Marijuana has long since been an illegal in the United States. Marijuana became illegal in the 1930’s. Before it became illegal in the 1930’s, it was very popular. The entire plant was used for medical, spiritual and industrial purposes. At the beginning of the century Marijuana was classified as a drug of abuse and categorized as a Class I drug. Marijuana was no longer believed to have any medicinal value. Marijuana was placed in the same category as stronger drugs such as Heroin and LSD. It is believed that when misused, marijuana can have effects on the brain. When the popularity of abusing marijuana increased, it was viewed as a threat to society. Because marijuana contains over 400 chemicals, it can affect motor skills sometimes cause paranoia. It is also believed to have an ill effect on the reproductive system, sometimes lowering sperm count in males. Furthermore, it is thought to cause difficulties in development of the fetus stage. Comprehension, short term memory and the lungs are believed to be affected as well. These issues are rarely found and the drug is believed to be safe when not abused. The AMA (American Medical Association) feels that our national negative view of the drug is based on only misinformation. It is time for these theories to be debunked. It causes safety issues, can get in the hands of minors, and leads to other dangerous drugs. People think that marijuana cures and relaxes cancer patients. True, it has some benefits, but there are numerous other medications and treatments that relax patients and compromise the risk of cancer. Marijuana is a big safety risk, it causes the multitude of car accidents and other crimes. It also can affect minors who use it, causing them lower life satisfaction and later in life, psychosis.

In the article “Not Just a High,” by Nathan Seppa, the author believes that medicinal marijuana is on the verge of a big breakthrough in the realm of medicine. Although the author clearly states all of the benefits there would be to using medicinal marijuana as a medicine, he also points out that there are still a lot of risks and uncertainties to deal with too.
