I have a lot of experience in leadership especially since I started JROTC and have moved up in it in only two years. I have learned many different skills that a leader needs to have, and I have put many of those skills into practice. I have helped organize events and run entire events with the help of a team. The reason that I feel that leadership and service go hand in hand is the fact that you can’t serve without having qualities that a good leader needs to have. You need to be able to take responsibility if you are going to serve.

My leadership philosophy is a merger of my family and Military concepts of what it means to be an effective leader. My grandmother, a mother of 9 and grandmother of 27, was the heartbeat of our family. She instilled in us the values of hard work, trust and accountability. “You work hard and great things will happen”, “if people do not trust they won’t believe anything you say and nothing you say will matter”, and “when you make a mistake admit it, apologize and try to move on.” These particular quotes, amongst others, were constants in my grandparent’s home and in turn are a part of the foundation of my own leadership philosophy.

This definition of Leadership is best restated by my very own father “A person can demonstrate leadership skills even when not in a leadership position.” Throughout my high school years so far, I have demonstrated leadership mostly in the field of Boy Scouting in two different Troops. I started out my leadership trail in Boy Scouting by becoming a Troop Scribe who as per se the Boy Scout Handbook, 2016 Edition “The Scribe attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings. He records attendance and dues payments of all troop members and records advancement in troop records and on the troop advancement chart.” After that, I ascended into becoming a Patrol Leader and then acting as a Senior Patrol Leader, the highest youth leader of the troop, handling all patrols’ affairs and coordinating with the Scoutmaster for advice and consent.

First and foremost, leaders come in all shapes and forms, there is not one set physical mold for them, but what they all do share are certain characteristics and desires. Leadership in and of itself, is the ability to guide others, take responsibility, and share a vision that inspires and leaves others with a sense of empowerment. There are instances where you will lead diverse groups, and your method of approach to a situation can contradict the values and morals of a different person. If you decide to not recognize and accept these different beliefs, then it can be very dangerous, as people will decide not to follow you. Instead, if you accept these beliefs, not only will you being getting a greater understanding of different beliefs, but you have the capability to inspire, motivate, and earn the trust of your subordinates.

Burnout is associated with bad self perception of health and a huge quantity of somatic complaints (Buunk BP, Schaufeli WB (1999). Burnout is same in all individuals with changed dimension of symptoms. In the context of classical definition of burnout, it includes the dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism and professional inefficacy. This points to the fact that exercises in self-development and discipline were key to building leadership qualities. Leaders as mentioned before are role-models in society and when those leadership qualities are nurtured, the society as a whole benefits from them.
