Seneca Falls Convention's Argumentative Analysis

Traditionally, in the early American and European societies women and men were placed in two different spheres (Brinkley, 329). Men, typically, brought in the income doing hard work while the women stayed home to produce and take care of children, these spheres also meant that women weren’t allowed to vote and usually got no education. Rising feminism lead to the Seneca Falls Convention, where Elizabeth Cady Stanton, in the Seneca Falls Declaration wrote that they “declare our right to be free as man is free, to be represented in the government, in which we are taxed to support.” (Doc. I). While, the Declaration of Independence does say that “all men were created equal” the principle of equality stands.

This convention occurred during the year 1848 and lasted for 2 days. The convention had many facets that dealt with equality for both men and women. The Seneca Falls Convention formally introduced ideas that included: equality regardless of gender, equal voting rights for both men and women, and the equal opportunity for participation in trade and commerce. The convention served as a stepping stone on the way to equal rights for all women.

Today, millions of women can implement their rights to vote in all elections in the united states of America, but this (rights) did not come easily to those women who sacrifice their lives to make this happen. In the speech “Address to Congress on Women’s Suffrage”, Catt delivered her message for women’s right from a firsthand account of what she had experienced as a woman living in the United States of America in the 19th century. She advocated for the rights of women to vote because she believes in equal rights and justice for all citizens. The speech was very successful because of the use of ethos, pathos, and logos.

Before the women’s rights movement, when a woman is married the “husband and wife are one person” but “that person is the husband” (Doc 7). Once a woman is married, her rights and property were governed by the husband. Married women could not make wills or dispose of any property without their husband’s consent to do so.

In today’s world, it seems to be that women have the same rights as men, but it wasn't always this way. The speech “Women’s Rights to Suffrage” by Susan B Anthony is the most compelling of all. Susan B Anthony persuades the audience that all women should have the same rights as men. It’s shown through the speech that the federal constitution says “we the people”, the government has no right to take away rights from just one gender, and that women are considered people as well. The fact that the constitution says “we the people” is a primary point in this speech.

Their goal was to convince them to take a pledge against drinking alcohol. The temperance movement was very successful and it significantly reduced the amount of drinking and the problems associated with it. One the last movements toward women gaining their equal rights was when they held the Seneca Falls convention in 1884. This was the first convention in regards to women’s rights.

Susan B. Anthony, a woman who was arrested for illegally voting in the president election of 1872, in her “On Women's Right to Vote” speech, argues that women deserve to be treated as citizens of America and be able to vote and have all the rights that white males in America have. She begins by introducing her purpose, then provides evidence of how women are citizens of America, not just males by using the preamble of the Constitution, then goes on about the how this problem has became a big problem and occurs in every home in the nation, and finally states that women deserve rights because the discrimination against them is not valid because the laws and constitutions give rights to every CITIZEN in America. Anthony purpose is to make the woman of America realize that the treatment and limitations that hold them back are not correct because they are citizens and they deserve to be treated like one. She adopts a expressive and confident tone to encourage and light the hearts of American woman. To make her speech effective, she incorporates ethos in her speech to support her claims and reasons.

This was one of the first steps in the road to freedom for women. They also had many supporters to make the United States of America pass the law for women to vote and have the rights men have.

This first wave brought many changes. Women of this time realized they wanted basic control of their lives. They wanted the right to vote and own property. “The Seneca Falls Convention was the first women’s rights convention in the United States. Held in July
