Hello! Our names are Cooper Bailey and Andrew Kurdys. We are both seniors at Normal West. Through all these years of being in high school, athletes such as ourselves, have found it hard to really focus on some of our classes and enjoy our time in the classroom. Class options are very limited and there are not very many courses that truly interest us as athletes and high school students. That is why we have thought of the idea of a Sports Language Arts Class. Coming from a first hand perspective of what it is like being a high school athlete, our mind and passion is focused on our sport. So why not bring all that focus and joy straight to the classroom? Student athletes would benefit from this class a lot. Instead of lackadaisically being in class, they could learn about sports history, sports debates, sports finance and management, and sports reading and writing. They could do something that they truly enjoy.

According to Prep Scholar, the nation’s average English score on the ACT is about a 20.4. Which is the lowest average on any subject. A reason this low score happens is because they are reading things they do not care about. Being high school students, we both had our worst scores on the English portion of the ACT test. We really believe that this class would increase students reading and english knowledge because it is something they truly care about.
Parents would even enjoy this class because students would actually focus on the course and take it seriously. According to Education Counts, students do far better in classes that they enjoy, rather than the ones they do not care about. Students that play sports, enjoy the competition and love the game that they play. Bringing that to the classroom could really make students focus and enjoy the class. Debating on topics could bring the good competitive nature to the
Based in the evidence that I have presented above you will agree with my claim that athletes who receive a full athletic scholarship to college, then the athlete should be forced to stay in college for four or more years. Many people may make the statement of, “Who cares if a college athlete stays in college?” However, this matter should be taken seriously and should be taken into consideration by the NBA, NFL, NHL, and other professional sports leagues, because this is a matter that affects not only the athlete’s future life, but their families lives too. Many families’ happiness comes from their child, sibling, or even a family friend succeeding in something that they are passionate towards. By the athlete succeeding in life affects
Sports seem to be a major distraction for academics and is seen as more important than academics; a large portion of students may not be involved in sports and their gateway into a postsecondary institution may be through their academics and how well they have been
Are High School Sports Good For Kids? Daniel Gould describes in his comparison article, “Are High School Sports Good For Kids?” that there are many benefits to playing High School Sports but also could have negative benefits.
In this community lately, there has been discussion lately on sports possibly being removed from the high schools. Although, they get the most recognition that does not mean that just because one little thing it gets removed and completely forgotten about. In fact, so many people do high school sports in the text “Are High School Sports Good For Kids” it explicitly states “Here in Michigan almost 300,000 young people take part in high school sports every year.” This scene particularly shows that many youth athletes participate in high school sports in only one state alone.
Should kids as young as 10 play professional sports with the pros? Kids these days are getting into professional sports when they probably shouldn’t be. Teens are in professional sports but they get hurt or burned out most of the time. Teens should not be allowed to play professional sports, because most kids get burned out at the age of 9 or 10 and kids sometimes have to deal with competitive parents which stresses them out.
In “ High School Athletes Should Be Able to Go Pro”, Pitino addresses the rule of having to be 19 to enter the draft. And how he thinks you should be able to go pro straight out of high school. Rick states that he had 6 guys commit to him but didn 't go they went straight to the NBA. Because they didn 't want college they wanted to start making their living. And gives a resolution if the league didn 't want them to go straight there.
For the past decade or more there has been one topic that has been a hot button of conversations for student-athletes. Many people think that it is whether they should stay and get their degree or go professional early, but it’s not but rather should student athletes be paid. This topic has brought up many spirited and heated debates on the topic. There are multiple reasons why student-athletes should and shouldn’t be paid. I will provide reasons why they should and shouldn’t
The article highlights the exploitation of college athletes, who often generate millions of dollars in revenue for their universities but receive little compensation and face significant barriers to academic success. The demands of sports, such as long hours of practice and travel, can make it difficult for student athletes to prioritize their education and may students will start to fall behind their fellow classmates and not have a chance to pass the class or even graduate on time. Additionally, the article notes that many student athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds and lack the resources and support systems necessary to excel academically. When given an opportunity to compete in college as an athlete many of these kids forget that they still have to participate in school and coming from their background as struggling students itll be even harder for them to learn in the college environment. If they struggled from elementary to high school there is a little chance that they will be able to be above average in college and without the money or help given by the school it makes it even worse.
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.
“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, the power to unite people that little else has... It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers” (Nelson Mandela). Everyone remembers at some point in their life playing a sport, whether it be in school or to pass the time or on an actual sports team. Even in the case of people who have never played a sport, have at least seen a sport being played.
There are many controversial debates out in the world, but one big topic people come across is if all the kids on a team of some sort deserve a participation trophy just for socialization. Many can go back and forth and have their voice of reason with this issue but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However sources show different kinds of theories on what people think should happen with trophies like these whether it be good or bad, but they also discuss how getting rid of these trophies may help motivate kids to do great things in their sport. Participation trophies should not be given out to a whole team. This debate really started to get acknowledged when NFL linebacker James Harrison took a picture of his kids’ trophies and said he was going to send them back.
If you have ever been in sports or school athletics, act fast! Schools are getting rid of their sports and we need to stop it. “Being a student is harder than ever. You are being held to tougher academic standards-and so is your school.
The main question that most people in today's world can not answer is, “is college student athletes employees or are they just students who represent their school by playing sports?” The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sees them as student athletes who represents their schools by playing sports for their college or university. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is an organization that organizes athletic programs of 1281 institutions or colleges from the United States and Canada compete in college sports. The NCAA has core values that are a very important part of a college student athletes expectations. There are many people who believe the student athletes should get paid and should get treated as celebrities
To most kids and students, competitive sports are a gateway to blow off some steam or to have fun. To parents, the sports that their children play and the lessons that they teach are an important part of their development and life. Despite what many ‘experts’ would like you to believe, both of these statements are completely true. I believe that kids should be allowed to play competitive sports due to the health benefits, the lessons that they can teach, and as a result of the advanced equipment and rules that are focused on making sports safe, as well as the fact that sports can keep kids out of trouble. One extremely important reason that forces me to take the position that kids should be allowed to compete in competitive sports is the health benefits that children who play sports recieve.
Many sports in high school are either a team or an individual, but many athletes practice with other students in the same sport. Typically,
