“Intelligence is closely associated with formal education- the type of schooling a person has, how much and how long- and most people seem to move comfortably from that notion to a belief that work requiring less schooling requires less intelligence” (Rose). What Rose is trying to infer is that just because you are labeled blue collar: meaning you have to earn your income from manual labor, and have lack of educational knowledge, does not mean you cannot earn the knowledge in your work career. In the essay “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff he discusses the difference between “book smarts” and “street smarts” as they pertain to intellectualism (Tannen & Graff:2010 p.198). We are taught that being street smart means to have the knowledge to handle difficult or dangerous situations in life, and that being book smart means that you are well educated academically. Graff explains how schools and colleges may be at fault for not channeling such street smarts into academic work. We do not consider that one of the major reasons why colleges and schools overlook the intellectual potential of street smarts, is the fact we associate street smarts with anti-intellectual concerns. He proceeds to explain how students do not need to read challenging writings to become intellectual themselves.

He believes that street smarts can pave the way to becoming book smart and that schools may be at fault for these students not doing well by “overlooking the opportunity to channel it into good academic work” (1).
Gerald Graff’s essay “Hidden Intellectualism” contemplates the age-old idea that street smarts are anti-intellectual. However, as Graff points out, “schools and colleges are at fault for missing the opportunity to tap into such street smarts and channel them into academic smarts.” (244). What Graff means by this is that being street smart does not mean a person lacks intelligence. Rather, educational institutions need to find a way to effectively ‘tap into’ this different format of intellectualism to produce academic intelligence.

Different authors cited in the reading to show how to accept another’s different intellectual. However, we realize that people who come across as being intellectual weren’t always labeled as that.

The work first appeared on January 11, 1990 in the New York Times as a part of the series “Voices of the New Generation”. The author spoke about the negative attitude the American society has to smart people and demonstrates it with the usage of words like “nerd” or “geek”.

He explains that society tends to associate people who are intelligent on solely being "book smart" and performing well in academics, rather than being street smart. Graff opens up the reading by giving his own personal experience on feeling torn between trying to prove that he was smart yet fearing that he was overdoing it. The rhetorical strategies that are used in the article are ethos, anecdote and analogy. The rhetorical strategy, ethos is used when it states that more than half of a man’s salary growth happens during the first ten years according to a director of the Hallie E. Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families (Selingo 9). This furthers the authors claim because the evidence shows that the article used credible sources in order for the audience to trust the author. Another rhetorical strategy used was anecdote when it the author tells a short story of Stanley Hall and how back in the mid 1800s college students like Stanley had the same problem of finding what they wanted to do after college (Selingo 2). This supports the authors claim by telling a story that would be similar to a student from todays society.
The “gross” jobs are going unloved in this world today. Blue-collar jobs are the same as white-collar jobs. Blue-collar jobs use the same skills. If you work hard at your job you can get anywhere with this job. Pay may be low at your starting point, but as you work harder and longer you could become a millionaire.
In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell uses the persuasive techniques such as figurative language, rhetorical questions, and analogies to persuade readers that the American view of success is wrong, and that success is the product of opportunities, hidden advantages, and hard work. In Chapter Two, these techniques are used to describe his idea of “The 10,000-Hour Rule” - that belief it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at something. Gladwell’s basis for the 10,000-hour rule is that people who are experts in their field became so good from hidden and rare opportunities that allowed them to practice their skills. One example gladwell uses are The Beatles, whom Gladwell identifies as one of the most famous rock bands ever.
