Spanish American War Research Paper

The controversy surrounding the decision to drop atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has raged on for years. Others maintain that the bombing was needless and unjustified, while others maintain that it was vital to end the war and preserve lives and that it was important to end the war. In this paper, I will inspect, analyze, and criticize the argument on the bombing of Japan during World War Two that was presented by Kevin O'Reilly in his book "From Spanish-American War to Vietnam War." O'Reilly's thesis is found in "From Spanish-American War to Vietnam War. " We are going to go over the essay paragraph by paragraph and analyze its goal, the type of support it provides, and the quality of that support.

At the height of the Gilded Age, the want of power outside of the American borders controlled the causes and ends of war, specifically the Spanish-American War. A war that lead a country whose history was founded on independence to seek dominance over its own colonies. There were two clear opinions to this imperialist stance, for and against. Both opinions were ironically based in the same general ideas only with different perspectives on them. Arguments and questions based on morality, economic stability, and God given purposes.

Opposition to Spanish - American War Following the explosion of the USS Maine in February 15, 1898, while many Americans favored going to war with Spain, some were adamantly against the notion. The few who were against the idea of going to war include President McKinley, a fraction of African Americans, and one significant group, “ The Anti- Imperialism League”. Immediately after the explosion of the USS Maine, President McKinley, who disliked the idea of going to war ordered an investigation of the explosion. Americans claimed that an external force caused the sinking of the ship and the death of 266 crew members while Spain claimed that the sinking was the result of an internal force.

In the late 1800’s, Cuba was fighting for its independence and striving to break free from Spain’s control. On February 28, 1898, the U.S.S Maine mysteriously exploded, which was stationed on the coast of Cuba. This led to the U.S involvement in the Spanish-American War. There were many economic reasons why the U.S joined this war, however, there was nothing significant that would require their involvement. The U.S was already keeping a close eye on the battle between the other two nations; waiting for a reason to intervene.

Mexican War The Mexican-American War took place in the time period of 1846 to 1848. This was the first U.S. armed war that was mostly fought on foreign land. It was fought between two neighboring countries. One was a politically divided and militarily unprepared Mexico and the other was the expansionist-minded United States.

After the sinking of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor and the eyebrow raising concerns of Spanish treatment of Cuba, President William McKinley declared war against Spain, originating in The Spanish-American War of 1898. It was then that America intervened in Cuba’s war for independence from Spain, eventually seizing the Spanish territories of the Philippines and Guam. As a result, they soon found themselves involved in the mist of the Philippine Revolution. Subsequently, working for and being under Spanish control, Aguinaldo joined a movement launching an uprising for the Philippines fight for independence.

1898 Spanish American War On the year of 1898, tensions between the United States and Spain begun to rise over the domination of Spain of Latin America and some places of the Caribbean. The war started because Cuba was eager to reach for independence from Spain. There was word that the spanish rulers of Cuba were treating the people brutal. Cuban forces demolished areas of the island so the Spanish would not be able to stay.

Hearst and Pulitzer manipulated public opinion in order to have the American people intervene. The U.S.S. Maine was located in the Havana harbor two hundred and sixty sailors died due to the explosion. This gave the American government exactly what they needed in order to go into cube. They came up with the slogan “Remember the Maine to Hell with Spain.”

The Spanish-American War was a conflict in 1898 between Span and the U.S. caused by an intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. Cuba was revolving against Spain a couple times what was leading to several wars. Madrid declared the war first, then Washington. After the sinking of an US Navy Battleship, the democratic party pushed the administration of Republican President William McKinley into a war, which he didn't want to do, but still did it. The United States expected Spain to surrender Cuba to them.

Since the beginning, the US has continuously grown to find its place in the world. What started as a nation that was having no problems, the United States has become a better global economy. Along with the money-based power and the different foreign policies put into law since the Civil War, the US has found itself known as the “World Police”. The title of the Policemen of the World came about with the Spanish-American War and had since led to involvement in foreign conflicts on many occasions.

Americans learned more about what happened during the Spanish American War through articles that exposed the violent tensions in Cuba. The Americans then felt the need that we should help Cuba against Spain. The Americans in power wanted to remain neutral, while the public wanted to go to war. The U.S. Maine was a battleship that was sent to Cuba to spy on them and understand the situation in person. While the ship was there, it mysteriously blew up, the blame was put on Spain for the explosion.

After many complications with Latin America, the Spanish-American War is finally upon us. It all started with the Cuban rebellion. In the early months of 1898, riots began to erupt in Havana, Cuba. This began to worry American citizens. Mckinley, our president, sent a ship called the U.S.S. Maine to Havana’s harbor.

In 1898, a short, sharp war over Cuba led the U.S. to take control of Cuba, the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico. Cuban rebels had long been fighting to free their land from Spanish rule. In 1895, this rebellion flared up again. It threatened U.S. interests in Cuba. There were many causes to the Spanish American War, however there are some that play a much larger role in the cause of the war.

Hostilities grew and President McKinley sent the battleship Maine to protect Americans on the Island. On February 15th 1898, the Maine exploded and sank in Havana and the cause was not determined. McKinley, however not interested with the idea of war, declared war on Spain on April 20th 1898. The war took place in the Philippines, where Secretary of War Theodore Roosevelt led attack of the Spanish in Manila. United States military moved quickly through the Island and took San Juan Hill in July 1st 1898.

In 1890 the U.S. went into war with spain for many reason for example. yellow journalism, imperialism and the sinking of the Maine is what caused the American population to want to go to war with Spain. yellow journalism is what got the rage in the american public. When the U.S.S. Maine was sunk word spread fast and the people were quick to blame the Spanish. Since the U.S had so many investments in Cuba it made one of the causes of the Spanish American War
