English 1010 was an amazing class, during the period that the class was going on I was able to develop my communication skills and become aware of the world around me and how individuals operate according to what the society wants from them. As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”

As a Jewish emigrant, Abraham Cahan is on his way to America to make a new home for himself. However, his trip will not be as smooth as the vast ocean he will sail. Walter Benn Michaels has a large amount of knowledge in diversity, he has written many articles on the topic. Michaels has expressed his knowledge and beliefs that there is a great deal of diversity among human beings. Unfortunately, diversity has been defined by the average Americans as racism verses economic stability. In the article, “The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality,” Walter Benn Michaels’ skillful presentation of his logos overshadows his less successful portrayal of pathos and ethos concerning the idea of love for identity. However, Michaels has impeccable logos in the article with his references on the idea of love for identity, but does not express his ethos and pathos as fluent.

Leonard Pitts comforts his readers in his article, “We will go forward from this moment ” by trying to make since of the 9/11 attack. Pitts uses emotion and logic to persuade the Americans that the terrorists can do what they want to America, but America is tough enough to handle it.

Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In Geoffrey Shepherds Article he tires to support, connect and persuade his audience. In “It’s clear the US should not have bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki”, he tries to persuade the audience that the atomic bomb should have never been dropped. Shepherd attempts to persuade his audience by using emotion throughout his article. In his article he states “The bombings probably killed more than 200,000 Japanese civilians and maimed untold more.

Rhetorical Analysis Malala is known for her couragous battle to fight for education for the children in her country, but to me i know her for something else. The way she conveyed her message using rhetorical strategies is how i know Malala. She makes the reader experience in his or her mind what it is to live in pakistan. Malala used very good rhetorical strategies to convey her message and to inspire many around the world, including me.

In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.

The piece of writing which I felt was unsuccessful for me was the Rhetorical Analysis of an article relating to a topic from our course book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. This piece of writing was difficult for me to organize my ideas around. The article that I decided to use for my rhetorical analysis highlighted mass incarceration among African American and the effect of civil liberties being are taken away from these individuals. I had a lot of repetition because many of the examples I used demonstrated more than one type of appeal. I found myself repeating what the purpose of the example was and how it demonstrated proper use of ethos, pathos, and logos.

The controversy I chose for my primary text is the Swedish immigration crisis. The controversy was brought to light during the past decade when the number of incoming asylum seekers from Syria and other countries significantly increased. The far-right, anti-immigrant party’s election polls have also increased drastically during the past few years. This has caused controversy amongst immigrants and Swedish citizens, and has also raised the question of race and racism in the country. A policy such as multiculturalism is one that can easily be blamed for issues such a segregated racial groups, however, if one looks at the broader scope that is multiculturalism, its intention is to recognize the commonality of us all without judgement and in celebration. The biggest issue that faces multiculturalism is that the policy outlines the way that Canadian’s view multiculturalism, but it does not take into account that Canada, like every other country, is static. It is always changing and adapting, even though the policy remains the same (Alghabra 2013). The biggest problem is that the policy has not adapted even though the country has.
