A few generation ago the family were owned by a white slave owners whose last name were the Sutters. Some people in town believe one of the sutter’s was the one who set fire to a box car killing Berniece and Willie Boy’s dad Papa Boy Charles after he had stolen the piano from their house. Legend also said one was killed by the ghost of the people the sutter killed when setting fire to the box car when he was pushed into a well and drowned. In Harry Justin's passage five he talks about the importance of Boy Charles taking back the piano. Elam writes “ Rather than submitting to the hegemony of sutter and the painful legacy of slavery, Papa Boy Charles liberates the piano and is willing to face death as the price of his action” (p.g #373- 374) here he talks the piano being an object that represents freedom of his family’s past which includes freeing themselves from the Sutter home after slavery was abolished in the U.S. Boy Charles reclaims the family history through appropriating the piano, Boy Willie hopes to further his father’s goals by buying the land. Hence the fact that he really wants to sell the
have a great relationship with Boy Willie. Once Lymon notices the piano and tells Boy Willie, this is where the drama begins. Boy Willie tells Lymon that he wants to sell the piano because he thinks it is worth a lot of money. Doaker already knows that Berniece will not let him sell the piano because of the significance it has within the family. Another reason Berniece does not want to sell the piano is because her daughter, Maretha, is learning how to play it.

In the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines, Grant is a main character that has a lot of influence over the people in his community. Some might even consider him a hero. I believe that Grant is a hero because he helps Jefferson become a man, changes himself for the better, and wants to continue changing the community. Over the course of the novel, Grant helps Jefferson become the man that he needs to be in order to walk to his death with honor. When Grant first begrudgingly went to visit Jefferson in prison Jefferson was in a really low state.
Thank you.” Bernice comes to terms with her family’s past, through her actions and acceptance of the piano and the history behind it. She changes from having this anger towards the piano and her brother to developing an acceptance towards his actions and playing a song upon the piano once more. This acceptance leads to a harmony between her and her brother from the previous blame of her husband’s death and a higher harmony for the entire Charles family after Sutter’s spirit is
I did my character analysis on uncle willie. I chose uncle willie because he has a different life than the other characters in the book. Uncle willie’s background is not normal because back in the day white people treated black people different. On page 10 uncle willie’s background is different because he was born with different abilities than a normal person. On page 10 uncle willie takes care of kids.
On page 50, when Boy Willie and Lymon are trying to move the piano to get a sense of how hard it would be to take out the house, Sutter’s ghost is heard. “As they start to move the piano, the sound of Sutter's Ghost is heard” p. (50). This quote leads me to believe that Sutter's Ghost has some affiliation with the piano. There are multiple sightings of Sutter throughout the play, but the first one was Doaker.

This ends up being a bad decision on the King’s part because soon after the real brothers show up and the King and Duke must leave without any money, not even the already stolen six thousand. Twain uses the King’s greed to represent the southerners who did not want to give up slavery because they would lose money from it. In the end, slaves were freed and hundreds of plantations and southern properties were destroyed during the Civil War. One critic even wrote, “ Huck has to keep moving,
In this relationship, Willie’s mum encouraged Willie to be a priest. Although Willie did not want to be a priest he also wanted to impress his mum and not let her down. Willie did this because he is kind, and this is a quality that their relationship brought to Willie’s identity. Willie’s mum shipped him off to a boarding school for priests and while Willie was there he got really homesick which means he loves home more than anywhere else. Some evidence that Willie loved home was that in the Van he was singing about home which is Broome.
