Spanish War: The Spanish/American War

Between the years of 1846 to 1848, the first war started by America against another republic raged on. The Mexican-American war was mainly started by president James K. Polk, due to his belief in Manifest Destiny and his goal to fulfill it. But despite this war being “Mr. and Mrs. Polk 's war”, it reflected on the much of the population of America, specifically the way the country treated non-white people. Many injustices against non-white people occurred during this time period, slaves and the politics surrounding them were involved in the war, but a main group subject to the injustices were the Mexican citizens. In fact, many Americans considered Mexicans “but little removed above the negro”, as one Democratic newspaper put it.

The Spanish-American war commenced with the Wilson- Gorman Tariff, 1894. The American tariff on sugar imports hurt the Cuba's economy that was manufactured sugar. After the war, most German observers still failed to read the results properly. They claimed that the Americans had not faced a serious opponent who would have exposed her military weaknesses. McKinley and Congress began the Spanish-American War simply to gain popularity with the American public, for they were sympathetic towards the idea of war, and to help the United States gain control of the Western world. Some American wanted to have a third party ticket to try and president McKinley because of the way the war turned out. The essential argument behind this was that the United States was intended to be a place where all men could vote and hold power in the government and furthermore, the United States from its Declaration of Independence was an anti-imperialist power. So when the Eastern conference had its session their discussion was on President McKinley being criticized and held responsible for criminal aggression of the country.

Americans learned more about what happened during the Spanish American War through articles that exposed the violent tensions in Cuba. The Americans then felt the need that we should help Cuba against Spain. The Americans in power wanted to remain neutral, while the public wanted to go to war. The U.S. Maine was a battleship that was sent to Cuba to spy on them and understand the situation in person. While the ship was there, it mysteriously blew up, the blame was put on Spain for the explosion.
