Starting a new life away from home can be difficult. Many young adults experience this every year when they decide to go away to college. It is obvious to say that around that age is when young adults start getting to know themselves, and start acquiring better understanding of what they want from life. I am currently going through my first year of college, I can relate to the new lifestyle I started having when I came to CSUCI, but I have also seen many things that has made me learn from other people’s experiences. The letter is based on a mother trying to make a positive proposition to her daughter. The persuader would be the mother and the intended audience is the daughter. The letter is fiction because the mother and daughter doesn’t exist, that will make everyone who reads the letter the intended audience. The author’s objective is to persuade her reader into doing what she thinks it’s right. That is something that we can refer as rhetorical appeals. The big question here is what is rhetoric? Laura Carroll states, “Rhetoric - is the way we use language and images to persuade - is what makes media work” (46). We practice rhetoric everyday in our daily lives, and we don’t even notice it most of the time. The letter is a great example of rhetoric. A mother writes to her daugher, she uses logos and pathos to persuade her daughter into change her new lifestyle. The daughter’s name is Kaylee, she moves on to college and she starts experimenting new things since she left home. She started drinking and going to parties, the mother is concern about her daughter’s well being and she feels like she has make an attempt on making her realize how her decisions could negatively affect her. English 1010 was an amazing class, during the period that the class was going on I was able to develop my communication skills and become aware of the world around me and how individuals operate according to what the society wants from them. The English 1010 class helped in developing a new aspect of reasoning, analyzing and drawing adequate conclusion. Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. On every college campus women are being sexually assaulted, and hardly ever is anyone reporting, not even the victim. Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Rhetoric is used in many different ways and in many different places. When using rhetoric a certain type of language is being used to persuade the audience to do something or believe in something. Martin Luther King uses many different types of rhetoric in “I have a dream” to persuade people to stand with him in fighting against discrimination of another race. Elie Wiesel uses rhetoric in “Keep Memory Alive” to persuade his audience to not be detached from the world and what is going on in it. King uses many rhetorical devices whereas Wiesel uses very few.

In 2008 she was selected to be the honorary speaker at the Harvard graduation ceremony. She makes connections with the audience by mentioning her book, using strategies such as repetition and juxtaposition, and also by throwing the audience into her past where she commemorates the struggles and triumphs she has endured since her own college experiences.
