In The Great Indian debate, there were two debaters, Mary Rowlandson and Benjamin Franklin. These two people had polar opposite views on the native population in puritan american. Mary Rowlandson was captured and held by native americans for close to eleven weeks during King Phillip’s war. Mary R. published a book titled The Sovereignty and Goodness of God: Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, six years after she was released. In her writings she describes how she was captured and her children 's life as well as her own during her captivity.

“Nobody, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man’s mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time (Laurence Sterne).” In The Crucible, playwright Arthur Miller wrote the character of Mary Warren to be coerced into two differing conflicts driven by her obligations and influences in acts two and three, just as Sterne’s quote describes. Throughout the play, the character of Mary Warren was pulled by the compelling influences and obligations put on her by John Proctor and Abigail Williams; this relates to the theme of power and what people do for it that was presented throughout the play. Furthermore, in acts two and three Mary Warren was obligated to help John Proctor get Elizabeth out of jail.

During the colonial period numerous new things were taking place, people were gaining independence and literature was developing. By 1763 there was over 12,000 separate works published in North America. Both Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition and Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson detail the author’s journeys during certain period of their lives. Religious devotion is apparent throughout both books in many different ways. Rowlandson and de Vaca look to God for comfort, to help them meet their needs and to guide them.

Equiano vs Mary Rowlandson Human rights is defined as “the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are considered to be entitled, often held to include the rights to life, liberty, equality, and a fair trial, freedom from slavery and torture, and freedom of thought and expression.” This isn’t what Equiano or Rowlandson were allowed. Though both had different situations, they had many similarities as well. The two narratives, Equiano and Rowlandson, are similar in that they both were captured for money, but different because of their attitude towards their individual situation. To begin with, we see that both stories share a motivation for their captors, which is money.

Through all the hardships optimism and hope were two of the most important characteristics a passenger would have to retain through both journeys; both slave and pilgrims had to believe that wherever the end up will be better than the ship they were on. A simple slip in these would quickly lead to the downfall of the traveler. Faith was another important quality and the Puritans had it strong and proud. Even in the hardest of times these people believed their lives were in the hands of God and if he wanted them to live then they would live; however, this idea of faith in God was much harder for the slaves to hold. How could a God who supposedly loves each person allow for such a cruel fate to fall upon someone?

The Puritans were a religious group who believed in total depravity and an unconditional election. This meant that mankind was solely dependent on God for salvation, and believed that there was absolutely no good within the world except through Him. Those who were of “the chosen people” were predestined to go to heaven and only had a glimpse of their faith through God’s signs and wonders. Jonathan Edwards, however, struggled with this idea. Throughout his childhood, he could not perceive how a loving and just God could send only a certain select to Heaven and the rest to Hell.

The Puritans are also frightened by all the talk of G-d’s wrath and immense strength that they realize their subordination to this almighty G-d simply has to be accepted. G-d cannot be thwarted by man because man is just too helpless to math his inconceivable

Abigial wanted the same right as men were demaning, but John Adams too thought women were compared to children. John made sure wives, children, and minrors (under 21) were dined rights. Phillis Wheatley: thought enslaved people should were rational and deserved liberty. Mary Wollstonecraft:

Puritans are a people with a very strong belief in both God and the power of God. When people see power, they interpret it in different ways. Some know of power through anger and impulse, while others see power through the goodness the powerful one shows. Although Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards are both puritan poets, their writings convey mainly different, though sometimes similar, views on God because they have different perceptions of His will and the use of His power. Anne Bradstreet listens to and accepts anything that God wishes, and that is shown through her poem Upon the Burning of my House.

During the Puritan times gender roles in the society were very anti-feminist. Women were required to act as housewives and do womanly duties such as cook, clean, and take care of their children. Women had very little freedom as far as their rights were concerned also. Puritan writers, Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson both experienced the struggle of the anti-feminist movement. From their writings we see that they both were against anti-feminism and they tried their best to abandon the whole idea.

Thomas Morton and William Bradford are both famous for their accounts of New England. Thomas Morton and William Bradford practiced different religions. Thomas Morton was a conservative Anglican, which meant that he believed in the Church of England. William Bradford was a Puritan, which meant that he wanted separate congregations from the Church of England. Both men based their accounts of New England off of their religious views.

Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano: Comparing Captivity Experiences Americans have been intrigued by captivity novels and works for centuries. It could be the sense of danger and unpredictability that makes them so interesting and popular. Or maybe the idea that captivity was quite possible for readers in previous centuries made captivity narratives popular in Colonial Times. Speaking of Colonial Times, two popular captivity narratives that took place in that era that have many similarities and differences are; A Narrative of the Captivity of Mary Rowlandson and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano.

He writes, Being thus arrived in a good harbor and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of heaven, who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element (Baym 75).
