The united states is one of the most empowered country’s from our economy, to our military, but like every other country we have our flaws. Our flaws are found in our judicial system. You can witness these flaws by watching the HBO series paradise lost, a documentary about the West Memphis three, a brutal killing of three West Memphis boys. This court case shows many flaws from the bias to the actual evidence the prosecution shows. In May of 1993, three West Memphis teenagers were arrested. Damien Echols, Jesse Miskelley, and Jason Baldwin had been arrested on the charged with the murder of three West Memphis boys Steve Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers, that were found in a creek in the middle of the woods brutally murdered, mutilated, …show more content…
After being arrested and brought in, then followed the countless hours of questioning, trying to persuade the boys to commit to a crime they never committed. After hours of being shown the dead boys pictures and being questioned Jesse Miskelley cracked, he admitted to seeing Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin kill the three kids, but claimed he had nothing to do with it. You will later find out in the court case the Jesse Miskelley has an extremely low IQ, on the border of mental retardation, and it is proven that if you have a low IQ, people can tend to make false accusation and just tell you what you want to hear. after hours of interrogation and being shown dead boys pictures its possible he just wanted to get out of there so he told the cops whatever they wanted to hear. Throughout the case there are many biases that create huge flaws in the case, such as how they dress, wearing all black, having black hair. People beleive its weird, because they wear what they were they can be capable of doing such a brutal murder. They also because that listening to heavy metal and reading horror story’s such as Stephen King makes you satanic, even though thousand of people wear black, listen to heavy metal, and read Stephen King. Does that make the rest of …show more content…
One big bias was the fact that Damien Echols was interested in learning about other religions as well as practicing them, especially the wicca religion. The wicca religion is focused upon a cult, or the study of witches. Besides the biases in the case, there was evidence and witnesses that were very unreliable. There was almost no evidence linking the three boys to this murder. The defence pointed out that the crime scene had no blood, no evidence that the boys were killed there, that means it would take someone that knows what they’re doing to either clean up the crime scene as well as it had been, which the boys were not smart enough or skilled enough to do that, or the possibility that the little boys were killed somewhere
Between the years 1979 and 1981, Wayne Williams is suspected to be the murderer of more than 20 youthful boys, although, he was only convicted of killing two adults both in Atlanta, Georgia. Even 30 years after his trail, there is still some debate and doubt, on whether or not he was Atlanta’s serial killer. After watching, Atlanta Child Murders, it’s believable Wayne Williams committed and caused the majority of these tragic deaths. By continuing to read, you will gather textual evidence as to why I believe Wayne William is guilty. To begin with, Eric Middlebrooks was the first victim to the Atlanta child murders.
Before the advancements in science and DNA discovery, there have been many men and woman executed for a crime he/ she did not commite. After DNA was discovered there have been cases where DNA has exonerated date row inmates. If DNA wasn't discovered many men and women would have been executed and if DNA testing was available earlier it would have easily proven that Cameron Todd Willingham, Corsicana, Texas was innocent.
The racism and hate that people of color faced is still alive today, it has actually increased. Because of Emmett Till and Vincent Chin’s appearances, they were savagely beaten and killed because of their race. Emmett Till was murdered for allegedly whistling at a white women. Vincent Chin was murdered because he was mistaken for being japanese.
The two were tried in court but were able to escape with no punishment even though they stated they did in fact kidnap Emmett Till. They both died later on with Emmett Till’s blood on their
The Mississippi Murders three CORE workers were killed in Mississippi in 1964. There names were Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner. They were killed by Sam Bowers,Cecil Price, and Edger Ray Killen. Sam bowers the head of KKK of Mississippi. Gave out the order for elimination of Michael Schwerner.
In 1995, Timothy McVeigh was responsible for making a bomb and blowing up a federal building in Oklahoma, which earned him the title of the most prolific mass murder in America (Saferstein, 2105). Using a moving truck to house and transport the bomb, he parked it at the federal building and simply walked away (Saferstein, 2105). Shortly after, the truck bomb exploded with such force, it killed 168 people and completely ruined the building (Saferstein, 2105). As fate would have it, he was stopped driving a vehicle by a state trooper for having no license plate later that same morning and arrested for transporting a firearm (Saferstein, 2105). This was fortunate for investigators to take custody of McVeigh after they discovered evidence that
The majority of people would never imagine they could be convicted of a crime which they did not commit, but all too often, this is the startling reality. Through the history of the United States and the world, excessively many decisions have been made rashly as a result of fear and bias. Two specific cases in the United States are those of the Red Scare and the West Memphis Three. While both situations did not lead to prosecution and conviction of individuals, both did involve harsh accusations which seemed reasonably based but may not have been. By comparing and contrasting these two events, one can see specific recurring patterns not only in the history of the United States, but in the history of the whole world; by seeing this, hopefully
The story regarding then seventeen year old Christopher Simmons is awful and I do not understand why people would abuse and torture people in the manner in which he did. According to the article, he had it in his mind that he just wanted to kill someone and it happened to be someone that he had prior contact with. No matter what state of mind he and the other juveniles were in, there was no excuse to treat Mrs. Crook the way that they did and murder her by throwing her off a bridge.

When people think of how government works, unless they’ve taken a government class, they usually think of Congress making laws and the President doing pretty much everything else. No one pays much attention to the Supreme Court unless there is a landmark case or something else to grab the news — like the recent death of Justice Antonin Scalia. But the Supreme Court does much more than you’d think regarding keeping the political machine running like a well-oiled … machine. Through not only interpretation of the law, but also judicial activism, the Supreme Court shows it can have as much influence over the laws of the land as either of the other branches of the federal government. In this paper, I will analyze the decision-making methods of the Court using the cases of Gideon v. Wainwright and Betts v. Brady.
I believe that if this was tried again that David Goodreau would still be found guilty. Only because when he confessed he knew certain things about the crime that ordinary people wouldn't known. There were defiantly problems with the investigation, Starting with the fact that the police didn't even peruse the murders of the two girls. Another problem with the investigation was that the police never really looked or found any evidence at the crime scenes. David Goodreau was sentenced to life in prison with out parole.
The definition of an expert is someone who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge in a particular area. What the experts said against the accused in these cases should not have been used as evidence because they were not truly experts in their field. Both cases left reasonable doubt that the accused did not commit the crimes they were accused of, and the courts in both cases still found the accused guilty of the crimes they were accused
The Scottsboro Boys story was about the boys that went to jail for a crime they didn’t commit, which is rape. Throughout their lives in jail they have gone through trials over and over again because people haven’t received justice. Justice is when the right thing or the fair thing has been accomplished. I think the boys have received their justice because throughout the years people have felt pity for the Scottsboro boys when they went through bad things, so they wanted to help them. People have been trying to help the boys to get their justice that they deserve.
The Atlanta Child Murders lasted two years with the death of 26 children ages from 8-14 to two young men one 23 the other 27. People all over the nation were wondering when the murders of these innocent people would stop, the murders were happening so frequent it would go to one case a month to one case a week and it was a spree of killing that people were hoping desperately it would end soon. The city eventually offers a $100,000 cash reward to anyone who could find the killer or killers, the media brought so much attention that even Muhammed Ali would help in this cause and add on to the bounty making it $500,000 after this Frank sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. would hold a concert to help raise money for the city of Atlanta to help with the investigation of this case and even President Ronald Reagan shedded light to this tragedy and ordered Vice President Bush to provide federal and local task forces to help with this case. Towards the last cases of children being kidnapped and murdered they were starting to be discovered in rivers and FBI suspected the bodies were being dumped at bridges so one FBI member recommended that they do stakeouts
According to The Innocence Project, 2 to 5 percent of people serving time in prisons are innocent. This means that of the United States’ 2.2 million prisoners, 44,000-110,00 of them are serving time for a crime they did not commit. Adnan Syed is one of those innocent people. His freedom was taken away from him as a highschooler at the age of 17. Blamed for the murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, Adnan was found guilty in his second trial because of casual friend and witness Jay Wilds.
