In Cold Blood is based on a true story. It tells of the murders of the clutter family. The family of 6 consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Clutter, their two teenage children, Kenyon and Nancy, and their two older daughters that were grown and out of the house. The family lived in Holcolm, Kansas and in November 1959, they were brutally killed in their own home by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, with no apparent motive. When the family was discovered, only small things were missing from their home,”...Dewey could not accept the theory that the family had been slaughtered for paltry profit -’a few dollars and a radio’”(Capote103). Dick and Perry initially get away with murder, but their clues that were left behind eventually catch up to them. In many parts …show more content…
The way the murder of the clutter family is described throughout the book is chilling and graphic “She’d been shot in the back of the head with a shotgun held maybe two inches away. She was lying on her side facing the wall and the wall was covered with blood”(Capote62). Many parents with this one quote already would probably not want their child to read this book but, with all the profanity in the book they forsure would not want their young child to read the novel. From the beginning profanity is used like, racial slurs ,”How about the nigger? Or did you? Kill him like you said? Sure I did. Only- a nigger it’s not the same”(Capote109). The parents responsible for the book being banned strongly believed that the book’s profanity and violence were not appropriate for children. Parents and Glendale Unified Officials sought to ban this book,”... the content of the non-fiction novel, which detail the brutal murder of a prosperous Kansas farmer and his family are apparently too macabre for some…” (latimes.com). In Savannah, Georgia parents also were the cause for the book to be banned in an English Advanced Placement class, “... a parent complained that it contained sex, violence, and profanity” (weebly.com). This book was mainly challenged by parents because they believed their children were not yet mature enough to handle the book’s
Society was an important dynamic in the novel Fahrenheit 451. In the novel, the dystopian society caused the country to burn books in result of warning reality at the time it was published. Why was this novel a warning to society? Society is the general public living together in a more or less ordered community. With the thought of a novel effecting America in this way, it was even banned due to profanity and had beliefs of going against certain religions.
Whether people in school are mature enough to read it and take all of the explicitcontent is up to them, and obviously they know what they’re getting into when they begin to readit. Having a book published and for people to read it and dislike it and ban it from certain places, must feel awful. I don’t think books should be banned in high school, obviously don’t allowelementary or middle school kids to read it, but it is his way of expressing himself. Humans tendto have a big issue on not judging when another is expressing their form of being, and this is acase where people may have gone a bit too
This book was something interesting because there are some facts that parents that feel that it need to be banned. But what these parents don’t understand is that since their children are in highschool they would already know what half of the content of the books mean and or are. The book Slaughterhouse Five many people think it should be banned but honestly the book shouldn't be banned there is so much more to the book that many people don't even understand . But in Missouri the book was banned for its profane language.
Ever since the day The Catcher in the Rye hit the shelves all the way back in 1951, it seems that it is constantly being attacked for having too much explicit content for adolescents. “In 1973 the American School Board Journal called The Catcher in the Rye the most widely censored book in the United States” (Whitfield). Yet a few years later, “By 1981, it was the second most taught book in the United States. Teenagers especially loved the book for what is taken as Holden Caulfield’s sponsorship of rebellion, combined with his promotion of drinking, smoking and sex” (McCrum). Most parents don’t think that it is a good idea for their children to read the book because they think the profanity in it will influence their children as it did for Mark David Chapman, John Hinckley, and Lee Harvey Oswald.
The ones who believe this novel should be banned say it is because of the use of the n-word and the overall racism towards African Americans.
Robert Cormier wrote The Chocolate War, inspired by his son who refused to sell chocolates in a school sale. The book was published in 1974 and garnered critical acclaim and notoriety. It was so reputable that a film adaptation of the novel followed in 1988. Although the movie was not as renowned as its literary counterpart, the two were destined for comparison as the author’s message was lost in the film adaptation of the novel. The book was more believable than its film adaptation because the movie’s alternate ending warped the main message, directorial choices changed the story’s credibility and its ending was illogical.
The novel Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson is one of the thousands of books that have been banned or challenged in the last 100 years. Written in 1977, the novel has been controversial due to the subject matters of the concept of death, inappropriate language, and religion. In classrooms and libraries all over the world, this book keeps on popping up on the banned-book list. It is because of these subjects in the book that people believe it teaches the readers, mostly younger kids, inadequate morals and sets bad examples for students. The novel Bridge to Terabithia should not be banned due to its informative subject topics and positive impact on readers of all ages.
Firstly it is said that media can alter one's mind, and saying this is true, many people say this book is violent and dark by having representations of Satan and other atrocious abominations. People in society say that books with any violent material like, but realistically speaking, there is no one way to decide what the standard is for violence. One author opposing book banning stated: Who decides precisely what speech is harmful to minors?.. Our diverse society is deeply divided over questions about sexual morality, race
Firstly, I believe it is reasonable to challenge this novel because it contains racial slurs. If students read them in a book, they may think that it is okay to use them as a result, so it is best to limit exposure to them. Also, this creates an issue for students who are reading the book aloud to a classroom, because others could be offended by the language. On the other hand, that is a part of American history, and the topic shouldn’t be completely avoided. A solution to this problem could be crossing out the slurs with permanent marker, so students won’t be reading them over and over
Stephen King’s Cujo is definitely not a book for all ages, but it is appropriate for students in high school. By the time you get to high school, you’ve already been exposed to foul language and violence. Reading this as a 10th grader, I had no challenge in reading the book, it was a fairly easy read and did not take very long to read. Swearing is used frequently throughout the novel, maybe even excessively in some scenes. In particular, almost every time Gary Pervier speaks he swears.
What if I told you that you couldn’t read your favorite book just because it was considered “inappropriate”? I believe that The Chocolate War should not be banned anywhere and all middle schoolers should be free to read it. I think so because middle schoolers are old enough to read it, it was written to be read by others so it shouldn’t be kept from people, and kids can learn valuable life lessons from it.
Imagine you are in front of a class, teaching To Kill a Mockingbird to a group of high-schoolers. Over the course of the unit, your students praise the book, saying that it educated them about racial tensions in the South and the meaning of bravery among other important life lessons. However, you still receive numerous strongly-worded phone calls and emails from angry parents demanding the literary classic be removed from the curriculum for containing the word “nigger” and rape. You don’t understand – how can a novel of such significance and acclaim be condemned just for including a couple of pages with adult themes? The answer is censorship.
Lots of parents and businesses think that books should be banned, do you? I am for banning books because I feel that books should not talk about homosexuality, drugs, alcohol, smoking, nudity etc. Books should be banned due to bad language and bad content. I feel like bad words shouldn 't be allowed in books because kids learn things from books and if it has bad words and bad content in them unfortunately kids will learn inappropriate things. Books should be banned if they have PDA especially with two people of the same gender.
The book does discuss some controversial themes which is most likely the reason for the book being banned as often as it is in schools. The book should be read by readers of an appropriate mindset and maturity
The book was banned at Dr. John Long Middle School by cause of mentions of masturbation, graphic sexual references, slang terms
