He eventually left the life of politics for quite a while. Moving West to the badlands he went to be a cattle rancher, deputy sheriff, historian, naturalist, explorer, author of 35 books, police commissioner, assistant Secretary of the Navy, war hero, and lawyer. Later in Wilsons life he became the governor of New Jersey for two years but was elected for president in 1912 (Life Before Presidency).
