In An Empire for Slavery: The Peculiar Institution in Texas, 1821-1865 Randolph B. Campbell discusses the institution or empire of slavery in Texas from early 1821 until its somewhat conclusion in 1865. In Campbell’s book he provides readers with a look at the slavery existence in the state of Texas and how it was an empire that was a major part of Texas’s growth and history. Throughout the book Campbell explores many different aspects of the slave institution throughout the many cities and counties in Texas. Campbell discusses the perplexing economic impact of slavery, the relationship between slave and slave master, the life of a Texas slave and delves into the physical and psychological effects of both slaves and their masters preceding the Civil War.

The New York Historical Society (n.d.) states, “historically New York has been considered the capital of American liberty, hosting monuments devoted to freedom and promoting economic ambition as well as diversity; however, it is also, paradoxically, the capital of American slavery.” Slavery in New York started in the 1600s when the Dutch West India Company brought African slaves to what is today New York (GSA, n.d.). Slavery is traced back to 1792 B.C.E and was a common practice that is used in ways to benefit the owner so he could get more work done throughout their daily life but even when the beginning of civilization ended, people still used slaves, as they were easily forced to meet the demands of the people. Therefore, slavery during civilization times had limits which changed drastically once the era of exploration and discovery came due to economic and cultural expansion that caused their relationship, extent, and nature to have a an entirely different meaning. At the beginning civilization, slavery became present, and there was a relationship to be made between the slaves and owners. The use of slaves has always been present in the world since the beginning of civilization, although the use and treatment of those slaves has differed widely through time and geographic location. Different geographies call for different types of work ranging from labor-intensive sugar cultivation and production in the tropics to household help in less agriculturally intensive areas. In addition to time and space, the mindsets and beliefs of the people in those areas affect how the slaves will be treated and how “human” those slaves will be perceived to be. According to PBS, slavery played an important role in the Roman Society. Most slaves during the Roman Empire were foreigners and, unlike in modern times, Roman slavery was not based on race (“The Roman Empire in the First Century: Slaves & Freemen”). The life of a slave was quiet harsh. They were often whipped, branded or maltreated. Their masters could easily kill them for any reason, and would not get punished for it (“The Roman Empire in the First Century: Slaves & Freemen”).

People that owned slaves were mostly planters, yeoman, and whites. A slave is a person who is legal property of another and is forced to obey and that 's exactly what slaves did, they obeyed every command. Slaves were used for a lot of things in the 1800s. Slave women were usually used for cooking, cleaning, and helped with planter’s children.

How did slaves affect the daily Roman economy? Introduction Inspired by the Greeks, the Romans instituted slavery on a widespread scale throughout their empire (Scheidel, 2010, p.2). Some scholars place the percentage of slaves in the entire population of the Roman Empire as high as 33% (Kamm, 2009a). Slavery also affected all societies because of the kind of people that would be the ones to purchase the slaves. Normally it was the people that had money, and they were the ones that would buy the slaves and force them to work. Slavery was a big part of the economy back then because of the things that were being grown. For example, a lot of slaves worked on farms that grew tobacco, cotton, and sugar cane. The Southern states got to be the states that these supplies came from and were most known for.

One of the greatest weaknesses that lead to the fall of the Western Roman Empire are the barbarian invasions. When the Roman soldiers were moved from the Rhine-Dhanube frontier to fight on civil wars in Italy, the Roman borders were left open to attacks. Not so long after Constantine moved Rome’s capitol, Germanic barbarians-people Romans considered uncivilized- began to raid and take over Roman lands in Greece and Gaul. Historians believe that the tribes actually started settling along the borders around 200s. Odavacer (a barbarian leader) takes over by overthrowing the last of the Roman emperors and made himself the ruler of Italy.

The scope of slavery varied based on how practical and profitable slaves would be in that time period and location. Slavery had many impacts on society as a whole and influenced political, economic, and cultural aspects which all demonstrate the development of slavery in the 17th and 18th century. By the 17th century many Indians had been killed off by diseases and many white indentured servants no longer were willing to work (Foner, pg. 94). At first, the majority of slaves were sent to Brazil and the West Indies with less than 5% sent to the colonies (Foner, pg. 98).

Slavery, is the condition in which a human being is owned and controlled by another. This institution has deep roots in human history. It was practiced in most of the world, from prehistoric times to the modern era. Despite this commonality, slave systems have varied considerably. Societies have experienced different degrees of it, with different practices and different outlooks, even though the basic characteristic was the same.
