This section did not have hope in it unlike the past section. However, I was able to get more of a perspective of how activities ran in Auschwitz and all the other camps intermingled within it. I found that the section had only a few parts that were disturbing, but for the most part, I find that the author of the book is increasingly likeable. Although he has guilt for some of his orders, it is a significant contrast from the guards in charge whom do not care about any prisoner. What I found to be very reprimandable is when Nyiszli gave the female prisoners medicine to take back to their shacks.

Chapter One: Introduction During the English Civil War, in the 1640s, the Earl of Clarendon came up with a novel wheeze: rather than allow those presumed to be parliamentarian enemies to claim the benefit of the rule of law, he would establish a prison on an island off the British shoreline. That way, he reasoned, they could be safely forgotten, buried along with their legal rights. When parliament later looked back on this dark chapter of British history, they passed the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679 to ensure that never again would an unpopular group of people be denied justice. Clarendon was impeached by the House of Commons and fled to France, where he died in exile.

Loss of Faith and Childhood Innocence Since it first came out in 1960, over 10 million copies of Night by Elie Wiesel have been sold; the moving story recounts the anecdote of a firsthand account of the Holocaust. Professor and author Ellen S. Fine comments that the book "[...] communicates the vision of a nightmare: the voyage from a familiar to unknown world, a son's perception of the slow death of his father and the spiritual death of himself" (48). It outlines the author as a teenager before and during the Holocaust, including his relationships, the horrors he witnesses, and his journey with faith.

This book was first published in 1989 by Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel is a jewish writer who was born in 1928 in Sighetu Marmației, Transylvania, which is apart of Romania. Him and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz in which him and his two older sisters survived. At first I was selecting a book to get it over with, but after I’ve read the story I started to take interest in it.

It is set during the Holocaust and tells the story of a young boy named Elie Wiesel who was taken with his family from their home in Sighet, a small town in Transylvania to a concentration camp. The book covers the horrific experiences of the author and his family as they are subjected to unimaginable suffering including starvation, torture, and madness. Elie Wiesel narrates the account himself with brutal honesty, taking his readers through the darkest moments of his life with vivid descriptions.

In the memoir,night,by elie wiesel he recounts the horrors that occurred during the holocaust. In the first chapter elie wanted to be really big on religion with him and his religion teacher and during this time mooshie the teacher was taken to the camps and he faked his death and what he saw terrorized him for life. What Mooshie saw was the Germans and people that worked for hitler were using baby jews as target practice.and whenever mooshie came back he tried to tell the other jews of what he had saw and they thought that he was lying so they didnt do anything about what he had said so then later that night. Hitler Came with the germans and they put them on an cattle cart.

Elie witnessed some intense cruelty in the camps and he began to question his faith. The event that he was forced to spectate that really changed his view on God was the hanging of the young boy. A young boy with an angel's face was accused of sabotaging an electrical plant that gave power to the camp and was sentenced to death. The boy and three other men were hung in front of all the other prisoners. Before he actually died, he “remained for more than half an hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes”(65).

From the beginning, Elie Wiesel 's work details the beginning of his adult life by focussing on his awareness of Judaism, its history, and its significance to the religion. Despite warnings about German intentions towards Jews, Eliezer’s family and the other Jews in the small town of Sighet, fail to escape the country when they have a chance. As a result, the Jewish population is sent to concentration camps all throughout Germany. Then, after being sent to a concentration camp, Eliezer is separated from his mother and younger sister, but remains with his father. The camp then pushing Eliezer and his father 's faith in the Jewish religion.

At this point in time, his faith is almost in shambles and he is at breaking point. Elie announces God’s death within him, as the gallows symbolized the fate of the ones hanged on them. Furthermore, during Yom Kippur, it is necessary to fast in order to proclaim one’s conviction. Elie did the very act he would never have pictured himself committing years ago, “I no longer accepted God’s silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against Him,” (page 69).

In the book Night, by Elie Wiesel, there was a very strong shift in the tone just within the first three chapters. “The shopkeepers were doing good business, the students lived among their books, and the children played in the streets”(Weisel 6). It is shown here that they were living ordinary, peaceful lives. “The shadows around me roused themselves as if from a deep sleep and left silently in every direction”(Weisel 14). This is where people began to no longer feel peaceful and began the long journey of fear and worry that would get worse throughout the book.

The author of the Night did not understand why God punishes the innocent and righteous, who worship Him, even in the death camp, what did they do? They pray for you! Glorify your name. Wiesel openly expressed his hatred for God, was not afraid. He thought that after what happened in Auschwitz, the religious dimension of Jewish identity completely lost its meaning.

Elie became independent from God and refused to view him as omnipotent, and therefore, Elie and the other inmates believed that“ [they] were masters of nature, masters of the world” (87). With the daunting experience that Elie had undergone, he felt that the camps had utterly devoured his identity and his soul, but because he suffered blisteringly and managed to abide, even if “ [he] was nothing but ashes now, [he] felt [himself] to be stronger than this Almighty to whom [his] life had been bound for so long” (68). Although Elie was at last, liberated from the concentration camp, the rigorous conditions and brutal treatments from the camps has weakened him physically, mentally, and spiritually. Elie, bereft of his faith and soul, looked into mirror for the first time after his liberation, and “from the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating him” (115). Through tormenting sufferings and witnessing the mortifying decimation in the Holocaust, Elie’s faith is eventually dismantled

To find a man who has not experienced suffering is impossible; to have man without hardship is equally unfeasible. Such trials are a part of life and assert that one is alive by shaping one’s character. In the autobiographical memoir Night by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, this molding is depicted through Elie’s transformation concerning his identity, faith, and perspective. As a young boy, Elie and his fellow neighbors of Sighet, Romania were sent to Auschwitz, a macabre concentration camp with the sole motive of torturing and killing Jews like himself. There, Elie experiences unimaginable suffering, and upon liberation a year later, leaves as a transformed person.

Chapter One Summary: In chapter one of Night by Elie Wiesel, the some of the characters of the story are introduced and the conflict begins. The main character is the author because this is an autobiographical novel. Eliezer was a Jew during Hitler’s reign in which Jews were persecuted. The book starts out with the author describing his faith.
