Throughout history, music has been a vital piece of culture. With music, censorship of it coincides. For America, this has been the case, especially with the invention of radios in the early 1900s which aided the development of widespread music in the nation. However, not all music is meant to be broadcasted for each and every listener of radio to hear. It is because of this that censorship of music on the radio is so necessary for a country with the potential it has to thrive. To start off, censorship is a controversial issue which dates back to ancient times, in ancient cultures for a multitude of reasons. However in America recently, older persons have tried to limit, filter, and censor what the youth have had access to. This includes print …show more content…
Popular artists who produce certain types of music have been known to get sucked into to the dangers of using drugs, and it is reflected in their music. Snoop Dogg released a song titled “Smoke Weed Everyday,” in which he says “Hey hey hey. Smoke weed everyday.” Teens are known to give in to peer pressure as well as try to be cool, and when artists they admire start promoting drugs, how do you think it affects them? According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “About 570,000 people die annually in the U.S. due to drug use.” That is 570,000 people in America alone. Music on the radio can’t inspire children, teens, or anybody to essentially throw away their life and kill …show more content…
Censoring music on the radio does not mean that music is unavailable on other streaming platforms, because if one truly wanted to music, they could find it elsewhere. Music censorship, in actuality, is protecting the people of the country. It is stopping the spread of dangerous ideas. It is saving people’s lives. Therefore there is no reason that music shouldn’t be censored on the radio. If one truly wants to “hear real music” which is what F@%*K Censorship describes uncensored music, they can hear it on a platform that unlike the radio, promotes people to ruin their
Reynolds notes that the systematic removal of any aspects of history that may tarnish the 20th century promotion of history. Similarly in TEDxYouth, Mac Roj Talks of the directed censorship of media by government agencies like the FCC. He says that censorship like this is removing the meaning and effect of the composer’s material and the words lose meaning, reducing the full potential of its impact on the directed audience. He uses contrasts this idea with a painter, as it is like taking a brush they’ve just painted a masterpiece with and telling them the redo it. He talks of the false façade these companies create and by censoring this content society becomes
Censorships is harmful to people when it comes to communicating with each other which is demonstrated by Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451. People in the society do not communicate with each other like that use to. The society moves at such a fast pace “ a green blur, a pink blur, brown blurs are cows” (9) which is shown by how the people describe different objects. People in the society consider someone anti-social if they talk and ask questions which demonstrates it is not normal to socialize. In the society people are not suppose to ask why something is done they are supposed to just go along with everything.
There are different types of censorship like schools banning books and people vandalizing art they deem as offensive. Certain cities must create an insurance policy and warning for artists because so many people destroy their work. Under the article Vandalism by Pauline Barrier, she states that in the United States, “All art shown under a Council's auspices… should be insured so that there is some sort of way in which to help artists repair their work if damage does occur” (2). It is terrible that for someone to express their art freely they must have it extra protected and insured. Censoring the works of very imaginative artists destroys the uniqueness and individuality our society holds.
How Censorship Impacts Everyone Censorship is a very broad topic, and many consider it harmful to both them as well as others. It goes all the way back to when literature was first developed. Many different people had different opinions on certain things so they chose to challenge it. Censorship has directly affected many authors because it is the censoring of common books that have disturbing or misleading information in them that often offends someone or even a group of people. The information in them is the root of it all.
Censorship is detrimental to most people around the world’s well-being because it limits the free flow of information and can inhibit mental maturity. In a 2012 New York Times article, journalist
In the modern day all sorts of information are censored by our government. The reason why information gets censored can vary. Sometimes things are just generally inappropriate for some audiences and other things people shouldn’t know. But sometimes the information gets censored for no apparent reason. For example, all kinds of books are banned from school.
Government censorship is a thing that is always being in use for quite a while. Government censorship is in a lot of things. There are more than one different type of censorship. The government censors these things in different ways. There is censorship in books, media, the internet, and more.
In conclusion Censorship has played a very effective role in society, government and our social media, but it’s affecting a lot more than just that. What role does censorship play in America and what guidelines should be used to ban books, videos, and articles written produced for public
First we should define censorship in order to discuss its effects and purposes. The Oxford English Dictionary defines censorship as, “The suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.” In this case we are mostly concerned with the censorship of “politically unacceptable” literature. However, Anaya states that reasons such as vulgarity can be used as excuses to ban politically challenging literature.
As reviewed in class, many adult Americans used to think that Rock and Roll and it’s exponents were a “bad influence” to teenagers back on the days. It is important to point out that many social changes on that time were a result of sociocultural modifications around authority figures like the government, parents, school authorities, etc. With the influence of Rock and Roll, people started to question topics like: religion, politics, social structures and sexual statements and teens showed attitudes against any form of authority that tried to control them. After World War II, adolescents showed more violent attitudes against social statements at that time.
The idea surrounding censorship should not be avoided since it can give readers a better understanding of the consequences that comes with it. Avoiding the discussion surrounding censorship can leave a negative impact on people, especially young teenagers. This can be justified in the article, "Censoring Student Newspapers: An Overview" as the author argues that "Censorship prevents students from debating controversial issues in an open forum and does not prepare them to graduate beyond school and into life as an adult citizen, nor does it allow them to freely discuss the realities of teenage life" (Aliprandini and McMahon). Banning the book is similar to censorship as both prevent readers from viewing a published medium or book. This limits one 's construction of knowledge, ideas, and imagination.
Over the years rap culture has changed from being motivational to a negative industry. The more time teens spend watching videos put them further at risk as they are more likely to engage in careless or in some cases illegal activities. Once known as a inspirational outlet and a way for people to express their everyday struggles rap has since become extremely controversial and deceptive to the youth. One of the biggest negative effects rap music has is the promotion of drug sells and usage.
Censorship can be described as the act of cutting out certain material that can be considered obscene or inconvenient for the community. This material can be found in social media such as in the TV, radio, or the internet. Censorship can be challenged because of the first amendment: freedom of speech. Free expression is the right of expressing opinions and ideas without any fear of being restrained or censored. However, freedom of speech does not include the right to incite actions that would harm others or the distribution of obscene material (Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, 2000).
Hip Hop music effects college students’ attitudes, perspectives, and visualization of reality. “The content of popular music, including but not limited to hip-hop, may have a negative impact on kids' behavior according to certain studies” (pubs.niaaa.nih.gov). Hip Hop music plays a significant part on college students’ behavior. College students will possibly have behavioral changes due to the fact of drugs and alcohol being used by their Hip Hop role
Parker-Pope (2008) goes on to illustrate that the drug and substance references within song lyrics percentage has significantly increased. “Music is well-known to connect deeply with adolescents and to influence identity development, perhaps more than any other entertainment medium (Parker-Pope, 2008). Based on Parker-Pope’s comments is the music industry and their depiction of drug abuse influencing youth and not deterring them? Based on the song ““Amphetamine Annie” the message clearly is to discourage and not glorify the use of
