American mobs and rioting was not a nineteenth century Baltimorean invention. The colonial American mobs opposing British imperial measures was similar to the bread riots described by E.P. Thompson; crowds acted to re-establish “just price,” set by custom and ancient law, and violated by grain merchants. Occasionally a mob would destroy property, as seen in the famous Boston Tea Party or in the destruction of Governor Thomas Hutchinson’s house in 1765. However, the mob rarely acted violently towards individual persons with the intent to kill or inflict harm. Also, unlike their British counterparts, American mobs have yet to target civilian or non-governmental entities like they did in Baltimore in 1812. As previously noted, Mayor Johnson was present before the mobs on June 22 and July 27-28, pleading with them to disperse. Following the June 22 destruction of Hanson’s office, Mayor Johnson and city magistrates assembled all of the city’s officials and constables for a parade through the streets. Their intent was to show the laborers and other mob participants that the city’s elite was united against further acts of public disorder and destruction. The laborers were unmoved by the elite’s display and continued to voice their displeasure against Federalists supporters who spoke out condemning the June 22 event. At this point, in Baltimore city, the working class denied paternalistic authority and asserted a new, purely democratic order of society where their mob justice would enforce the “laws of nature and reason” not the Baltimore government or …show more content…
Hanson and his Federalists affiliates on the two separate occasions. However, the same forces were present in other protests and mob functions in colonial and post-revolution America. Yet, those mobs rarely resorted to violence, especially murder and merciless beatings. One possible explanation as to why the mobs in Baltimore unexpectedly turned violent is that the European immigrant population of Baltimore City, united around a shared hatred of the British, developed powerful bonds in the preceding years because the city was founded on economic growth, not ancient social hierarchies or familial relations. There were reports of inter-Irish fighting in the midst of the riots, but German, Dutch, French, and Irish laborers in Baltimore City worked together on the docks and in the various public works projects. They were treated and paid equally based off of their labor, not ethnic background. While their home countries were at war with each other, the immigrant workers in Baltimore were not divided, they were united on their own defined terms with their own agenda. This awakening of the working class in Baltimore, although for nefarious purposes, exemplifies the origins of populist movements that would sweep the nation in the subsequent decades. The Baltimore Riots fundamentally changed how elites, government
Various newspapers called for a ban on imported British goods and non-consumption of British goods and more home manufactures (LEP,5-3b). Boston, Massachusetts once again set the stage for rebellion, “its assembly petitioned the King, not Parliament, against the new measures. Without waiting for a reply, it also sent a Circular Letter to the other assemblies, urging them to pursue “constitutional measures” of resistance” (LEP5-3b) against different taxes and use the profits from the Townshend Act to pay their political figure heads. With the Boston Massacre, British soldiers murdering innocent people simply by mistake, this was a turning point in regards to public opinion. In addition to this, Lord North prompted Parliament to repeal the Townshend duties, all but the one on tea.

It was the first time in the early 19th century that the United States formed a union to resist exploitation. Moreover, Detroit also is important it was one of the cities that pioneered the civil rights movement. Through a comprehensive understanding of the motivations and underlying factors of the rioters in Baltimore, a deeper interpretation of post-revolutionary nationalism may be revealed. This gained knowledge would help twenty-first century Americans understand current nationalist trends and movements while such movements interact with contemporary political and socioeconomic variables. Therefore, the relatively peaceful demonstrations and assemblies common in the early republic unexpectedly turned violent in Baltimore City during the summer of 1812 because of the Federalist and Democratic-Republican politics and their interactions with the nationalistic, yet diverse, groups of wage laborers in Baltimore
This is seen after a mob disassembled Stamp Act collector Andrew Oliver’s house, but Samuel Adams and the local legislature chose not to press charges. Similarly, the gentry also popularized their message through the press to get the lower and middle sorts to join their cause. This is seen through the Boston Massacre, which was not an actual massacre, but the gentry spun it this way to gain support. This was important because the more violence that the colonists witnessed, the more the citizens began to apply the gentry’s message of liberty to their own lives and related their grievances with the gentry’s (Watson, 183).
Why would an enraged mob form outside the home of a new neighbor who is a well-educated and a well-mannered medical doctor, his gracious young wife, and their 18 month old baby? It was 1925, Dr. Sweet was black, and the neighborhood was an all-white working class section of Detroit. “When Dr. Ossian Sweet bought a house in an all-white section of Detroit in the summer of 1925, he knew his move might trigger white violence. “Well, we have decided we are not going to run," he told a colleague a few weeks before taking possession of his new home. “We’re not going to look for any trouble, but we 're going to be prepared to protect ourselves if trouble arises."
Is loyalty to your family stronger than loyalty to the law or is the Law stronger than Loyalty to the family? The ones who are with Law says that it keeps everything in order while ones who are with Family says that family will always support you. There is a line between Law and Family but family will always dominate the Law. Family are people who will be by your side they don’t even have to be related to you to be Family. In the passage Rioting in Baltimore, a black man was killed by a police officer and caused a riot, His family weren’t going to be quiet and just let this happen they fought back
This overstep of power is demonstrated in the aftermath of both Gabriel’s Rebellion and the Pullman Strike. In response to Gabriel’s Rebellion the government tightened its control on African Americans in order to prevent any change in their social status. Furthermore, the governments interference oppressed the African Americans in order to preserve the white supremacy in the southern states. The government upheld this status because, at the time of the strike, any other social hierarchy was seen as incorrect and unholy. Moreover, in response to the Pullman Strike the courts issued an injunction to prevent the continuation of the strike.
Drag has a rich history in society, and it was not always pleasant history. Before the 1960s, drag was essentially used for theater purposes back in the Shakespearian age, because women were not allowed to act in productions, so men dressed as women. The turning point of the LGBT rights movement was the Stonewall Riots in 1966 at the Stonewall Inn in New York.

INTRO Thesis: The Boston Busing Crisis was not a spontaneous event that created new tension around race throughout the city—it occurred in the context of very high levels of intolerance and inequality.
