Sucralose (Splenda) Sucralose has been proven to worsen diabetes, abort pregnancies, and toxify the liver and kidneys. These are unmistakable signs that sucralose is an extremely dangerous substance, but it is the least-studied artificial sweetener. It is one of the more recent additions to the diet industry. One of the reasons for sucralose 's fast-track approval is because aspartame cannot be used in baked foods, for it breaks down at high temperatures into toxic substances, as it does during metabolisis within the human body. Sucralose was hailed to be a better alternative for cooking, but it releases chloropropanols when heated, which are toxic chlorine byproducts. A 2008 study by Duke University titled, Splenda Alters Gut Microflora and …show more content…
In 2005, researchers at the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy conducted such a study. The study found that rats exposed to aspartame starting at 8 weeks of age, and continuing throughout their lives, developed leukemias, lymphomas, and kidney tumors. In 2007, the same researchers published a follow-up study that exposed rats to aspartame beginning in the womb and continuing throughout their lives. It found that aspartame caused lymphomas, in addition to mammary (breast) cancers. In 2010, the group exposed test mice to aspartame while they were still in the womb again, and made the startling discovery that the mice developed liver cancers and lung cancers …show more content…
In 1997, the diet industry began seeking permission to remove the warning label from saccharin products. As a Christmas present to the chemical industry, the U.S. Congress passed another law specific to helping it on December 21st, 2000, wherein it removed the mandatory warning label requirement for saccharin. Around the same time, the Canadian Government unlisted saccharin as a carcinogen too. The revisionist history now states that the original studies which proved saccharin 's dangers were flawed, because the biological mechanism that caused cancers in rats may not necessarily appear in humans. Even if this were true (and it is not), it ignores the fact that numerous studies since have proven the human cancer risk. The link between saccharin and kidney failure in humans has also been repeatedly established, as well as the tendency of saccharin to cause bladder cancers. Infants who are fed saccharin develop muscular disorders, alongside irritability, and
Many people want to believe old age will kill them, but more than likely, the killer will come from what they put into their bodies. Every day, people are faced with affecting their own health. To do so, one must be conscious of what their temple receives; this means people must watch what they eat. People must look at the ingredients contained in everyday foods, what those ingredients cause to happen in the body, and the effects the ingredients have on the body, like the ingredient high fructose corn syrup. The amounts of overconsumed and unhealthy contents of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) need to be replaced by natural sugars.
Majority of food manufacturers use a whole lot of chemicals and artificial ingredients in high amounts to achieve the desired taste, texture and shelf life. However, in the long run extensive consumption of products that contain such ingredients can have adverse affect on human health. This is one of the reasons why health conscious consumers avoid processed food and look for healthy recipes that use natural ingredients and which are also easy to cook, thus giving them the satisfaction of eating healthy food. What Is That Makes HFCS Bad? According to research ninety percent of the corn produced in US is genetically modified, and this is the same corn that goes into the making of high fructose corn syrup which is an artificial sweetener.
Secondly, many individuals are susceptible to getting cancer due to their genetics. According to Document H, “Researchers found that some women have a genetic predisposition to use the pathway that creates the bad metabolite (16-alpha-hydroxyestrone). These women have a greatly increased risk for breast cancer. ” If a cell in the reproductive system becomes mutated, the mutation could possibly pass to the next generation.
Several acts have been passed that protect the safety and health of United States Consumers. The Food and Drug act of 1906 requires that there be unity and uniformity among food and drug products, and restricts the sale of hazardous goods. The Food Code of 2013 sets standards for food processing. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act ensures that products are not only safe for consumers, but that they are also fully aware of the goods they are buying. These acts beginning in 1906, have protected the public’s health, and prevented illness for over 100 years.
Lustig (2012) explains and suggests the following: Authorities consider sugar as ‘empty calories’ but there is nothing empty about these calories. A growing body of scientific evidence is showing that fructose can trigger processes that lead to liver toxicity and a host of other chronic diseases… they [Government] must consider limiting fructose and its main delivery vehicles, the added sugars HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) and sucrose, which pose dangers to individuals and to society as a whole. (p.28) Another process that occurs in the body is that, “sugar dampens the suppression of the hormone ghrelin, which signals hunger to the brain…interferes with the normal transport and signaling of the hormone leptin, which helps to produce the feeling of satiety…and it reduces dopamine signaling in the brain’s reward center” (Lustig, 2012, p. 28). Though these are only a few examples and there are many more such as sugar feeding cancer cells, it should give you a basic understanding of just how bad sugar is for the
Although sugar is seen as the public’s number one enemy. Nancy Appleton a writer who wrote Suicide By Sugar, blames the government and certain food industries for creating advertisements promoting bad sugars. But also in charge of creating the child obesity epidemic in America, endangering young children’s health in the U.S. Since some foods have artificial sugars, sugar decreases the quality of life in the U.S. Stated by the Journal of the American Heart Association Internal Medicine, “People who consumed more than a quarter of their daily calories as sugar… twice as likely to die” (Health, Richards). This statistic by a credible source pulls the audience in because they are part of that population who intake sugar and can die faster by consuming it.
Sugar, which is in almost everything, is one of the biggest problems. As noted on, “Is Sugar Toxic”, Dr. Robert Lustig, the lead researcher says sugar links to a number of diseases from obesity to heart disease. He also states that 75% of these are preventable. Studies have shown that when we consume sugar, it’s equivalent to when someone does cocaine. Another study by Dr. Cantley has shown that sugar can help cancerous cells grow and multiply.
Some of these ingredients have been identified as causative agents of cancer, and birth
These chemicals in their raw state are very powerful and if consumed in their raw state can lead to death. Most of them are several if not several hundred times sweeter then regular cane sugar. But yet have no nutritional value to the human body. This causes a problem when the artificial sweeteners reach the liver and kidneys and get absorbed into the blood stream then move throughout the body. For instance, aspartame, witch is found in Sweet 'n Low, is very harmful to the brain.
Millions of people each day go to the store and purchase meat, produce, and medicine, without worrying if it’s safe, or whether it may be contaminated with things like paint stripper or cocaine. Prior to 1906, there was no organization to monitor whether or not any food or drug contained what it said, let alone if it was safe to be consumed. Even though legislation wouldn’t come for many more years, research into food safety dates all the way back to 1862 when scientist Charles M. Wetherill, who worked for the Department of Agriculture, began testing samples of food for purity. Wetherill’s first project focused on the alcohol content in wine but later led to him and other scientists focusing on problems such as contaminated milk from cows with
Many companies and people had failed to label foods and drugs properly claiming that they are something they are not. “Before the act, companies could alternate ingredients for a more inexpensive, low quality substitute. This made for a better profit for the producers” (“Results/Impact.”). However, with the Pure Food and Drug Act these “companies could either shut down or label the foods properly” (“Results/Impact.”). Many were against consuming products that were harmful to them which is why “[t]he House vote was 240-17” (Robertson, Derek, et al.), making the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 “one of the most daring demonstrations of bureaucratic autonomy in the history of the United States” (“Pure Food and Drug Act (1906).”).
After this act was passed, the government was locking down on products that were exposed to the public, preventing producers from contaminating our products, but contamination was not the only problem the government faced. In 1910, the American government seized a fairly large quantity of a product called Johnson’s Mild Combination Treatment for Cancer, this case brought up one major issue of the act. The medication that the government took was not polluted with any poisonous chemicals, but the producers labeled the product with false advertisement. The medication label stated that it was a suppresser of cancer progression, which it was not. The Supreme Court ruled against them “finding that the product 's false claims of effectiveness were not within the scope of the Pure Food and Drugs Act, Congress enacted the Shirley Amendment in 1912 to overcome the ruling in U.S. v. Johnson” (FDA Consumer Magazine, 2009).
On the other hand, proven that there is a possibility that it can cause cancer and other diseases. In North Dakota, they genetically modified sugar beets so pesticides would not ruin the crop, however they have the highest rate of stomach cancer in the U.S. Scientists have linked GMOs, used to modify the sugar beets, back to people having cancer. Notwithstanding, people try to deny that modifying the sugar beet was the cause of everybody parlaying stomach cancer. Proven as a fact, that the modified sugar beets caused the stomach cancer, so the company that came out with the genetically modified sugar beets, sued for not testing the chemicals for cancer and diseases.
But with the help of Ben Goldacre and his book “Bad Science” I fee as though I am no able to spot bad science from a mile away. Drawing on such theories like the effect of placebo, sugar pills, and the dangers of miss informed ‘scientists’ claiming to have come up with new sciences behind certain foods (cough, cough. Dr. McKeith). In summary, the book has provided me with a breath of fresh air on controversial non scientific theories that have been built up through time and sold to us by ‘scientists who do not understand the aspects of basic biology. I would like to thank my professor for making us read this book and more importantly Ben Goldacre for shedding the light on Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma
Processed foods and beverages are the biggest sources of added sugar (and High fructose) in the diet. Sugar is very unhealthy and can have serious adverse effects on metabolism when consumed in excess. Sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth. For people who are inactive and eat a processed food, large amounts of fructose from added sugars get turned into fat in the liver.
