Summary Of Mike Rose's Blue Collar Brilliance

In the article, The World Might be Better Off Without College for Education, written by Bryan Caplan, explains how people do not apply what they learned in college into their actual jobs. He mainly focuses his argument on people who are deciding if they want to go to college or not because he is expressing if going to college is actually worth the money being spent. Through the use of rhetorical strategies like testimony, statistics, exemplification, and authority they help the audience have a clearer understanding of his argument. Throughout the article Caplan uses testimony to prove to high schoolers that a lot of people do not apply what they learn in college to their jobs.

Throughout the essay Bird makes several points to support her overall argument that a person does not need college to succeed. She says that college does not work for everyone and believes a degree is not essential. In “Where College Fails Us,” Caroline Bird invalidly argues that all college graduates find themselves working meaningless jobs and that no one needs a college degree to be successful. First, Bird states that “College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis.” However, this point is flawed because not only does she not give any evidence to support her claim, but it is inaccurate.

In the article it talks about how college does not prepare you for work life but college teaches how to do a specific job. I agree with Harbowski statement because in today’s world of work many companies require you to have a degree, whether it is a bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree. It is true that not all jobs require you to have a degree but, the jobs that do not require a college degree are also the jobs that are more likely to lay those off who do not have a college but do obtain a high school diploma. Others may say that you can make a good living working at job with only a high school diploma. Although, that may be true studies have also shown that you have to work harder than others to get to that comfortable living place and college graduates are much more likely to be employed and earn more than those with a high school diploma.

The authors’ emphasis on “on average” is very effective at showing how their point makes sense and why it should be taken into consideration. I found the way that the authors focused on the minority more than the majority was skillfully effective at showing how some career paths do not require a college education and that the return in investment would not be worth the cost. Throughout their argument I found the writers to mostly use Logos and Ethos in their writing. The Logos is evident by the way they use statistics and the Ethos by how they state telling someone the only way to be successful is to go to college is a disservice. This is effective at making the reader think about how this should affect the decision of going to college and whether they should push someone to go to

To conclude this analyzation of Mike Rose’s essay “Blue Collar Brilliance” and Gerald Graff’s essay “Hidden Intellectualism”, Mike Rose’s essay was more effective. He gave readers examples of real life scenarios to validate his point. He used rhetorical tools that would help the more academic successful audience. He also connected with the audience labeled as “Blue Collars”, with stories from his mother and uncle

Zachari Whipkey Professor Brandon Clay ENG141_03 Rhetoric & Intro Research Writing September 8, 2016 “Blue Collar Brilliance” by Mark Rose indicates the view that intelligence cannot be measured by the amount of schooling a person has completed. He describes that blue-collar jobs require more intelligence and skill than what people may think. He describes his experiences growing up seeing his mother as a waitress in coffee shops and restaurants. He portrays his mother as a dedicated and loyal woman who loved her job and put her heart and soul into her job as a waitress.

In his essay, "College isn't for Everyone. Let's Stop Pretending It Is," Michael Petrilli uses the title of his article to clearly state the opinion that college is simply not for everyone. He supports this opinion on the statistically low college graduation rate of lower income students. He links this low rate of graduation to poor performance in high school, which leaves students unready for college upon completion of twelfth grade. On the job technical training is presented as a viable alternative to college, where a skill can be obtained to provide a career.

He discusses two points while discussing hierarchy that convince the audience to believe that what he speaks about is the truth. He does tell “The most useful subjects for work are at the top within this hierarchy.” He mentions how children were conditioned to believe that those activities will not get them a job in the future and turned away from activities they enjoy. He specifies this when he says, “If you think of it, the whole system of public education around the world is a protracted process of university entrance.” Many students with different talents get rejected by the university because the talent they had was ignored in the school.

The authors tell them they would understand it more due to him giving his personal life habits, of working hard and getting underpaid because maybe lack of experience or not having a certain degree. Mr. Andrew Braaksma is claiming in the article “Some Lessons from the Assembly Line”, "I have worked as a temp in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer since I graduated from high school, but making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier."(Braaksma 2005) He states in the reading, that it isn 't easy being a full worker then going to college. Some of the considerations about education have changed when we compare those considerations by looking closely at the qualifications of the blue-collar workers and students. Two writers looked at different generations, and one of them focused on the experiences of the blue-collar workers; however, the other writer looked at considerations from another perspective by paying attention to statistics. While in “Blue-Collar Brilliance,” Mike Rose claims that college is not necessary in “Are Too Many People Going to College,” Charles Murray believes college is somehow necessary; however, both Rose and Murray agree on how we value knowledge and how we measure intelligence. In the article “Why College Isn't And Shouldn't Have to be For Everyone” by Robert Reich, he states that “A degree from a prestigious university can open doors to elite business schools and law schools-and to jobs paying hundreds of thousands, if not millions. ”Even though Reich’s article is on the opposing side of the argument, he fails to overlook the fact that in the long run having a college degree will, and can open doors to many new opportunities. One of those opportunities is to be able get a well paying job that can earn more than the average non college graduate.

Some people believe that students who go to college more intelligence than students who go working after graduating high school. However, going to college does not means all students as intelligence; because students might go to colleges to have a degree, but not to be intelligence. Sometimes intelligences can be measures by the level of school a student completed, but for a blue collar job they need to practice and observe in the field to be able to perform the job on they own preference.

The “gross” jobs are going unloved in this world today. Blue-collar jobs are the same as white-collar jobs. Blue-collar jobs use the same skills. If you work hard at your job you can get anywhere with this job. Pay may be low at your starting point, but as you work harder and longer you could become a millionaire.
