In chapter four, Menchaca discussed how the Spanish during the late seventh century colonized Texas and Arizona to increase their power and control over the Southwest. The Spanish sent their military powers and church friars to set up forts and missions to control the large vast areas of land. Menchaca discussed the history of Texas 's founding and how it came into the possession of the Spanish. The Spanish wanted to settle in Texas because of possible threats of from the French invading their settled land. They set up missions as a way to protect their new conquered land.
Texas was given its toponym from the word “Tejas”, meaning “friends” or “allies”. The place name indicates that a confederacy of multiple Southeastern Native American tribes, called the Caddo Nation, were the first to settle in Texas, since the word “Tejas” derives from the Caddo language. Texas borders Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Texas’s proximity to Louisiana allows access to the Port of South Louisiana, New Orleans, Shreveport and Baton Rouge. The Port of South Louisiana is the 4th biggest volume shipping port in the world and the largest bulk cargo port in the world and the three cities have a thriving film industry.
In comparison to most of the State, people from East Texas voted for those politicians, whose ideas and promoting campaigns were the most discriminating and conservative. Such a difference is based on the fact that there were some tensions between the local politicians and country’s government. Mostly, Texas had a two-party system, which aimed to establish a balance between opinions on different subjects, including segregation. The eastern part of Texas, on the other hand, was more homogenous, meaning that all local politicians shared the interests of one dominating group of people. These politicians were segregationists because they had segregation promoting campaigns and their own well-being depended on this issue a lot.
Texas was a natural target for western expansion due to several reasons. Its proximity to the settled Southwest and the fact that mountains did not buffer it made it favourable (Billington, Ray, & Martin, 2001). Following the expansion, code that would regulate the people 's behaviour was necessary. Various scholars have tried to dictate the fact that there was no code. However, there existed unwritten rules that were centred on fair play, loyalty, and respect for the land.
Latinos were already living in Texas, mostly all Texans had Mexican origins, had various obstacles that limited them from voting in the state throughout the 19th century. For the most part African Americans entered the state as slaves, were second class citizens and the Texas political system was eventually opened up to them. Asians are much smaller groups that origin from China, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, and etc. About 1 million Asians migrated to Texas.
Also, the Texas History textbook made the Mexican Americans seem like the rival to the White Americans; its racial appeal to Mexican Americans, as a result, the students took the information in the textbook and blamed it on the Mexican American students, making them feel like outsiders. Even today, the Anglo memory alienates the Mexican Americans; this alienation of Mexican American students happens every year in the seventh grade Texas History classes. Today, some White Americans still think racially against Mexican Americans, saying they don’t belong in Texas. Mexican American students find these comments offensive, it makes them feel neglected among their classmates. Seventh grade White Americans should not make fun of or blame the Mexican American students because of what the textbook says that their ancestors did; they should not be held accountable for what happened in the past.
Discrimination Laws for the State of Texas Texas Labor Code Anti-Discrimination Provisions Texas has its own laws for employment discrimination but employers who abide by the federal statute will be safe under the Texas state law as well. The reason for this is that the Texas Labor Code Anti-Discrimination Provisions are parallel with the Federal Discrimination guidelines. However, there is a trend throughout cities and counties with America that allow these local municipalities to have their own ordinances. In Texas, local government can and sometimes do establish their own anti-discrimination rules. In the city of Austin, several city ordinances make it unlawful to deny access to public accommodation or discriminate in employment on the basis
El Paso is an example of strong Cristero supporters who, unlike San Antonio, El Paso did not center their pro-Cristero activities on diplomacy; the support was more radical. Probably because El Paso borders Mexico and they were more likely to come in contact with Mexican Cristero; they helped out the Cristeros by smuggling weapons and providing refuge if needed. Their was even a case in El Paso were a Cristero supporter by he name of José Gándara attempted to start a Cristero Rebellion in the United States. It failed when the U.S Department of Justice caught wind of what Gándara was planning and crushed it before it got any more support. Furthermore the pro-Cristero Rebellion movement did not just reach Texas it also had a strong support
Immigration in Texas has affected the political subculture of the state in the south. The new immigrants adapt to the old political subculture and because they are not legal residents of the state they cannot participate in political culture that can change the way they live specially in the southern parts of Texas like Hidalgo county, Texas where they have highest poverty rate in the nation with forty percent of the residents enroll in the food stamp program. In Texas colonias are unregulated settlements, they are considered rural subdivisions because they lack infrastructure, sewage, roads, and a water system. It is hard for Texas to make change when they have the largest colonia population in the country.
First, the Spanish and the Navajo got into a conflict, but that put an impact on New Mexico History. It all started when the Navajo moved to where the Pueblo lived. It was easier to adapt to the new environment, because the Pueblo had already lived their for over one thousand years. In the time frame the Pueblo had learned how to farm on dry, rocky, desert land. They knew how to go crops with a small portion of water.
Laws and rules that date back to times when it made it difficult for people to stand out and have a voice. Texas based their laws on family values, school prayer, against abortion, and against gay marriage. Another negative aspect of Texas its location next to Mexico. Since Texas is bordering Mexico, there has been a lot of illegal Mexican immigrants crossing the border unto Texas seeking jobs that belong to legal Texas citizens. Though has been stricter laws put in place to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over into Texas, there is still dispute over the issue
By introducing these new traditions on to the people of Mexico they slowly gained popularity and brought different people together. For example Spaniards created a different society to protect indigenous people, they slowly started to
Admittedly, Texas has endeavored through difficult times in the past when dealing with other countries about the frontier lines and conflicts about the statehood. After gaining independence from Spain, Texas was admitted into the United States to only later secede from the Union fifteen years later. Although, Texas received much of its rugged fashioned of being an individualistic state from the many subcultures that pertain to the diverse communities around Texas. Subsequently, when viewing Texan’s characteristics, they seem to represent not only an individualistic attitude, but also a traditionalistic sense.
