A lot of colleges students work part time jobs to help cover the cost of college tuition. Though many schools offer scholarships and financial aid is available it is still hard to cover the full cost of college without taking out student loans. My friend from college has to work a part time job to help cover the cost of school, but unfortunately he just recently lost his job. The loss of his job has caused him a great deal of stress and he doesn’t know how to handle it. According to psychology, there are many ways to deal with stress, but one main idea of dealing with stress was called the cognitive-mediational theory. This idea was created by psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. Lazarus’ and Folkman’s idea explained the mental …show more content…
When someone relies heavily on a job and then loses the job that event can be classified as a threat. In this case my friend losing his job is threatening because it determines his future. When a stressor is classified as threatening, negative emotions arise. My friend will begin to think about not being able to receive a degree and fulfill his dream as working as a medical doctor. When these negative emotions rise it’s hard to cope with the stressor. In the secondary appraisal step, a person must take their threatening, challenging, or harmful stressor and use effective resources to cope with the stressor. Effective resources could be: social support, money, time, energy, or ability. My friend could respond to the stress he is having about losing his job by taking out student loans. Yes, student loans are money you have to pay back, but it will allow him to stay in school and finish his goal of graduating. He could also set aside time to go out and look for a new job, and he will always have to social support from his family and
In the short story A Lifetime of Student Debt? Not likely. Written by Robin Wilson, he goes into detail of the crises of college debt in the United States. The first point being made is on how students over barrow student loans. Some of the students come from low income families, and they are the first generation to ever attend college.
When a student takes a loan out for educational purposes they still get to live their life as a normal student. Also loans are not just limited to education people other than students can take out a loan but Martin didn’t make that clear. The author didn’t give much of a reason behind why he feels the way he does about loans. Loans are available to everyone therefore it doesn’t hold back students who can’t afford it. When a student decides to take a loan they aren’t doing it to not be able to act like a regular student they are actually doing it to be like other students.
It seems that more and more with the rising cost of education, that students have to rely on financing their education so that they can afford tuition every semester. This is no surprise as tuition has increased an average of 7% a year for the last couple of decades. Let's face it, college is just expensive. So unless we work 50 hours a week, or manage to get lots of scholarships and go to a cheap school, we're probably going to have to have some sort of student loan. Most of the time college students will get subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford loans.
Families, who have their own issues, now need to confront the challenges of concocting cash that they scarcely have all together for their child to get instruction at a college institution. Student loan debt is common and is anticipated for undergraduates to seek higher education subsequent to graduating from their high school. College tuition costs are soaring, and a majority of undergraduates experience issues paying for their educational costs. To pay for their college expenses, most students require loans and toward the end of four years, those wind up owing debtors. Student loan debt has an unremitting impression on the lives of those within its grasp, influencing the manner in which they make important life choices.
Students’ loans are the help to achieve students’ goals. However, students’ paid a higher price for have a better education, but they never imagine that to finish a bachelor or master they are condemned to carry a huge loan on their life as having to return all the money they got for finishing their education. According to, Real Life Student Debt Stories, Scrubb White said, “I will not got into debt never in my life,” (Par 7). Scrubb White It is one of many people that living with an enormous burden for many years for a student loan duty; he graduated with honors in 1974 with a degree in Accounting.
Colleges provide part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. It encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study. Also, the student can either work on or off campus. If they work on campus, the work is usually for the school and the off campus work, the employer will usually be a private nonprofit organization and the work is performed for the public interest. Payment is through the school and they must pay directly to the student or the student can request them to send the payments directly to their bank account or use the money to pay for their education-related charges.
Most of my friends who are currently in college have between 5000$-20.000$ in federal and private loans. In many cases, besides for the loans, students have to work and study at the same time, which results in a stressful life for the student. In fact, many students are not able to finish their education because, since they can’t afford it, they have to work over their studies. Out of all the possible reasons to drop out of college, “the No. 1 reason many young adults drop out of college is an inability to juggle school and work” (Johnson). Finishing college is the most decisive forecaster of prosperity in the workforce and the inconsistency in college completion between children of rich and poor families duplicated since the late 1980s (McGlynn 55).
Stress can be seen in everyone’s life but not everyone reacts to stress in the same way. A friend who just lost his job that helped him cover tuition costs might feel very stressed out. He could have many different potential reactions to his job loss but if one were to apply Lazarus and Folkman’s cognitive theory then he would not be too devastated by this stressful event. With this situation, he would engage in primary appraisal, secondary appraisal and a stress response to tear down the stressful event and figure out what he will do.
Student loans can be helpful, but when it's time to pay back, it can lead to future mental struggles and be stressful and hold you back from living the life you want to live in the long run. The student loan debt crisis in now only taking a huge toll on the personal lives of many Americans, but on the economy as well. Whether or not students graduate or not, if they pulled out student loans worth $200,000 they remain in debt for a remainder of years. As the problem continues to grow it becomes more and more critical to find a solution to help the well being of everyone in the nation, student or
In our textbook, it says, “Helpers who work with people experiencing job loss need to take into account such psychological consequences, namely increased stress, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, as well as physical problems that may arise, as they help clients deal with this stressful event” (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p.
After all the scholarship and grant money are used, most people in college are just kind of lost wondering how they’re going to pay for the next semester. And if they can’t figure it out in time then usually they default to student loans or just dropping out. In conclusion student loans are a terrible idea. They are tricky and usually lead to paying much more than intended. It is a decision many later regret in life.
I will compare and contrast Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory and Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. Erikson is a psychoanalytic theorist who believes that our unconscious mind and early experiences in life shape our development. Erikson postulates that we develop in 8 stages that he calls psychosocial stages. Bandura, on the other hand, holds that we develop based on social cognitive stages that are affected by environmental influences. Let’s start with Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory.

A part-time job will not amount to the cost of school and living. Although costs are universally high, some of the cost may rely upon the location of the student in relation to the location of the school. Although there are no solutions to the financial challenges of a college student, there are ways to cope with the issue. The best ways to limit financial stress are buying used textbooks, eating at home, applying for scholarships, applying for financial aid, and making a weekly budget plan. Scholarships and financial aid are given to people who qualify; however, these aids do not pose solutions to the problem.
