Rose Hernandez Professor Flowers History 106 15 October 2015 The Progressive Era In the 1920s, America entered a new movement that dealt with finding solutions to society’s problems. Fair wages for the working class, better living standards for the working and poor, and rights for women were hot button issues that Progressives tried to fix. During that time, books such as Bellamy’s Looking Backward and Riis’s How the Other Half Lives exposed what they considered was the main problem that caused America’s social problems. Both authors wanted to shed light on what they have witnessed and give out solutions to repair the damage society suffered from. The Progressive Era was all about change, and Bellamy and Riis wanted to change the minds of …show more content…
In Bellamy’s book, crimes rarely happened in the twentieth century due to everyone having a job they were proud of having. As the poor suffered, the upper class continued to live a life of luxury and sought ways to take advantage of the poor by either paying them less when it came to work or charging them more when it came to paying for rent. Political conditions in both books showed how countries weren’t getting along due to World War I and people who worked in the government didn’t listen nor cared to what the citizens needed. In Bellamy’s book, nations were in peace with each other, there was no more need of state government, and America’s government only goal is to give wealth and good health to its citizen in the century Julian was in. In Riis’ book, he mentioned how the Board of Health weren’t very active with the housing condition problem. The B.O.H. were aware of the problems but they couldn’t find ways, until towards the end of …show more content…
Economic conditions at the time were also terrible. The poverty level was at a whole time high and wages were very low. Workers were still on strikes demanding unions and higher wages; meanwhile the poor were suffering from starvation, sickness, and poor living conditions due to either no jobs or wages not being enough to live on. The salaries people were getting paid with were not enough to sustain on. In Bellamy’s book, he mentioned how wages weren’t unfair and only the educated or rich had well paid jobs, but in twentieth century, everyone had jobs with fair hours, capital was nationally owned, goods and products were made by the nation as well as only sold in big stores, no more business competition, and America’s wealth was shared equally among the citizens. In Riis’s book, the immigrants were under paid and were forced to work longer hours, and children were forced drop out of school to work along the side adults. Cultural conditions were hard when it come to women and immigrants. Women had lower salaries
The 1920s had both negative and positive effects, not just one or the other it depends on how you look at it. The 1920s was a time after WW1 when America thrived, new inventions were being developed that made everyday life more efficient. Women had just gained the right to vote, and equality in America was moving forward. Most were financially stable, and it was a time when most were carefree and happy.
Progressivism, a broad idea of hopes to bring change in the social and political lives of Americans, arose around the year 1900. During this time, the social structure had troubles; for instance, female reformers organizations formed in hopes to protect women and children, the middle class felt threatened by businesses, and the contribution to political and economic decisions from all classes was inexistent. To counteract the conditions of nineteenth century American life, Jane Addams and other settlement house workers worked directly toward creating a more equitable social structure. Thus, they shaped American Progressivism by reconstructing the function of democracy to include disenfranchised Americans through prompting social and political
Throughout the history of America, we as a nation have gone through many unique time periods. Whether it was during the colonial times where we fought for revolution or during the age of Manifest Destiny where we migrated West to fulfill our destiny or when we were battling through the Great Depression to fix and stabilize our economy all of these different times we have been through still bears an impact on our society as a whole today. A time period in specific I will be talking about is the Roaring 20s. The 1920s was an era of social and political change which sent America into the modern age, where for the first time Americans actually lived more in cities than farms. Along with that America itself doubled their total wealth in the span
Dear Aunt Bessie, Out of all your family members you have decided to choose me to get the one million dollars but I was stunned and nervous of this big task you have held upon me. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to help the world. The Progressivism era started in 1900 's. The Progressivism started after a little war with Spain in 1900 's. The muckrakers did a wonderful job reveling the secrets of the progressive era.
The Progressive Era was a time of far reaching social activism and political change over the United States, from the 1890s to 1920s. The primary goal of the Progressive development was dispensing with defilement in government. The development essentially focused on political machines and their supervisors. By bringing down these degenerate delegates in office a further method for direct vote based system would be set up. They likewise looked for direction of restraining infrastructures (Trust Busting) and organizations through antitrust laws.
Aside from sharing diverging views on various views on various issues, both sources tended to agree during certain instances. Both the novel and the textbook talk about the hardships of social stratification and the rich people’s exploitation of the poor. They both agree on the fact that the treatment of the factory workers was brutal and that the factory owners were in some way corrupt. Both the textbook and the novel strongly support their views. For instance, another key movement of the post reconstruction time was the formation of Labor Unions and the start of the Populist Party.
The Progressive Era in the United States was a period of time during the 1890’s-1920’s where a huge wave of immigrants arrived to this country. As a result, there was a rapid growth in urbanization and industrialization in America. Soon, landlords created tenement slum with unhealthy sanitary conditions. Meanwhile, big industries are taking advantage and monopolizing America’s finances. It wasn’t until Ida Tarbell exposed a big oil company’s unfair business practices.
America in the 1920’s in some respects was comparable to a young adult going off to college. This is the first time the young adult has had no adult supervision and has full autonomy. America following World War I presented a similar idea. The country was ripe with new technology and ideas, all of which would lead to the eventual downturn of the nation. The emergence of the radio was significant in two respects for it not only showcased the rate at which technological development was evolving but it also allowed for the free and large scale spread of ideas.
The progressive era which lasted from 1890-1920 in American society was the institution of radical reforms brought about by the millions of Americans involved in volunteer organizations across the country. During this time Americans worked to create solutions to the problems caused by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country. The progressive era was not a single movement, but rather a collection of movements all of which were intended to improve the lives of Americans. This was a truly remarkable time for women and the end of the era would see almost universal women’s suffrage with the passing of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.
The excerpt relates to the historical context the novel was written in, due to the event occurring in the excerpt is relevant to the great depression, and dust bowl era. To illustrate, the landowners, and the wealthy in the passage eliminated the resources the poor needed in order to survive, such as food in order to maintain their profits high, and keep the migrants desiring to have a job, in return for nearly nothing. Similarly, this event relates to how during in the Great Depression the landowners paid extremely low wages to their workers, due to the prodigious amount of workers available, and the few jobs available. Furthermore, the Great Depression led to an immense amount of people unemployed, and desire to work in order to survive,
America experienced a sudden disregard of Victorian values following World War I, causing the generation of the 1920s to dramatically contrast the previous. This severe degree of change produced three major manifestations of the contradictions in the twenties. There were massive conflicts to the Jazz Age, technological advancements, and Black Migration. The contradictions of the 1920s reflect America’s conflicted state between advancement and convention, as the cultural and technological developments of the era coincide with the inability of individuals to stray from traditional norms and racist attitudes.
Jane Addams The Progressive Era, 1890-1920, accomplished great change in the Unites States of America. One of the main activits during this time was Jane Addams. Jane Addams is often refered to as a social and political pioneer.
This book shows why and how it was to live during these times. Tom Robinson was the main person being discriminated in the book but this was going on everywhere at
During the progressive era, there were many organization’s that arose to better the American society. Two Progressive reforms that sought to help women were the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and the Women Suffrage Association. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union or WCTU was founded in November 1874 in Cleveland, Ohio by Frances Willard and Annie Turner Wittenmeyer. This organization's purpose was to educate people about the dangers of alcohol, and eventually prohibit alcohol distribution in America. The Women’s Suffrage Association was founded in New York City in 1869 by Women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
It also was harsh for every slave that had to work every day till the sun goes down and even the children that were at least 10 had to work. As stated in the text, ''Between 1830 and 1860, life under slavery became even more difficult because the slave codes—the laws in the Southern states that controlled enslaved people—became more severe.'' , that basically describes their whole amount of their slavery life that they suffered so much. But some people fought against slavery even thought it was slightly impossible to do that. I still oppose slavery in the South because all these things they went through is so terrible and no matter what I wouldn't want any slavery for anyone because I know for a fact that I wouldn't want to be treated like a
