The passage above reveals part of Jane and Mr. Rochester’s argument, where Rochester attempts to convince Jane to stay in Thornfield and become his wife; however, Jane feels it is necessary to leave since Rochester is still married and does not want to be treated as an inferior to Rochester. Brontë expresses that women and men are inherently equal through Jane’s statement with a critical tone and rhetorical questions; this theme further echoed throughout the novel. At this point in the novel, Jane was reluctant to leave Rochester, but was upset and felt it was inappropriate to marry a married man, no matter what state Rochester’s wife was in. In Charlotte Brontë 's, Jane Eyre, we see a reversal of gender roles for both Mr. Rochester and Jane. In multiple scenes of the book the two switch back and forth from their “natural” roles, which ends up benefiting the two. In the story, Mr. Rochester, the big burly owner of Thornfield, occasionally drops his natural patriarchal role to become a feminine character. Jane also does this as she takes on a more masculine role from time to time, and drops her feminine complacency. While usually both characters dropping their gender-specific roles could turn out bad, in this story, dropping the stereotypical gender roles by blurring them leads to happiness by the end of the story.
One of the biggest character foils in Jane Eyre is between Mr. Edward Rochester and St. John Rivers. From the first time we meet these characters, it is easy to tell the two apart. While one is ruled by a religious forces the other is controlled by emotions. Jane has to make a choice, and decide how she is going to live the rest of her life. At the end of the novel, she makes a choice between what is expected of her, and what she wants.

This kind of deceit is very prevalent in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. At first, the façade he puts on seems questionable, but his motives behind his actions show that he had good intentions.

However, we get these two feelings with a girl who is portrayed as an orphan in this chapter. When being an orphan many feelings can run through a person’s mind, for example abandonment and not feeling loved, or being/feeling trapped. Rochester was a major influence on Jane as this was a critical time she was maturing, yet she did not let him get in the way of her work. The work that was expected of her what always her top priority, Rochester was her second. “I believe he is of mine;—I am sure he is,—I feel akin to him,—I understand the language of his countenance and movements: though rank and wealth sever us widely, I have something in my brain and heart, in my blood and nerves, that assimilates me mentally to him” (Bronte 266). Before Rochester, and his influence, Jane had been accustomed to men in power such as John Reed and Mr. Brocklehurst. Their influences on Jane were more negative as they tore Jane down instead of putting her up. These figures allowed the arrival of a seemingly encouraging, kind, and adoring man such as Rochester to be a shock to Jane when she was first employed at Thornfeild. This stems Janes biggest growth from Rochester, the bettering of her self-esteem. Due to Rochester’s exaggerative language he constantly teaches her the value of her self-worth and her beauty.
2 pg 68). This is important because at this moment in time, Mr. Rochester was at the church and about to marry Jane when it is revealed that he is, by law, still married to Bertha Mason. This revelation significantly alters the plot because, had he not been married to her or had no one ever found out that he was, he and Jane would have gotten married and Jane would have stayed at Thornfield. But, instead, he initially tried to deny that he was married and still used his wife’s insanity as a reason to consider himself not married anymore. Because Mr. Rochester was married (and also probably because he lied about it), Jane changed her mind about marrying him and decided to leave Thornfield for good, despite the fact that it was painful for her to leave.
Jane hated that Mr. Rochester bought pretty jewelleries and dresses for her;” the more he bought me, the more my cheek burned with a sense of annoyance and degradation” (Brontë, 321). One can interpret this as Jane worries that the marriage would lessen her independence and put her at an inferior position. The fact that Mr. Rochester buys her all these things makes Jane feel objectified, and she could not tolerate it. Once again, this signals the feministic opinions that the character of Jane is associated with. Charlotte Bronte takes us on a journey from the point which Jane Eyre, the protagonist lives with her aunt and cousins whom very much dislikes her in Gateshead to her going to a boarding school in Lowood, after which she becomes a governess in Thornfield where she falls in love with Mr. Rochester her employer whom she later finds out is married to a mad woman by the name of Bertha Mason, upon her discovery of this she picks up and leaves Thornfield, she then ends up at Marsh End where he meets her relatives.
