Selena is a biographical drama film that tells the life of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Selena was a Tejano singer who was starting to rise to the top of her career before she was killed by her fan club president, the manager of her boutiques, and friend Yolanda Saldívar. The film takes the audience through the singer’s life from the time her father (Abraham Quintanilla) first heard her sing when she was a young girl to her death in 1995, showing her performances, her relationships with her family as well as guitarist Chris Pérez, and the effect that she had on people. In the movie Selena the prominent subgenre of American roots music is Tejano music. Most of the music in the movie was Selena’s music, and the movie uses it to progress the story since it is about Selena’s life and career. Background music throughout the film is also used to set the tone of the scene while people are speaking. From there, the movie shows the reactions of Selena’s family at hearing the news that Selena had passed while Selena’s “Dreaming of You” is playing in the background. After seeing the family’s reactions, a candlelight vigil is shown along with footage of the real Selena performing and just being herself in front of a camera. This song is one of the songs that would have been on her English-language album, so it is different than the ones shown in the film previously. This song is in English and is a slow pop song, which is very different than the upbeat Tejano music she was known for. I like the song’s flow and that it is different than what she had done in the past. I also thought that it fit well with the ending of the film that was remembering

I think that this piece has many characteristics similar to jazz music. For example, the saxophone and piano pieces during 1:22-3:17 are improvised. This piece also incorporates characteristics of folk music, like jazz, by giving this piece a utilitarian purpose with an association with dancing or celebration. This piece has a connotation to me because it is similar to music that is played at most Mexican restaurants. Hearing this piece reminds me of the good times my family has when we go out to
“The goal isn’t to live forever, but to create something that will” Selena Quintanilla started her singing career at about the age 8 to help support her family. The stringed instruments were the accompaniment; therefor, they began with harmonics, chromatics, and tremolo for various measures rather than having a moving part. The melody was given to the flutes and soloist, Sami Junnonen, who was also very talented. The song was about 22 minutes long and he had the whole piece memorized. It sounded very sad, but soothing simultaneously. There were visuals around the theater, which made it easier to understand and visualize what Lopez was trying to describe when writing the song.
