In recent years there has been a lot of discussion on weather Marijuana is harmful or not, and weather the pros out weigh the cons. The public opinion leans towards: no, it’s not harmful and should become legal. However, most of the people who are pro marijuana don’t have scientific evidence to support their claims; they just enjoy being high. There are some good reasons to why someone would smoke marijuana, and there are reasons why it should not be allowed. Due to brain development in teenagers, they are two to four times more likely to become addicted than users who begin in adulthood; one in every six teenage user becomes addicted. An estimated 2.7 million people who are 12 or older depend on the daily use of marijuana (New England Journal of Medicine). There have been studies conducted that compare adults who smoked …show more content…
It was discovered that those who did smoke marijuana have impaired neural connectivity in certain areas of the brain. A region in the brain that Marijuana effects directly is the precuneus region; this region is responsible for a person’s ability to be alert or aware of things going on around them. Marijuana has been known to decrease these two essential processes. Marijuana also affected the fimbria, an area of the brain that is vital to learning and retaining memory (New England Journal of Medicine). These negative effects on the brain have been noticeable to those adults who began using during their adolescent years. This proves that THC, the main ingredient of marijuana, has a very negative connotation on brain development. Marijuana does extremely well in alleviating pain in medical patients. THC, the main ingredient of marijuana, is FDA approved and is used in several other pain
Marijuana has had a significant amount of medical breakthroughs in its ability to help treat many diseases and disorders such as, glaucoma muscle spasms and even anorexia and bulimia. However, despite these many medical advances, there still lay many controversies surrounding the topic. Marijuana supporters argue that the drug should be used in medicine and be legalized for recreational purposes; on the other hand, those against marijuana argue that it is a gateway drug and should not be used in medicine or recreationally.
There are many people who argue that marijuana should be legal for medical purposes. In fact, a growing number of states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Marijuana contains delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main ingredient in marijuana that makes people ‘high’, that may help treat a range of illnesses and symptoms such as increasing one’s appetite and reducing nausea. It can also decrease pain, inflammation, and muscle control problems (Abuse, National Institute on Drug). Furthermore, the chemical cannabidiol (CBD), another ingredient in marijuana, but it does not get people ‘high’, could potentially help reduce pain and inflammation, control epileptic seizures, and possibly treat mental illness and
Marijuana use is found in young adults (18-24) which most of them are linked to college students. There are many ways Marijuana can affect a human body, ways that many people do not know about Marijuana can affect brain areas that influence pleasure ,memory, thinking, concentration, movement, coordination, and sensory and time perception.(Drugabuse.org). One of the most well designed studies on marijuana and intelligence, released in 2012, found that persistent, heavy use of marijuana by adolescents reduces IQ by as much as eight points, when tested well into adulthood. Other studies have found that marijuana use is linked with dropping out of school, and subsequent unemployment, social welfare dependence, and a lower self-reported quality of life than non-marijuana abusing people. According to the U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health, youth with poor academic results were more than four times as likely to have used marijuana in the past year as youth with an average of higher grades. This is consistent with an exhaustive meta-analysis examining forty-eight different studies by Macleod and colleagues, published by Lancet, who found that marijuana use is consistently associated with reduced grades and a reduced chance of graduating from school. In addition, studies have linked employee marijuana use with “increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover.”
The AMA (American Medical Association) feels that our national negative view of the drug is based on only misinformation. It is time for these theories to be debunked. Glaucoma and Cancer are not the only illnesses that marijuana is beneficial for. It is also beneficial for other diseases such as Migraine Headaches, Multiple Sclerosis, AIDS, Asthma, Arthritis, Paraplegia, Quadriplegia, Epilepsy, and many more. Our government’s (Drug Enforcement Agency) judge ruled that “marijuana is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man.”
Cannabis also can be a curable and more natural drug to help people in pain. Marijuana can also raise economic struggle, lower crime rate and make more jobs for many jobless people. However researchers believe that medical marijuana is still bad for people’s health. Both sides have reasonable arguments, but the pros are more than the cons. This paper has
This is a youth leaders blog called, “19 Primary Pros and Cons of Legalizing Weed.” This is an anonymous blog and the authors who contributed listed a few reasons on why marijuana is not always the greatest, and they initiate with the common factor, addictive nature. Supporters of marijuana legalization have disputed that pot is not as addictive as other hardcore drugs, ones such as heroin and cocaine, but people who have specialized in addiction treatment have come to the conclusion that yes after a long period of use, it usually does lead to addiction. Some addictions can be a good thing but in the case of drugs, it’s usually not and can lead to very bad situations. The next thing the bloggers mention is altered perception.
Marijuana comes from a plant called “Cannabis sativa”, which comes from Central Asia but is now grown all over the world. I will also be discussing, the effects of the drug has on a person’s neurotransmitters, physiological, and psychological state. After doing some reading and research, I have learned that Marijuana does not affect any exact neurotransmitters in the body. However, the drug does “disrupt the membranes of neurons and affects the functioning of a variety of neurotransmitters and hormones.”
With many states legalizing recreational marijuana, it can seem like kids smoking weed is a non-issue. In reality, marijuana serves as a gateway drug to more addictive, more harmful substances. In addition, kids smoking weed can lead to problems with the way that their brain develops. The human mind does not stop forming until the mid-20s, so early marijuana use can inhibit the mind 's ability to function. Why Kids Smoking Weed Is a Problem

Seizures are four times more likely in marijuana users and two people have died from overdose. When compared to adults, teenagers are twice as likely to get addicted. Marijuana is now being sold in food, making it more accessible to younger people. According to the Journal of Neuroscience, high amounts of marijuana the higher one anxiety levels get. In marijuana, the THC is what gives one the “high” and that “high” leads to mental impairment.
Also many patients have reported that the usual prescribed pain medications given to them by their doctors do little to almost nothing to help take away their pain. So for many people, marijuana is one of the only things able to give them relief from the pain caused by their illnesses, and the fact that this drug is so far out of reach to suffering patients is wrong. One of the biggest advantages of medical marijuana is that it is all natural, and all the chemicals in it are naturally produced by growing the plant and extracting the chemicals from
The level of opioid overdoses is so high right now”This shows that marijuana is a lot safer than using pills or opioids, and risking to overdose while there has been no victims that overdosedon marijuana. This is important because marijuana can be a legal drug that can lower deaths from overdoses. According to Jennifer Landis a recent study suggests that marijuana could be an effective way to reduce migraine headaches.
This study also showed that people who had starting using marijuana in their adult years did not show any signs of an IQ decline. This should be recognized because there is an age limit to obtain a medical marijuana card which is 18 years old in most cases, but in severe cases such as a child cancer patient they will in severe cases let them have low dosages of marijuana. Now considering there is an age limit and a dosage on medical marijuana there will be no chance for a person to get any type of brain damage because they will be fully developed and meeting the criteria of a medical marijuana
Marijuana is one of the plants that has both positive and negative side effects for the users. Most people have considered marijuana as a taboo, but the truth is, marijuana is not always illegal; it has been used by our ancestors since ancient times, as a traditional medicine. It has also been proven from laboratory research that marijuana can cure various diseases, including nerve-related disease. Therefore, the use of marijuana should not be regarded as controversial, but as an alternative treatment, especially for the nerve system.
