In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America. Historiography is used in order to classify written works of historical content. There are five unique schools of historiography, each with its own criteria and qualities. The schools are used in order to better understand a written material by categorizing its content and the author’s approach to writing. Classifying a school can also be helpful in examining the writings strengths and weaknesses. Though nationalist historiography usually includes writings from the 1800-1900, and A Voyage Long and Strange, was written in 2008, the main themes of the school still apply to the …show more content…
As the goal of the writer was to educate, the book achieved success in both ways as the reader is left much more informed about early America than when they began reading the novel. The book covers the its main topics in three sections, Discovery, Conquest and Settlement. Each section includes information from various geographical regions in America with information pertaining to one of the specific sections above. Changes in the Land” is a book about the study’s done by William and the impacts on the environment and inhabitants of early New England done by the Europeans settling in. In his thesis Cronon claims, “the shift from Indian to European dominance in New England entailed important changes well known to historians in the ways these peoples organized their lives, but it also involved fundamental reorganizations less well known to historians in the region’s plant and animal communities” (Cronon 15). Cronon uses different evidence that he gathered up to display the conditions following the Europeans coming in contact with the new land.

There are two journeys that everyone is surely to be acquainted with: the Christopher Columbus voyage to America and Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic Ocean. There are similarities that are very visible to the basic mind. However, there are also major contradictions, differences, and changes that took place within the 400 year time gap. Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the “new world” changed the world dramatically, opened a doorway of discoveries, and changed mankind forever. Accomplishing this feat was almost impossible for the desperate Christopher Columbus.
It was October 12, 1492 when Christopher Columbus arrived in the new world and it is also the day in which citizens of the United States celebrate this cultivated man. Many see Columbus as the hero that discovered America, but countless people only know that one perspective. Howard Zinn, the author of Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress deepens the story of Columbus sailing the ocean blue and exhibits a whole different outlook on the events that took place. Zinn’s eloquent depiction spawned interest everywhere due to the graphic and unique portrayal of the so-called 1400’s hero. The first chapter of both APeople’s History of the United States (Zinn, 1980) andA Patriot’s History of the United States(Schweikart and Allen, 2004) tells the story of the discovery of the New World. Beginning with the landing of Columbus in the Bahamas, these accounts are told from two separate perspectives. Zinn often refers to the telling of history as a tale between victims and executioners, saying that in the “inevitable taking of sides which comes from selection and emphasis in History” he prefers to stand on the side of the victim, whereas Schweikart and Allen tend to stand behind the executioner. Much of APatriot’s Historyis spent arguing the accuracy of the number of natives murdered by invading European entities, attempting to minimize the blame reflected on these executioners.
“Myth is an arrangement of the past” (Wright 2009) our entire idea of North America’s history is based on stories. Stories of travel, war, treasure hunts, death and appropriation of land. In Ronald Wrights book Stolen Continents, Wright argues that the stories we know are one sided, He in fact calls them myths. These myths reflect one half of the people involved in our history. He argues that the Europeans took the new world in the name of their countries from the indigenous peoples who had discovered it long before them.

The French and Spanish both expanded to the Americas during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Both had different desires in doing so, but had similar viewpoints on the Natives that have settled American lands. The French sought out to find tradeable goods and new riches in the Americas while the Spanish expanded due to religion, competition and slavery. In Document 5, an Algonquian village with the name “Secotan” is pictured showing readers what a Native village in the Americas may have looked like in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Cottages made with lumber and sticks were used as shelter and storage facilities for food and weapons.
In the late 1600’s, many European settlers arrived in North America in hopes of escaping the hardships they faced back home. America initially promised colonists the wealth, religious freedom, and escape from oppression they desired. New England was home to dense forests, and hills which was not optimal for crop growth. Therefore, the colonists directed their attention towards trade and commerce. The people in this region were devoutly religious and believed in the education of children.

Historians who practice historiography agree that the writings from the beginning of what is now known as the United States of America can be translated various ways. In James H. Merrell’s “The Indians’ New World,” the initial encounters and relationships between various Native American tribes and Europeans and their African American slaves are explained; based on Merrell’s argument that after the arrival of Europeans to North America in 1492, not only would the Europeans’ lives drastically change, but a new world would be created for the Native Americans’ as their communities and lifestyles slowly intertwined for better or worse. Examples of these changes include: “deadly bacteria, material riches, and [invading] alien people.” (Merrell 53)
In his book, 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus, Charles Mann introduces a controversial topic regarding the Americas prior its colonization. Contrary to what is taught in American history, Mann reconstructs our understanding of life in the Americas before Columbus as he exposes that there were large civilizations living at the time. The indigenous were not wild and untamed; rather they were highly civilized and complex. The author successfully shows that by the time that the Europeans arrived to the Americas they did not witness it in its primal form, as it had already been altered by the indigenous people that were living there. Among the highly civilized cultures that existed at the time were the Mayans and the Aztecs.
The book is an apt textbook as it details the important concepts of colonial history in America. Hawke (1989) also takes a balanced approach in order to give the diverse viewpoints of notable scholars while discussing the history of early America. Moreover the topics clearly examine and explain every single section and notion including scholarly opinions. Overall the book has been excellently written and has highly researched text which provides knowledge to the readers about the early history of
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Americas is dramatically captured through the many writers who attempted to communicate what they saw, experienced and felt. What is more, the very purposes of their treacherous travel and colonization are clearly seen in their writings; whether it is poetry, history or sermons. Of the many literary pieces available today, William Bradford and John Winthrop’s writings, even though vary because the first is a historical account and the second is a sermon, stand out as presenting a clear trust in God, the rules that would govern them and the reason they have arrived in the Americas. First of all, William Bradford provides an in-depth look into the first moment when the Puritans arrived in the Americas. In fact, he chronicles the hardships they face on their way to Plymouth, yet he includes God’s provision every step of the way.
The end of the fifteenth century is attributed as the time period in which Christopher Colombus “discovered” the Americas. Although he was allegedly the first European to have reached these unknown lands at the time, many sought to reach the new world, for a variety of reasons. Most of those people could be divided in two: the settlers and the conquerors. In North America, there were more of the former, people looking for a new home where they could rebuild their families and lives. In Meso-America, however, the goal was to exploit the lands in order to produce and extract new goods which they could trade.
